I was out shopping tonight for last minute gifts and went into Kohl's. They had some great sales but the lines were 20 customers long with only 3 registers open! :scared1: Rather than get in line, I did some more shopping. In the course of shopping I noticed two young men, dressed almost alike :confused3 , who were employees, standing around chatting in women's lingerie. I said in a very nice tone, "I am surprised that there are so many people out on the floor when there are only a couple registers open and the lines are 20 customers deep". I was SHOCKED at the response. " Well, don't look at me, I am tired and my feet hurt and I am taking a break" in the nastiest, rudest tone one could imagine. I said, "Aren't you rude", and walked away. That would have been bad enough, but I could have overlooked it. Ten minutes later the Bobsy Twins show up in women's sports wear. They trot up to another employee and said; "A, you won't believe what some woman said to us" and they start their story, at which point I interupted and said, "You mean THIS woman?, you were very rude". Then they started shouting at me that they deserved a break, at which point I interupted and said, " I think your manager needs to hear about this. What are your names?" Both of them refused to tell me their names and walked out of the store. I turned to "A", who was very nice but said she "didn't want to get involved" by telling me their names, but she did tell me her name. I went to customer service and the manager came. She was very nice. I told her that I like Kohl's and that the employees have always been wonderful up until these two. She knew exactly who I was talking about and apologized, promising to talk to them. She then handed me a $25 gift card. I told her that she didn't need to give me anything, that I reported them because I like the store and they created a scene, not only to me, but other customers in the area. She insisted that I take the card. I thought she was very responsive and I certainly didn't expect anything.

I'm impressed the manager did something-our local Kohl's has go to be the most poorly managed store I've ever seen.

Wow, what rude little jerks! Sounds like the manager did well though. It's a shame, the employees they have to deal with.

I was at Kohls today too...the place was a madhouse. Well, everywhere was a madhouse, I'm sure. LOL.

I need to start up fights with employees to get some gift cards.

What little ****s! Glad you snarked on them and I hope they don't have a job tomorrow. Some people just aren't cut out for customer oriented jobs.

I would have been afraid to go back to my car. Seriously I would have, you hear so many crazy things that people do.

They are entitled to a break.... a permanent break, like here is your final check don't bother to come back!!!!!

it's also a shame that two guys who might have busted their butts all week are going to get in trouble with their manager for taking a minute to themselves.

I don't agree with what they said to you or how you were treated (and I'll admit right now I'm a very passive person) but I'm shocked that you had the nerve to say anything to them at all.

It's not really THEIR fault that registers are backed up. They're probably not trained/not allowed to work a register or else they probably would have been on one.

They also shouldn't have been spending their break meandering around the store if they weren't on the clock.. geez, Bobsy Twins.. show some common sense.

Sorta sad that the manager knew exactly who you were talking about, too. Must be holiday help.

If they need a "minute to themselves" then get off the sales floor; take it to the break room, or other non-public area.

I don't think that they would get into trouble for taking a well-deserved break. I think that they would get into trouble for their attitude towards a customer. Looking at it from a management's point of view, their attitude could cost the store lost revenue. If they acted like that to one customer, and the manager knew who she was talking about, there is a chance that they could have also acted in such a way with another customer who also may have been tired & short-tempered, which might have caused more problems in the store.

Absolutely - you never stand around taking a break out on the sales floor. Even if it is a break that you are fully entitled to - it looks very bad to the customers to see employees just standing around when the store is busy. Back in my retail days - if you were on the sales floor -you were working - you went to the back room or left the store on your breaks.

If they had said "yes, it sure is busy today isn't it? We're on our break" with a smile or even a stich of friendliness there wouldn't have been a problem.

Being tired is not an excuse for using a rude tone with a customer. Talking badly about customers out on the floor for everyone to hear is also offensive. As others have stated, I don't think the break is the issue.

It is also pretty poor form to take your break in the public space while a lot of people are waiting to be served. I would be surprised if it is something that is allowed.

I often ask salespeople on the floor for help or comment to them about things that pertain to their job. I didn't realize some people consider that picking fights.

Honestly, it sounds like holiday 'help'. Sometimes stores get desparate. Glad the manger was responsive. :)

Idle curiosity, you seem to have more than your fair share of bad shopping karma. Have you considered online shopping? I find some tremendous deals and frequently am able to get my shipping free and no tax. I get exactly what I want and usually for a much better price.

I frequently pay extra at independently owned local stores - for the extra money, I do get customer service. The added plus is that I support our community. But realistically I shop at department stores only when the sales are super good. I think as consumers, we get what we pay for. We want the cheap prices, so the department stores cut corners by highering Joe Blow who is just biding his time until he gets a better job.

Actually I don't have "more than my share" of bad shopping experiences. I can only recall two in the last couple of years, and I do shop on line, but I also like to go shopping and not everything can be bought efficiently or conveniently on line. I think you will find that in most communities there aren't a lot of "locally owned stores", with the exception of our hardware store and they don't sell gym clothes. The "customer service" I expect is to be dealt with politely and within a reasonable time limit, just like everyone else.

If they had "busted their butts" all week, then they should have been taking their break in the break room, or responded differently. It would have been perfectly fine to say, "I will check on that, thank you". "I will see the manager, thank you". "That's a good suggestion, thank you".

She was very sweet. I tried to refuse the gift card but she insisted that I take it. It seemed clear that this wasn't her first encounter with the dynamic duo. When I went to the parking lot, I saw them returning to work from Burger King. It was a rather long walk across the parking lot for such sore feet. :rotfl2:

Those employees were obnoxious, and deserve to be snitched on.

I am SO over Kohl's right now. Used to love them, but I've had nothing with bad luck with them this holiday season. I placed an online order THREE weeks ago, and they notified me yesterday that they cancelled part of it due to "product availability". I inquired about it over a week ago, and they assured me it would be here before Christmas Eve. So I find out three days before Christmas that it won't, and now I don't have time to find something else (and what would be left??). Thanks Kohls!

Same thing happened to me! I ordered weeks in advance so I wouldn't have to go to a mall so close to Christmas and, of course, that's what I ended up doing when they cancelled my order. You would think they would know a little earlier that my order wasn't going to be available.

Dawn, did the manager put more people on the registers?
