Hi,

We are going to Ft. Lauderdale over Memorial Day weekend to met with DH's new coworkers and have a "social weekend". The scariest part of the move for me is meeting all these new people. This new job is bigger than anything Dh has had before and could be amazing for our future. The circle of people we will be around are a bit intimidating to me. So I am going to get the cut/style and highlights I have been wanting to do for a while before we got.

How much should I expect for full foil highlights and a new style/cut? I have had this done before but a long time ago. I know that I would need the highlights only, no lowlights b/c my hair is it's darkest natural color all the way around and only need the blonde. I just want a simple should length cut with more long layers and bounce. Think old Jennifer Aniston cut...

What do you pay in your area for this type of work?

Thanks! :)

In my area, it would run you about $100. I have no idea if that's high, low, or about right.

In my area that runs about $115 not including tip.

It depends on your area and the scale of the salon. The lady who has been cutting my hair for the past 20 years (when she first got out of cosmetology school) has become very well known- taking clients only by invite. So now, if I want her to continue to cut my hair, I have to go to a very upscale salon in the trendiest part of town.

So, at this place, when I had my hair cut/highlighted/styled a few months ago, it was $225.00 + tip. $75 for the cut/style, $150 for 3 color highlights. But she is well worth it. Her reputation is well deserved.

I think the norm for a good salon here is about $160 and then cheaper again at the chains like great clips.

$140 at a good salon in the far suburbs of DC.
Should take about an hour and a half

Hope your trip goes well - good luck!!

Same here.

Although I used to pay $160 without the tip at an Aveda salon.

yep - the place i used to go to downtown (a swanky salon) would be more as well.

i am lucky now that i have found a person i like at the bubbles near my apartment.

and i just realized that i am going to have to find a new hair place when we move unless i want to drive 30 mins to get my hair cut.

:teeth: Me too!!! I have been going to the Bubbles at Potomac Mills and the girl there is doing a fine job. It's not quite as good as the $160 cut/highlight but it's close enough for me. It's easy and costs me about $110-120 plus tip.

One of my old hairstylists told me that if you get in a pinch, always go to Bubbles because they try to hire students out of the better styling school (like Graham Webb).

Youre in Barrington .... you're gonna pay a nice chunk of cash.

How thick is your hair? How many highlight colors do you want? I think, at a "nicer" salon, youre looking at $200-ish...

Can I give you some fabulous advice? Find yourself a great Beauty School (there's a Pivot Point in Schaumburg) and get it done there. It's less then 1/3 the normal price - youve got a whole set of people working on you - AND the teachers have to go through more schooling then a regular stylist and are guiding and watching the whole time.

Im telling you - do the beauty school.

Try Mall Salons, sometimes they are not so expensive. JCPenny's usually has salons. Highlights run around $60 and haircuts run around $20.

I get foil highlights (2 colors), cut, and style for $110 plus tip here in Charlotte. I go to a small, non "fancy name" salon where I know everyone. Think Truvy's in Steel Magnolias.

My advice about this is do not and i repeat DO NOT go to a place such as Hair Cuttery...
I went there once to try and save money because the place i was going to for years was getting quite expensive...Well, i learned a valuable lesson - you get what you pay for...
They messed up the highlights so bad it was ridiculous...I went back (very embarrassed) to the girl that usually does my hair and paid another 100 dollars to have it fixed...
I will stick with the expensive place from now on...Big - huge lesson learned..

OMG at your hair prices! For a foil highlights, cut, style I pay about $60 with tip. It's about $80 with tip for a full color, highlights, cut and style. When we move my SIL is doing my hair and that will only be for the cost of supplies so maybe $20 or so. YIKES for everyone else!

Wow. I have gone for just highlight between cuts and the highlight alone were $75. And I don't go to a fancy-smancy place either.

Thanks for the reponses. I don't live in Barrington anymore, I need to change that but might as well wait!! We are in Naperville/Aurora now. I thought about that beauty school, but I want it NOW! :)

I made an appointment at Mario Tricoci for tonight about 500ft from my work. I talked with some of the girls here at work and that is were they all go. Looks to be about $135 or so. I am going to get it cut and then highlighted b/c I want to cut quite a bit off and it doesn't make sense to highlight the whole thing then cut it off! :) I don't care about the style b/c I am just going to go home and go to bed and I can't recreate it anyway... just want typical long layers with some bounce! :) Nothing crazy! :)

Wish me luck... I haven't been to a salon in so long! Once I went to Great Clips or something like that for highlights. They used the cap. My highlights started about 1/4 of an inche away from my scalp! Awful, won't do that again! :)

For years I was paying $200 and up for highlights and a trim but then it kept going up and I thought the stylist was doing a decent job but then this past year my hair just wasn't styling well at home!

I felt "disloyal" but I finally stopped driving 45 minutes (my stylist had been moving farther and farther away plus getting more and more expensive) and started going to the same person my husband and son go to and WOW! She highlighted and trimmed my hair for $80 tip included and it has never looked this good! What a difference! And she's 10 minutes away!

Now I don't feel guilty about paying to get rid of the gray and looking good!
