I'm looking to be away for Christmas. I have never been to Lake Placid but thought it might be a nice place to spend the holidays. I have no idea where to stay, what to do, restaurants?

Anyone have any info or opinions on Lake Placid?

Also I am open to other suggestions for location, I just want to be able to drive to wherever we end up. I'm on Long Island.

Thanks! :)

We stayed at the Whiteface Lodge. It was beautiful.

:scared1: I just tried to price a week for us and it was running $12000! They only had a 3 bedroom available for when I was checking(holiday week)

But boy it is pretty. Darn kids.

We are in NJ and probably heading down to SC for the holidays. We rent a place in Kiawah(off season) but 2 years ago it was mild and we were able to walk on the beach- get into all the restaurants we love in Charleston but can never get into during the summer. It's more of a relaxing vacation.

you can also try www.adkbyowner.com (if you're looking for larger accomodations).

There's a lot to do in Lake Placid ... and the surrounding area ... if you're into outdoorsy activities.

If your family likes to ski, Whiteface will be open but unless we get a lot of snow early on, it won't be running at 100%. There's cross country skiing, and snowshoeing (rentals are available in and outside of town).

The bobsled rides will probably be open at Mt. Hoevenburg during the holidays (see here: http://www.orda.org/newsite/index.php).

The Wild Center (http://wildcenter.org/) is a pretty good place to visit, and not that far away from LP.

There are also a few outlets on Main Street.

Plenty of places to eat, all levels of price too (if you like handcrafted beers, try here: http://www.ubuale.com/).

PM me if you'd like more info

It is beautiful but wow Christmas week is outrageous! After seeing it though I really want to stay there, so pretty.

I've always wanted to go to Charleston. It seems like such a charming town. How long does it take you to drive there?

Thank you so much for all the links and info! :) The area look so beautiful, especially covered in snow.

We have only been to Lake Placid in the summer , we stayed at the Golden Arrow
http://www.golden-arrow.com/

It was reasonable, clean and nice. lakeside ( i dont think the lake is technically lake placid?) but anyway it was nice for swimming and boating in summer.
but I think this hotel has skating right there in winter.
it was walking distance to everything in the town, the olympic center, the main street, lots of nice shops and restaurants.
it was summer so we also went to some outdoor bbq restaurant that was incredibly good, and we went to a park, I forget the name, it was christmas themed ........also saw the ski jump complex,

some friends of ours just went up and stayed at the mirror lake inn they said it was nice.

The Golden Arrow and the Mirror Lake Inn are on Mirror Lake ...

and the outdoor bbq was probably Tail of the Pup.

Christmas themed park would be Santa's Workshop.

Mirror Lake Inn is pretty expensive, but it's a nice location.

I have never been to the lake, but the movie was pretty good.

Thank you, I thought it was Mirror Lake! It was 4 summers ago......so its been awhile.
yes, santas workshop, i have a pic of the post office at North Pole NY! LOL

Tail of the Pup is probably it, it had a big lobster statue in front,a little play area for kids, and it was picnic tables for eating.........and it was on the road leading to lake saranac.
it was delicious!!!

Love "Tale of the Pup"--- so kitschy! We love to sit at the picnic tables and watch the kids play on the playground while we have dinner (and my dd's ignore their dinners in favor of the ski lift swing).

Also love The North Pole---but will warn others that it is very old-school and worn out. I love it because my parent used to take me there when I was a kid and now we take our kids. It looks exactly the same as it did when I was a kid.....I think most people who go do so for the nostalgia trip!
