Hubby, my mom and I just returned from a week in O-Town, where we were fortunate enough to have been able to try La Cava del Tequila, the new tequila bar inside the Mexican pavilion at Epcot.
Let me just say: Where, oh where have you been????
The location is where the jewelry shop used to be (inside, down the walk and to the right as you enter). It has the feel of a cellar when you enter. The staff is extremely welcoming. We weren't sure what we were in for when we entered, but both servers and a hostess welcomed our group for just a look, a drink or something to eat.
We were very surprised at how small the eating/drinking area is. Don't get me wrong; I personally love a smaller, more intimate type of bar/restaurant, but it's just shocking after seeing such "hugeness" all over WDW, to walk into a place that looks to seat between 15 and 30 guests.
I hope there's room for expansion if it becomes too popular?
Anyway, on to the review. I'll make my apologies now for not taking more photos of the menu. It's a book, I'll tell you! But there's basically two pages of extremely high-end margaritas. Then there are three pages of different types of tequila shots you can purchase, at either full shot or half shot. Then there was a page or two of tapas-style good eats.
We described to one of our servers what sort of mood we were in as far as starting out with a margarita. Mom felt like something on the cusp of both sweet and sour, so she ordered the first margarita on the menu. It was on the rocks, with a thick salt, strong flavors of peach and lime in the drink itself and topped with a chipotle cream foam. Off the charts good!!!!
Hubby wanted just a good ol' fashioned margarita on the rocks. We were able to see the bartender preparing this in the distance, and we were very excited it turned out to be coming to our table. The presentation was out of this world. Hubby loved it.
I felt like something refreshing, so I ordered the margarita that had crushed cucumber in it with a lemongrass salted rim (again, apologies for not taking pix of the menu so I'd have the proper names. these are all on the "margarita pages" and should be easily identifiable based on descriptions). This was practically a meal with all the fresh cucumber in it!
All in all, the margaritas were positively delicious, and we wouldn't hesitate to order them again. Much, much nicer than the slushie stuff that's served outside.
Now we'll move on to our eats. We didn't want to fill up, so we ordered two tapas: Salsa with chips and a fresh guacamole platter.
The guacamole might have been the best I've ever had outside of my own home. It was very obviously just made to order, and they were served with these air puff chips that I could most closely compare to a homemade Funyun. There was a mildly spicy sauce drizzled on the Funyun-type puffs. I will look forward to enjoying this one again.
The chips and salsa were outstanding, as well. We saw where the chips were being made fresh. The salsa first appeared "liquidy," but once you dunked a chip in it, it was actually rather thick. The salsa also tasted very, very homemade and fresh.
We ended our first journey here with shots. Mom wasn't too keen on tequila shots so early in the day, but hubby and I were game. He ordered a whole shot; I ordered a half shot. We opted for the Corzo Silver, which was a suggestion from our server. She said it was extremely smooth for being a young tequila. It was served "completo" with lime, salt and sangrita. For anyone not familiar (we weren't familiar with this, either), you take a bit of salt in your mouth, sip the tequila, bite the lime a little, and follow it with a sip of sangrita. Rinse, lather and repeat
We give La Cava del Tequila two enthusiastic thumbs up. This is just what Epcot needed, IMHO.
