Ladies - pantyhose and sandals/open toe shoes

Hosiery and pumps look a LOT more professional than bare legs and sandals, so I'm guessing that's why a few companies choose to enforce the wearing of hose. I'm betting they also require men to wear ties or at least a collared shirt to work. Not unheard of in the corporate world. :confused3

I'm a little older too. Always pantyhose, and I rebel with not wearing a slip with every dress.

Well, all of you pantyhose haters beware - THE LOOK for the fall is hose/tights with open-toed shoes. That is what all of the designers are showing for this fall and when you see the photos (like the one of Uma Thurman), it actually does look really cute - so never say "never" or judge others too harshly. And, as others have mentioned, one of the advantage of stockings is that they do actually hide a whole lot of visible faults.

Why does anyone care what someone else chooses to wear?? I just don't get it :confused3

A little OT: What kind of company makes it a rule for women to wear pantyhose anyway? And what are their rules for men? :confused3

I just find that a little nervy... but maybe I'm not realizing some profession that should make that mandatory. I couldnt care less what my flight attendant, nurse, teacher, cashier or other had on her legs.

My mother's a hospital based educator. She needs hosiery year round. It's an infection control issue. So that's one profession where it's for a reason.

And in the rare occassion I have to be dressed for a work event, I'm in the tights or the dark hose. With the amount of bruises my legs accumulate--no one should be subject to that sight with a skirt and sandals.

Agreed. I have never worked anywhere that had a dress code in which a man is told what kind of undergarments he needs to wear. To me a bare leg is no different than a bare arm.
The bank that had me discuss belly buttons and toes also enforced a dress code for men. While it didn't get into tighty whities vs. boxers, it did relegate sock colors and ties for men.

DO people still wear pantyhose?

none that I know! Even my 80 year old mother has given in and stoped wearing them.

I was thinking the same thing- when they require the men to wear panty hose then I will too- otherwise I am wearing pants just like them!

I love pantyhose! I feel much more comfortable in skirts and dresses and feel like it does make me more attractive, particularly in the stomach area. I feel more polished as well. Plus, the feeling of hose on freshly shaved legs is a marvelous sensation! It feels really nice. (ON unshaven legs, they feel wretched.) They also help with thigh chafing.

And yes, I will wear them with open toed shoes if I have them. Frankly, I don't care what people think about my legs. I see a lot of outfits that I think look just plain trashy, but if that's what floats your boat- go for it! If people judge me because I have hose on with my open toed shoes, that is their problem, not mine.

If the men wore skirts, they'd be wearig pantyhose too. Nobody said the women can't wear pants.

I am not so sure about that. If hose are for looks men woudlnt care about such silliness. Scotts wear kilts w/o hose... and I think without anything else too! :upsidedow Gee imagine that freedom! lol!

It's also a generation thing. I bet the woman in the elevator was an older woman.

That & I would say regional -- as well....as much as I fight it, I know I'm getting older (but still only in my early 40's) -- however, we were *taught* you always wear hose with dress shoes & especially if in a business setting. I actually know some companies still require hose to be worn. We were having this discussion on the hose/no hose in a shoe department of an upscale store & the salesperson helping us told DD that you might just be required to wear hose at a job -- they were. She doesn't like the idea of panythose at all so couldn't stand the idea that she was going to have to wear them for an upcoming interview event (we were buying closed toed shoes though which DD can't stand either).

My DD & I argue about this all the time because I can't stand to be dressed up & not have hose on. I feel underdressed. She can't stand that I will wear hose with dressy sandals/open toed shoes. However, I'm overly self-conscious if I don't do that plus I don't like the way the shoes feel on my bare feet.

It's a good thing I live in mostly jeans & gym shoes.

Panty hose are a horrible and evil and sadistic form of torture. :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

I have told my family that when I die, if I am buried in panty hose, I will come back and haunt them. :wave:

Hey! I still wear panty hose (23 yrs old) but only rarely on special occasions when I don't wear open toe or if it is too cold on Sundays with my church dress.

I am anti-pantyhose. DOWN with all forms of leg-squishing, man-made-fabric, sweat producing leg-sausage-casings!! LIBERATION!!

Ok I am done now.

By the way, I boycott slips too. And heels. Won't wear 'em.

I only wear flowy, swingy, broomstick style skirts anyhow. And sometimes a long A-line maxi dress. And both of those things look perfectly fine with casual sandals or flats. I do not work professionally, and spend most of my time with kids (mine and other people's), so no need to worry about antiquated dress codes. :snooty:

I had to go to a funeral of an elderly uncle a few weeks ago, and it was quite a struggle to find appropriate funeral attire in my closet. I had to go purchase nylons (and felt like a traitor to my own principles) but got a cheap pair of knee-highs (long black skirt) and tossed them in the trash IMMEDIATELY afterward. :lmao:

Down with all forms of restrictive, antiquated clothing!! :hippie:

I hardly wear dresses anymore, but if it is an evening affair, I usually would wear hose, but with closed shoes. During the day at work, I wouldn't wear them. I do look better with them, but not a lot of women wear them anymore, so I feel funny.

But yesterday I was in a meeting, and a friend of mine sat down next to me. She was wearing capri pants and sandals. Sort of a dressed up flip flop, with the part in between your toes. Well, I dropped something and bent down to pick it up, and I noticed that she was wearing hose and the sandal squished the hose in between her toes. :scared1: I thought it was really strange looking, and probably very uncomfortable.

OMG, that is too weird.

You guys crack me up! Pantyhose are nothing. Most of you are too young to remember the days prior to pantyhose. Pantyhose did not come along until the late 60s.

When I was in junior high and high school, girls had to wear a dress every day regardless of the weather. No pants ever! We could wear hose or anklets with our dresses. Needless to say, I picked hose, but there were no pantyhose. I had to wear either a garter belt or girdle. Each leg of the hose attached to the belt/girdle in three places with little clip things. Talk about torture. Before long, part of the top of the hose would roll or slide down your leg causing part of your leg to protrude out the top. The hose would bind so bad that it felt like it was cutting off your circulation. Miserable.

I was thrilled when pantyhose were invented. At first, they were very hard to get. They were invented out of necessity when mini-skirts became popular.

So, give me pantyhose any day over what I wore growing up!

I meant at work in a professional position. Not just in general. People were saying that they didn't think employers should be able to make a woman wear panythose when they don't tell the guys what to wear. My point was that if the guys wore skirts to work, they'd have to wear pantyhose, too.
