Hubby, my mom and I just returned from a week in O-Town, where we were fortunate enough to have been able to try La Cava del Tequila, the new tequila bar inside the Mexican pavilion at Epcot.

Let me just say: Where, oh where have you been????

The location is where the jewelry shop used to be (inside, down the walk and to the right as you enter). It has the feel of a cellar when you enter. The staff is extremely welcoming. We weren't sure what we were in for when we entered, but both servers and a hostess welcomed our group for just a look, a drink or something to eat.

We were very surprised at how small the eating/drinking area is. Don't get me wrong; I personally love a smaller, more intimate type of bar/restaurant, but it's just shocking after seeing such "hugeness" all over WDW, to walk into a place that looks to seat between 15 and 30 guests.

I hope there's room for expansion if it becomes too popular?

Anyway, on to the review. I'll make my apologies now for not taking more photos of the menu. It's a book, I'll tell you! But there's basically two pages of extremely high-end margaritas. Then there are three pages of different types of tequila shots you can purchase, at either full shot or half shot. Then there was a page or two of tapas-style good eats.

We described to one of our servers what sort of mood we were in as far as starting out with a margarita. Mom felt like something on the cusp of both sweet and sour, so she ordered the first margarita on the menu. It was on the rocks, with a thick salt, strong flavors of peach and lime in the drink itself and topped with a chipotle cream foam. Off the charts good!!!!

Hubby wanted just a good ol' fashioned margarita on the rocks. We were able to see the bartender preparing this in the distance, and we were very excited it turned out to be coming to our table. The presentation was out of this world. Hubby loved it.

I felt like something refreshing, so I ordered the margarita that had crushed cucumber in it with a lemongrass salted rim (again, apologies for not taking pix of the menu so I'd have the proper names. these are all on the "margarita pages" and should be easily identifiable based on descriptions). This was practically a meal with all the fresh cucumber in it!

All in all, the margaritas were positively delicious, and we wouldn't hesitate to order them again. Much, much nicer than the slushie stuff that's served outside.

Now we'll move on to our eats. We didn't want to fill up, so we ordered two tapas: Salsa with chips and a fresh guacamole platter.

The guacamole might have been the best I've ever had outside of my own home. It was very obviously just made to order, and they were served with these air puff chips that I could most closely compare to a homemade Funyun. There was a mildly spicy sauce drizzled on the Funyun-type puffs. I will look forward to enjoying this one again.

The chips and salsa were outstanding, as well. We saw where the chips were being made fresh. The salsa first appeared "liquidy," but once you dunked a chip in it, it was actually rather thick. The salsa also tasted very, very homemade and fresh.

We ended our first journey here with shots. Mom wasn't too keen on tequila shots so early in the day, but hubby and I were game. He ordered a whole shot; I ordered a half shot. We opted for the Corzo Silver, which was a suggestion from our server. She said it was extremely smooth for being a young tequila. It was served "completo" with lime, salt and sangrita. For anyone not familiar (we weren't familiar with this, either), you take a bit of salt in your mouth, sip the tequila, bite the lime a little, and follow it with a sip of sangrita. Rinse, lather and repeat :goodvibes

We give La Cava del Tequila two enthusiastic thumbs up. This is just what Epcot needed, IMHO.

So they make the chips here fresh but use bagged chips for the restaurant? How odd. Maybe they will start using fresh ones in the restaurant now...

Thanks for the review and the pics - the drinks look delicious! We'll definitely be hitting this one at least once on the next trip. It's been a long time coming!!

great pictures - wonder how they will handle the crowds!

I researched tequilla on tequilla.net - I wondered what the difference between silver tequilla and repisado - repisado tequillas are aged a little longer, and are a little smoother - I havent tried the aged tequillas (the 3rd category of tequillas!)

Cant wait to try it!

Thanks for posting this - we're looking forward to multiple visits next month. :thumbsup2

Awesome stuff, can't wait to go and try one of those Flights which is a selection of tequila shots.

How much $ was that old fashioned margarita? I love just reg margarit's on the rocks. I don't really care for the frozen ones. I had one last year and you don't want to know what it did to my digestive system. I will say that I became very familar with all the restrooms that Epcot has to offer. :headache:

Wow this looks great~! We have a ressie at SAI in a few short weeks, maybe we should stop here prior for an appy and cocktail! Thanks so much for the review :thumbsup2

Looks like I will be making quite a few stops here. The drinks look great. Thanks for the great pictures.

Thanks so much for posting this. I am looking forward to checking it out on my upcoming trip.

Thanks for posting! I've been curious about this since I heard that it opened. Looks like it's worth a stop!

My husband and I checked this place out this past Saturday evening and it was fabulous. The specialty margaritas are pricey ($10 - $13) but they were so interesting and delicious! All kinds of interesting salts and foams and flavors - I can't wait to try them all! The food was also terrific and WAY better than what they serve in the other two Mexican restaurants. The fresh guacomole was very well, fresh! And we had both the chicken and the mahi tostados and those were equally flavorful and yummy. The atmosphere was cozy and relaxing and everything that's usually so hard to find at WDW for 2 adults looking to chill ;) Needless to say, we LOVED it!

DH and I booked the Tequila Tasting here on 10-3-09, during the F&WF, and can't wait. Also, does anyone know........can you get a margarita "to go" here??

Yes, you can take the margaritas out if they are put in a plastic cup. The glass containers may not leave the bar area.

Were there tequila flights available? I would love to try a few types.

Yippee.... no more yucky slushy margaritas for me!

Just wanted to pop back by and say how glad I am that y'all seem to be excited about this place. DH & I were so impressed with it, we've gone out, found the tequila we had at the bar, as well as found a recipe for sangrita that's similar to what we had at the bar, and we've been enjoying the experience at home now, too.

Probably not a good idea to expose you nice folks to those photos!

Looks like most questions have been answered by other posters, but I did want to emphasize to the poster who asked about homemade nachos in the tequila bar, but not in the restaurant. Yes, you are very, very correct. From what we saw and tasted, this is completely different from the standardized, prepackaged/overly-processed stuff in the restaurant and quick serve place outside.

I would compare it in some aspects to the mom and pop authentic Mexican eatery you might find in your hometown, but the exotic foams and salts and ingredients in the dishes and drinks bring it to a different level ... maybe an upscale martini bar type of place.

A wonderful addition to Epcot :lovestruc

Also, the only frozen margarita is the one that has fresh avocado in it. All the others are served on the rocks.

SO excited about trying bar in November!:cool1:

LOVE authentic, well-made margaritas. Mom I already plan to enjoy a few happy hours here! ::yes::

We were there too this past weekend...twice. That was how great it was! We both had the classic margaritas, they were served in a beautiful glass, with a cactus lemongrass salted rim. Delicious! We also had some of the tapas they offered-
The Guacamole was amazing and so fresh. I will just say this, both of my girls are adopted from Guatemala, and this was *almost* as good as the guacamole we would get there, Soooooo good. And they served it with what they called "flour Chicharones" (sp?) and a red hot sauce on top. So original and delicious.
We also got the pulled chicken tostadas. Again, wonderful. Chicken on top of black refried beans, and some other things I cannot remember. We also had the crab tostadas. Amazing, I do not remember all the details, but they are a must have!
All in all, a must see, we even took our kids in there, and it was quick enough to please them, and slow enough to please us, if you know what I mean. :)
