another thing to consider is the strap and how well it's sewn on. Some straps may only last a few weeks.

I like the Swiss Army backpacks. I got one a couple years ago for ~$100 I think at Staples. Carries a lot, but I'm not hauling school books and binders around.

ETA: If I wanted something to last 4 years, I'd expect to pay more.

Another vote for Swiss Gear laptop bags.

I bought one in 2008 and i'm still using it now. However, in the last six months one of the zippers has failed and i've got a seam that is ripping. Still, that is nothing to complain about since i've used it five days per week for 9 years!

FWIW, every other laptop bag I used had problems after six months to a year. Mostly seams ripping out, failed zippers or backpack straps ripping out.

I'm a business traveler and love mine from eBags, but it's on the expensive side. Several people I work with have gotten this one from Amazon and they love it, especially for price point. It's been a snowball effect in the office - 3 people have gotten it since they saw the first person with it!

My daughters both use North Face backpacks with the laptop sleeve for college. They've held up very well.
