Lactose Intolerant Toddler?? Inexpensive milk alternatives?

We use almond or rice or other "alternative" milks. My DD has a milk allergy (she gets rashes), plus I am of the mind that people don't really need to be drinking milk from another animal! There was an experiment done where they took pasturized, off-the-shelf milk and fed it to baby cows, and they did not survive. So needless to say, milk can't be that good for you.

Soy is also controversial... for the PP who asked, if you do an internet search on it you will come up with lots of info. One problem is that it is a very estrogenic plant, and if you drink/eat too much soy it can mess with your hormones. Also, half of all people who are allergic to milk are also allergic to soy.

My co-worker gave me a recipe to make your own oat milk:
Take 1 cup rolled oats, put them in a blender with about 1 1/4 quart of water (she eyeballs it so it is a few inches from top of the blender container). Blend- pulse it, then let it sit, then pulse again, until blended. Then strain with cheesecloth. Shake well before using.

I have not tried the recipe yet, but she swears by it, and says its easy and fast! My sister also makes her own almond milk, but I do not have the recipe for that, I imagine it would be similar to the oat recipe.
