I am currently taking Yaz (low dose estrogen pill) and I HATE it-the side effects are just terrible :(

I've been doing some research and am going to call my doctor on Monday and talk to her about switching to a Progestin-only birth control pill. I've read that it does not have the side effects that the estrogen pills have.

What are your experiences with progestin-only BCP's & what brands have you tried?

Thank you!

I was on the mini-pill for a year after having my first baby, they are often used for mothers who are breast-feeding since estrogen reduces milk flow. I can't remember what brand it was.

It was okay. For me I had very irregular periods on it, lots of break through bleeding and long periods. I didn't like that. I was warned that you must take it the same time every day or it doesn't work, but that wasn't a problem for me. Regular birth control pills always made me nauseated whenever I'd start a new pack, the mini-pill did not upset my stomach.

After my second baby I went with an IUD (Mirena) instead and love that. By far the best method I've used.

Can you tell me more about the IUD? Is it dangerous?

I've heard Yaz can really mess with your hormones/moods/etc....From what I understand. It has a completely different type of hormone. I myself prefer older BC pills, not the newest brands. Tell your Dr. you want to switch to a different pill. Ask him or her for a low dose pill that's been on the market for many many years. The one I take has been around for decades.

I have had an IUD (Mirena) since the beginning of March. It emits a small doseage of hormones that prevents pregnancy by thinning the lining of the uterus. One bonus is that it lightens your period (mine are just starting to lighten up) and you may even stop getting it altogether. It's good for up to five years.

There are some risks involved - it can perforate the uterus and migrate. :scared1: Plus I have to say - the cramping was AWFUL for me, but I don't have kids and they say it is much worse then. It's been almost 3 months and now I mostly get them only when I have my period.

You should also look into the Depo Provera birth control shot. It's a progestin-only shot that you get once every three months. I have had a great experience with it, but it's a nightmare for some people.

I got pregnant TWICE taking the progestin-only pill (Micronor it was called at the time). My old GYN told me that it was fine for birth control. I took it religiously. It worked for almost 3 years then I, oops, got pregnant. Thought it was a fluke and took it for another 2.5 years and got pregnant again.

At that point, I moved and changed GYNs and my new GYN was ASTOUNDED that I was using tha for actual birth control. He said he only prescribes it to nursing mothers as some added protection because they have a little protection of their own yet cannot take estrogen.

That pill has to be taken everyday down to the EXACT minute to work at 96%. I think I must have been off by a an hour or two here and there which was all it took.

I now have two lovely children!:)

I am on desogen, but a note about Yaz - Yaz is NOT for people with normal periods/PMS - it is approved to treat PMDD, which is an actual medical/psychiatric disorder. My sister has it... that is why Yaz is making so many people sick/moody - its not meant for people whose hormones work!

I went to my Dr only yesterday and she prescribed me Yaz after not being on the pill for over 3 years, what she did try and give me was the Noova-ring (something like that) which releases progestin for 3 weeks then have a week off it, i'm assuming you have all the same types of birth control as we do over here on the other side of the world, i'll see if I can find some more info on it.

I just found this, some of the side effects sound a bit scary though

They say the doses released are lower because it's heading straight to where it needs to go, hmmmm I don't know

A friend of mine uses Nuva-Ring and loves it.

I was on the mini pill for a short time while I was nursing DD. It not only made me want to grab and kill every person I saw, but it tanked my milk supply. No way in the world I would take it again.

The BCP I've used is Yasmin and I really liked it, though I had to wait until I weaned DD at 17mo. MUCH lighter, less crampy periods.

As for IUDs... well a friend of my mother's delivered her IUD with her QUADRUPLETS!!! Yikes!
