We are planning our first trip to WDW.
Should I buy lanyards before we go?
Are the Disney ones wider? I can get non disney lanyards at my local dollar store if it doersn't matter what the design is. Or is it better to have official ones???

The Disney ones are wider and sturdier than lanyards from the Dollar Store. Plain lanyards at Disney are $5 each, so i would just buy them when you get there.

Any lanyard is just fine. There are no rules. I would just make sure that you don't purchase a shoestring type lanyard because the pins don't stay very well on that type in my opinion. Disney sells lanyards and starter sets (lanyards with a few trader pins) at almost every pin selling location.

Also as far as starter lanyards go, I always like to get the starter lanyard pins when trading because you can't purchase them seperately from the starter set. And they do change them, The tink starters I bought(3 years ago) are not the same (though close) as the ones out now.
So, really it's all a matter of preference. For kids the starter lanyards are cool b/c they have 2 different pins w/ duplicates so they aren't heartbroken to trade the duplicates away and the set is cheaper than buying a lanyard and 4 pins.

Is there a place I can order on0line a kids starter lanyard set? Since we're going to go in Jan (the kids first trip!!) I wanted to do a "disney Christmas" and this would be great!!!

Yes. The first lanyard DS bought is much shorter than the ones we have gotten since then! We didn't realize there were 2 lengths.

By the way..... one thing nobody has mentioned yet is be ready because it is very fun to trade and addicting !!! BIG TIME !! But great fun.

Some do. Others come with just a small paper card. The ones with plastic pouches usually cost more. You can also buy the pouches separately.

Where can our children trade pins? Do they trade with the CM's in the ride lines at the park?

They can trade at rides, in stores, in restaurants, just walking around the parks and at Downtown Disney, and even in at the Disney Stores located in the Orlando Airport. You can trade with any cast member that has a lanyard or belt lanyard. CM's don't always have them around their necks. Also, there are different colored lanyards that the CM's wear, yellow and green. The CM's with green lanyards will only trade with kids.

Also, be sure to look for lanyard exclusive pins that you can only get by trading with cast members. They have hidden Mickeys on them.

You will be able to find the plastic pouches at pretty much any store at WDW. Usually right where you can buy pins.

To get some in, I would go with e-bay. You should be able to get some good starter sets or Lanyard starters fairly easily. Maybe even pick up a lot or two to get your kids started. That's what I did prior to my trip in May.
