LOVED the filet. We once went two nights in a row and had filet both nights. (We've eaten there four times and had filet every time!)
If you like it medium (or rare) ... it is a nice thick charbroiled piece cooked to perfection. If you like it well done (like DH - yes, he likes it well done & that is ok!), they will cut it in half (more like what I would call medallions ... and cook it perfectly. This place has even been brother-in-law tested and he hates just about everything -- and he loved his filet.
I was sad that we were unable to make our trip in Feb ... and I have to let my mouth water until next Feb before getting to Kona again.
I also found it the most reasonably priced filet (if you are not on the DDP that may make a difference.)
PS: The kona salad and/or homemade chicken soup is really good also ... plus the pot stickers ... and desserts are to die for. Oh and those lovely drinks with umbrellas too!
They have changed the menu around quite a bit but the steak has stayed the same. I did have a taste of the mahi mahi and it was very good but I am not sure they serve it now. Not sure if you are a steak eater or not.
Not to change this thread but are you staying at the Poly? **edited - if ONLY I would have read your signature! I see you are not at the Poly. ;-) ** but ... I think you like cats and that's a GOOD THING. HA HA!
The filet is very good, my DH usually orders the strip steak. He is very picky about his steak and enjoys this one alot.
We have had very good service each time here and look forward to another stop in December.
We don't even try for LeCellier anymore, the closeness of the tables is too much for us and we like the steaks better at Kona.
I had the filet in 2007 and it is WONDERFUL!!!! Very close in quality to the one at LeCellier. Just sooooo good! And the mashed potatoes that come with are wonderful also - not quite as good as the cream cheese ones at LeC, but still very, very good. I can't wait to eat at Kona again next year!
Oh, and my DH got the prime rib and enjoyed that very much, also!
We went last Oct and loved everything about it, the wings, salad, bread, cocktails, teriyaki steak....except the shrimp with noodles because it was in a super sweet sauce loaded with pineapple and red peppers
Kona is where DD ordered and FINISHED her very first prime rib at 11 last summer!
It's a must do for us now every trip. With DD ordering her Prime Rib, me and my filet(indeed as good as or better than Le Cellier, and superior to (GASP!) Yachtsman Steakhouse), plus DS with his NY Strip, we all share a few bites!
Kona has been an awesome surprise for our family and I am only sorry we waited so long to try it!!!
kona is great and is a must-do for us every trip! last year i got the filet and it was so tender it fell apart without using a knife! here's a pic for you...although i think they may have changed the preparation of the filet since we went last year.
this year my hubby got the strip steak and he said it was WONDERFUL! i know you asked specifically about the prime rib and the filet, but i had to mention this if you're interested in red meat because it was really good!
i had the tuna oscar this year - if you have any seafood lovers in your party, ORDER THIS! it's the best thing i've had to eat in a very long time.
and last but not least, the BEST part of going to the polynesian resort.....the lapu lapu a/k/a heaven in a pineapple.
