Hi I need some help. My 6 mos old son has been diagnosed as lactose intolerant. He might outgrow it but we can't try him on any cows milk until after he turns 1. We have a trip scheduled in Dec and I have already notated our dining ressies but do I need to do anything else? Is soy milk readily available? Thanks in advance. This is all very overwhelming so any tips you have please pass them on.

My DD3 also is lactose intolerant, unfortunately I never saw soy or lactose free anything. She just got a juice box of apple juice everywhere we went. I was in a fridge swap, so we went to wal-mart twice to get lactaid milk, everytime we left the room, I filled her sippy cup with milk, so she atleast got some twice to three times a day.
My doctor said we could give her half a lactaid once she turned 2. We actually started at 18 months and never had a problem, other than loose stools. The lactaid stopped all the cramping she had, and kept her bottom from being so sore. If you haven't heard of Happy Hiney, get a prescription from your peditrician. It is desitin mixed with a topical pain killer, which soothes a sore bottom, and heals nasty rashes within hours. My DD3 still will occasionally ask for it!

This is tough to deal with, but you'll be alright.
I think in the end, this was great for us. She never had all those foods, that kids only want to eat, like mac n cheese, most all canned foods, etc. She eats fruits and veggies mostly! It is tough telling her she can't have cake, ice cream, all the fun stuff when other kids are eating it in front of her. She just now started saying "that will hurt my tummy?" She understands. I let her have a lactaid about twice a week and have a treat.

You could keep him on soy formula if he'll still drink it when you go. Just pack some powder and you can always get water. Also they have soy milk drink boxes that don't need to be refridgerated in the market health section in the grocery store. After a while you'll learn the brands that don't use milk, whey, butter. Pillsberry icing in the jar is made from soy!

Hmm he is on the lactose free formula not the soy. The only symptom he had was spitting up all the other formulas. That has stopped since going onto the lacto free. My ped said we can try cheeses, and yogurt. If they bother him then use the soy ones. I use soy milk when I cook things like mashed potatoes so that he can eat them. We are just now starting table foods. When I notated the dining ressies the CS rep called our resort and verified that soy milk was sold in the "convienance store" (can't remember what Disney calls them) in our resort. We are staying one night at ASMu and then moving over to WL. I was either going to ship some stuff ahead or use Garden Grocer or someone equivelant, but would need some soy milk that first night. I was also told that when we get to the buffet's if there isn't anything on there that he can eat, we can speak with the chef and they will make something for him. Did you try this? Have any problems with it?

Glad your DD is doing well with understanding it and that taking the lactaid helps. I can't even try the lactaid milk right now. He's too young. Thanks for the info!

All my babies as well as myself are lactose intolerance. I could not even use reg formulas. I had to use the soy, even lastose free formulas were not 100% and they would blow out diapers.

I used soy, prosobee formulas and others until a year old. THen tried lactose milk, 100% free, not the 70% free. There is soy milk too.

Watch for hidden lactose too as he gets to table foods. Hotdogs, some pill coatings as generics are sugar fillers, (not that baby would take them). Puddings, yogurt, cheese (mac and cheese),

I carried the powder Soy formula, it should not hurt your trip, just limit or omit the mac and cheese....
Man I remember the blow outs running down the legs, and hosing them off. Belly aches too!
:confused3 Gee, I must be talking about me :rotfl2:
good luck
Dianne

Thanks for the info. Gee we don't have any of that. Just spits up the formula. Ped said to try him on cheeses and yogurt but no pudding, custards or milk. I can cook with the soy milk and should be starting him on straight soy milk at 10 mos. (When she normally starts whole milk) Thanks for the info I'm learning alot!

i have 2 boys (2 & 7 yo) that are lactose intolerant and we use lactaid milk with them. while at disney what we usually do is order from garden grocer so we can have it for the entire trip. for medical reasons hotels will sometimes give you a fridge for free if not already in the room. my guys can tolerate small amounts of lactose (cheese, yogurt, mac & cheese) but when they start eating a lot (and things start to get loose!!!!!) we also use something called digestive advantage for both of them (it is like lactaid tablets but for kids). (your little one is too young for this, but thought i would mention it for the future!).

you would most likely be able to find lactose free items at sit down restaurants. last time we had rice dream ice cream (which i thought tasted horrific, but they ate it up!!). and the chefs are great about walking you through the buffet and telling you what is-is not safe for your particular allergy/intolerance or coming to the table to help go through the menu. counter service is a little more tricky because it always seems crowded to me and a bit less organized. i try to find a manager to get a definite answer about what is safe.

my youngest has other food allergies, and i found out about a women named brenda bennett who deals specifically with special food needs with disney dining. i emailed her once with my questions and she sent me specific info about what was safe for my son. if you search this site you will find her email address and she is very helpful with what you need.

sorry this is long, but i just wanted to share my experiences so far. best wishes with your little guy!

I have a friend whose son is lactose intolerant and has numerous other food allergies. I suggested a trip to Disney a few years back post 9-11. This family really needed this vacation after losing their husband/father in the towers. They went and stayed at the Wilderness Lodge. She came back and raved about the chefs and the concern that they gave to her and her son's needs. She had taken along food etc in case there were problems but she said she never needed any of it. She said the chefs would come out and talk to her at the restaurants and asked each day if there was something special they could prepare for him and that she only had to call and ask if she needed something. She said she couldn't remember there ever being a time when she wasn't concerned about his food problems but she wasn't worried there. So I thought I would let you know that you only have to ask and they will help. So try not to worry too much and enjoy your trip.

Since your child is over 3 in stead of the Lactose pill for kids you can try
the Digestive advantage for Lactose intolerance for children it works Great!
my DS9 has been on it a year...works wonders for it..... it is cherry flavor and chewable so kids do like it - for 3 days you take 2 pills a day and follow your reg. eating schedule and take a lactose pill when you eat if needed...then on day 3 you take 1 pill and eat what you want...still limits but they are much better than when you just have the other pill...

Brenda Bennett's email is in the disABILITIES FAQs thread.

My son is allergic to milk. I'm not sure on the soy milk though because he usually doesn't drink it. You can call disney dining and get the phone numbers of the restaurants and inquire ahead of time. they may be able to have it on hand for you...I have read this somewhere.
They did have desserts for my son and he was so thrilled! they had tofutti, rice dream and sorbet for dessert ice cream choices! they also have dairy free cookies and brownies at some locations!
Oh, we never called ahead about his allergies and we had NO problems at all. He is also allergic to peanuts and fish. The Disney chef's were FANTASTIC!
