Lack of Desire to Travel

Surely I'm not the only one...

As I listen to the podcasts and hear the gang about upcoming trips out of the country, it made me realize I have absolutely no desire to travel outside the U.S. I've visited other countries while in the military, but even then, I had no desire to visit; I had no choice in the issue.

Some may say this shows a lack of education or intelligence on my part. I consider myself very educated (I have a graduate degree) and, at least according to the IQ tests from elementary school, very intelligent. I love history , especially medieval history, which is why even I find my lack of interest in travel to be strange.

Please note I'm not looking for people to convince me to travel outside the country, I'm just looking for reassurance that I'm not alone.

I also don't like cruises, but that's an entirely different issue...

Its a perfectly understandable position. There is so much to see and do right here in the US that some people are quite content not to venture to other countries. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Now that cruise thing is a whole different story. ;)

I've only been to France and Switzerland, so I would definitely like to see more of the world. It is a huge hassle, though, and very expensive. So those are very demotivating.

and i'm starting to get the same way in reverse...maybe it's an age thing?

it may be in "age thing."However, it seems to be opposite for me than it is from you. I wanted to explore much more when I was younger.

I am going to Scotland in Oct. I am going to see some friends, other wise it would not happen. I am sure I will have a great time, but would rather spend the time and money for a week at the beach and WDW. Now the cruise thing, I have to disagree. I loved cruising.

I am with you on both the cruise and travel outside the country. Absolutely no desire to do either.

There is so much right here in this country that I have not seen yet though so I do have a domestic bucket list!

To each his own ... but there is a whole big world out there with new experiences and beauty to see.

I suppose there is something to be said as far as seeing something with your own eyes, but I'm not a sentimental person, and I can see something in a photograph and be just as happy. (Even WDW, I don't get a "special feeling" from actually being there).

I'm not trying to say that one way is "superior." One is just not for me.

I don't think there is anything wrong with feeling this way at all. Everyone has their likes and dislikes. My father, for example, refuses to travel anywhere but PA and FL. It's up to what you are most comfortable with and interested in doing. :)

Don't mean to Hijack but Happy 10,000th post Nikki!!

Sometimes I feel the same way... there is so much of the US I still have to see!

Many of us forget how big a country this is. The regional variations are very pronounced. I was born and raised in Plymouth MA and appreciate the variations of the seasons. I married a woman from Lafayette LA and appreciate the cajun culture. I just returned from at trip to Californian and I appreciate.... :scratchin

I am lucky that I got to travel the world as an Army brat. We had this exact conversation sitting in Nova Scotia yesterday. There are so many beautiful areas of North America that I haven't seen. I have seen a lot of the US but still more I would love to see. I don't feel the need to travel overseas at this time.

So much to see, so little time. :) :)

There is some great places in the United States. National Parks Like the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. Presidental Libraries. Okay that last one is probably just me. So it's not odd at all that you just want to travel in the US.

I thinks it's normal, and I can fully understand this viewpoint.

There is a LOT to see in the USA, (sometimes it can seem seemingly endless- in that you'll never see it ALL...) And there's a certain comfort in not leaving your "home turf". (No language barriers, no worries about currency conversions, none of that driving on the "wrong side" of the road business... )

But.

For us, it was definitely an "age thing". Nothing ventured, nothing gained, and all of that...

With all of the construction going on in the parks, (forever, it seems) Come Sept. will mark our third year without AP's, at one time a thought that would have seemed, well, "unthinkable".

But with the extra money that has provided for us, (and the *VERY slowly* improving economy) this is where the glory of "Adventures by Disney" has proven to be a Godsend for us...

The thought of spending a week in Germany or Costa Rica or Italy "supreme" (Over the Christmas holidays ! :goodvibes ) would have proven overwhelming for us - And frankly, just a little bit scary. But, the CM's and the "we think of everything" attitude found at ABD can spoil a person VERY quickly.

(I should point out, at this point, as Pete would say that we have NO "financial relationship" with ABD, - we're just huge fans.)

So, to wrap this up, I'm not trying to convince you to vacation in other countries, and PLEASE rest assured that you are far from alone in that opinion...

BUT, *should* you ever change your mind and feel like traveling outside of the USA, remember the sense of community, safety and convenience that can be found in an Adventure by Disney.

:thumbsup2

I have to admit that we are not that interested in traveling outside the US. Travel has become very challenging. I don't feel as safe as I did just a few years ago. I have experienced too much "anger" and hostility the last couple of times we traveled out of the US. Flight travel is HORRIBLE!!!
There are a lot of wonderful places to see in our own country. I think we'll be staying "stateside" for now.

I am at a point in my life where I have the freedom and wherewithal to travel and see things I have always dreamed of seeing.

I understand that everyone is different and at different points in life and luckily....you get to choose.

I can equate this to not usually knowing (or caring) which teams are playing in the Superbowl.

I also never want to sit through a Nascar race.

Visiting Italy, or France or Germany or Switzerland.....that I want to do.:thumbsup2

To each his own ... but there is a whole big world out there with new experiences and beauty to see.

That's how I feel, too. :thumbsup2 My mother loved to travel, and I am my mother's daughter! Thanks to my mom, who took me on my first cruise in 2004, I also love to cruise. :teeth: My parents took us on some great vacations when my siblings and I were growing up, and my DH and I have taken some great trips with our kids. So - whether it's a weekend trip 2 hours away to the Indy Irish Fest, or a trip halfway around the world to Australia and New Zealand (planned for 2014) - I'm happy to plan a trip just about anywhere. :)

I also never want to sit through a Nascar race.

Whaaa?

Getting up at 6AM in the morning to sit for nine hours on uncomfortable metal benches in the sizzling heat to watch cars with ear-bleedingly loud engines go round and round on an oval track while the smells of stale, cheap beer and gas fumes battle for dominance over your waves of ever-increasing nausea as the effects of sun stroke edge you slowly and mercifully closer into a state of unconsciousness ?

What's not to love ?

:tilt:
