Beware: the Kraft shredded cheese in bags is now 7oz instead of 8oz. I have several recipes that call for a bag of cheese that will now be short. They also don't note the change on the bags. I am sure the other manufacturers will follow suit shortly. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

I know this is the budget board, but I am not going to grate my cheese. Way too messy.

Just at tip I don't know if this is going forward but in my store the 7 oz bags were only one "type" I can't remember if it was the chef fancy shred? or something like that. So 2 bags of cheddar- one was 8 oz the other was 7 for the exact same sale price. I don't know if they'll all change over to 7 but I don't like that!

Not surprising. Thanks for theheads up.

I haven't noticed this in my store yet, but this makes me so angry. I've been buying the bricks and shredding them myself, my store has been pricing them cheaper then the bags.

Was it reduced fat by any chance? Quite some time ago Kraft changed the reduced fat cheeses to 7oz, and the regular were left at 8oz. I have not noticed the difference yet in the regular cheeses around here.

In my area it is the regular bags of cheddar. Not the fancy blends. I also saw this at two different stores.

Get the big bags at Costco/Sam's. Cheaper and you get all the 8oz portions you need ;)

In a recipes, is there really a noticeable difference between 7 or 8 oz?

All of these "the product is shrinking" threads remind me of the original Hershey bar. The size of the bar would fluctuate in relation to the price of sugar, but the price stayed the same. So I guess you need to figure out if you would rather have 1 oz less of cheese, or have the price rise by 1/8. (If your cheese costs $2, that would be a .50 rise in price) I guess Kraft did the research, and found that more people would be upset with the rise in price.

Actually 1/8 would be .25 not .50. And in my area the price has gone up considerably more than that in the last year on cheese anyway, so if all bags are 7 oz now, then it is less cheese and still the higher price.

I guess one good thing about the recession is that we'll be eating a little less fat... :confused3

I make a fudge recipe that was my mom's. It contains Cadbury bars, fluff and evaporated milk. All have packages that have shrunk since my mom wrote up the recipe.

Now I have to buy extra to get the correct amounts. Since it results in delicious fudge I am not that upset.

I also shred my own cheese - but because I prefer the taste, not due to cost. I have a few shredders and graters and love them. It's not necessarily messy if you have the right equipment - some graters/shredders already have a bowl built into them so the cheese goes directly in a sealable container. Something to consider!
