Know your birds? (identification request)

I am not sure how smart they are, as they constantly try to peck at the metal gutters!?
Woodpeckers use the pecking noise as their mating call. The gutter is probably louder than pecking a tree.

we have these woodpeckers, they like sunflower seeds and also peanut chips (try duncraft.com)

I'm glad they decide to do it at 6 am! :o :teeth:

This is a male red bellied woodpecker.

Flaps - your link is to the red headed woodpecker, the one cynsaun listed is for the red bellied woodpecker, that's why it looks different.

Yeah, they are cute but can be very destructive too. My friend had one that drilled baseball sized holes in the side of her cedar house. Since they are protected by law, she could do nothing to stop them. She ended having to get vinyl siding installed. :(

Cool bird!

The only types I've been getting are pigeons, and crows. I actually had a pigeon that kept smacking into my window like it had OCD or something. I had to spend about twenty dollars on things to scare it away with!:(

We have them here in our backyard, we're in NC. I am not sure how smart they are, as they constantly try to peck at the metal gutters!?

We had a Flicker that use to peck at a metal outflow pipe from our furnace. The pipe was huge... maybe 2 feet in diameter and was located on the roof. The whole house would ring when he started and he usually started as soon as the sun came up.

Around here we usually only see Downy Woodpeckers and an occasional Flicker. I'd love to see the red bellied or red headed ones at least once. What I'd really like to see is a Piliated Woodpecker. They're enormous!

Sorry 'bout your friends' home. :(

Interesting woodpecker info, all. Thanks again! :)

I didn't read through the thread, but that is a male Red-Bellied Woodpecker.

Most woodpeckers have some red on their head.

My first thought was a woodpecker. We've got one around here that looks VERY similar to the bird in your picture.
