I'm interested in supplementing my average math/reading 3rd grader with tuturing at Kumon. I say she's average because it takes a lot of work at home to get her to understand things, but then she gets good grades. I'm hoping that Kumon will help her have a better understanding of things so that she can do well on her own. I've read the website. Tell me how much are the average costs per month? How many classes per week does that cover and how long is the class? What does the initial testing entail and can you see the results of the test? Thanks!

I'd never heard of it before so I did a bit of googling. There are quite a few websites about Kumon so I didn't really know which one I'd post here for you.

Just try googling it and I'm sure you'll come up with a site where you can ask your questions.

ONE I saw DID mention something about $80-110 per month but I didn't peruse the site long enough to find out more for you.

Good luck! :)

Thanks DisMN. I looked at a few websites but I would like some first hand information from parents who have utilized the center. I'd specifically like to know how long the classes are and for what length of time did their child utilize the services.

My 3 kids were in Kumon for years. It was about $75/mo but I'm in Canada. It certainly made a difference in how well they did in math, but the earlier you enroll them the better. Our centre was open 2 x a week, but I only went once a week to pick up their work and drop it off. I found the centre to be hectic and depending on timing, quite busy - so not condusive to quiet learning. I guess that would depend on who and where it was run...

Hope this helps!

Thanks Bonnie40. I stopped by one of their offices yesterday while kids were there. I have to say that I was under the impression that it was a tutoring based program. From what I saw, it was more of a "redundant (sp?) learning" program, with repetition. Basically, doing the basics until it is etched in stone and comes very naturally to the kids. I saw these kids (ages 6-about 10) sitting at tables doing timed worksheets. Once done, they were checked for accuracy and then if 100% correct, they moved onto the next worksheet. I totally agree with this style of learning, but I also think that this could be done at home (with the right materials). Since my DD hasn't done one of these classes yet, my opinion is only based on what I have read and seen looking from the outside in. That's why I would like to hear from parents who have first hand experience. Anyone else?
