Does anyone have recommendations for a place to stay on the Big Island near these larger towns. The whole picking a hotel is just so overwhelming.

We stayed at the Hapuna Beach Prince hotel when we went, it was beautiful and actually had a lovely beach area (hard to find on the Big Island because of all the cliffs.) I would highly recommend it! It is north of the Kona airport.

We were just on the Big Island over Christmas. Hapuna Beach is a truly amazing gorgeous beach. Our boys had such fun body surfing.
We stayed at the Outrigger Kanaloa at Kona which is further south on the island in Kailua-Kona (still easy driving distance to Hapuna Beach and other sites) The Outrigger Kanaloa had a 2 bedroom suite, full kitchen on the golf course. They also have ocean view suites. Very nice, clean, reasonable price.
We stayed in Hilo at the Hilo Hawaiian.
It was a wonderful holiday - you will love it!

I second the OUtrigger Kanaloa at Kona.. It is absolutely terrific. We were upgraded to a 2 bedroom on the golf course. It was beautiful. I highly recommend it. We would stay there again in a heart beat.

Have a great vacation.

It is pricey, but beautiful. Also, interesting bit of info... Unless it has changed ownership since I have read about it, but it is owned by the man who created Beanie Babies, Ty Warner.

There are places to stay near the Volcano area, too. Don't forget the Volcano House (with hotel rooms sitting very near the crater!) and many bed and breakfasts.

There are the usual lists of resorts and so-many-star hotels, but if you want to go off the beaten path, there are a few places that are low budget. Just let me know and I will post.

Thanks for some ideas on where to start. The choices, especially in Kona are so varied. We want to explore in both directions and I am not sure where to put ourselves. Don't want to spend lots of a place to stay since we want to explore around. Does anyone know of Manego and whether it is nice to stay? I think I might have a coupon for the Hilo Hawaiian, how about that one? Thanks

If you are talking about the Manago Hotel in Captain Cook, I've eaten there. It is very old budget hotel, much different than the other accomodations people are mentioning - popular with locals. My brother and his wife stayed there when they first moved to Captain Cook and found it clean and budget friendly. Much of their accomodation is "Japanese style".

If you are interested in private rentals in that area, I can refer you to the website of the place I stayed last summer. Let me know and I'll pm you. It was not on the beach, but the location was reasonable for going either direction.

The Seraton Keahou is really noce and close very close to town in Kona. Farther north but very nice is the Mauna Lani Resort!
