For the last few years, eveny time I usually consumed dairy, (especially milk and ice cream) I would just have the same issues which included stomach issues, and not always keeping it down.
But now Im wondering if its possible for it to get worse over time? Today I had a milkshake, and ended up feeling miserable. Dizzy, lightheaded, and now my throat suddenly got swollen, red and itchy. So I'm wondering does lactose intolerance just get worse?

My husbands has become much worse over the years, and he can't drink milk at all anymore or he is doubled over in intense pain.

I feel bad for him, because one of his joys in life is a tall glass of milk and a bag of Oreos.

My favorite food is ice cream, and it always makes me sick, but I usually deal with it. Now, if this is how i will feel, I won't be able to have it at all. Do those pills work for him at all?

Not really, but they must work for some people so it's worth giving it a try.

It can get worse, my boyfriend is dealing with it now himself.

Lactaid does work for him but only with some things. He can NOT have straight milk or ice cream. He can eat hard white cheese with little to no issues without medication help. Anything in between (like mac and cheese for example) he can eat but needs to take 1-2 pills (depending on the meal).

Swollen, red and itchy throat is not a symptom of lactose intolerance. This sounds more like an allergy. If that is the case, lactaid is worthless to you. I would suggest seeing an allergist and having a test run just to be sure. Allergies can develop at anytime. If it turns out to be a dairy allergy, an allergist will likely advise you to avoid all dairy products entirely. My daughter has a dairy allergy and the symptoms you described sound like hers.

Basically, once you stop eating lactose, your body stops making lactase (the enzyme to break it down). So it takes a lot more work to deal with the milk.

On the other hand, was it true ice cream? Or was it, say, from McDonalds with additives and weird ingredients? That could have caused the reaction as well, or at least part of the reaction (which sounds pretty all encompassing!).

have you tried the lactose free ice creams? Dh is lactose intolerant and he can eat the lactose free ice cream.

That's not why DH's got worse. He didn't know he was lactose intolerant (and wouldn't believe me that he was) so he was still having milk products regularly. It still got worse.

My husbands also seemed to have worsend. The pills don't help him one bit.

Yes. I no longer can eat pizza, slices of cheese and ice cream will leave me uncomfortable for days. I figured most of my problems were age related as there are several foods I have to eat in moderation now, onions, green peppers and the dreaded broccoli. One of my favorites but not a good thing anymore. And eggs...

I agree with the other poster though, with the itchy throat it sounds more like an allergy. It wouldn't hurt to have it checked out as it could be dangerous if it is an allergy and you don't know what it is.

Good luck...I miss the days when I could have a big bowl of ice cream or a big shake!

There is a milk that is lactose free, I buy the walmart brand, but there is also one made by Lactaid. I also take the pills. I don't have much of a problem if I take the pills, I also get the walmart brand.
