If someone could identify what kind of bird this is, I'd really appreciate it. Thx! :)

That's kinda what I thought, but if it's a woodpecker, what kind specifically?

That's a redbellied wood pecker. It might not appear to have a red belly but apparently at a certain time of the year it grows a tiny patch of red on it's chest area (that is apparently hard to see even with binoculars).

hope that helps.

Ya know, now that I think about it, I HAVE tended to confuse them at times. Perfectly understandable, huh?

Since she thinks she's a dog, I thought she might be disguising herself as a bird sometimes too.;)

Flaps: may I ask which state you live in? (if the bird was in your yard?) My dad has 2 redbellied woodpeckers in his yard (one male, one female) that we tried forever to figure out what it is. They are so beautiful! We didn't think it was the 'redbellied woodpecker' because, , it didn't have a red belly! I wanted to get my dad a birdhouse for them to put eggs in, so I went to a store (birds unlimited) to ask what kind it was and what kind of birdhouse I needed.

They come right up to my dads deck because he leaves woodpecker suet out for them to eat. (he loves woodpeckers) We are in pennsylvania, so I was wondering where else these birds are living!

battricia- GA. The bird shows up from time to time, but doesn't stick around long at all. Pretty much grabs a seed or two and takes off. We just put out songbird seed w/sunflower seeds. We've seen him pretty much year-round. I think he was about the only one we get that we haven't identified.

Most likely. But we'd be more inclined to dine on the dozen or more mourning doves we get first. :teeth:

Here's a good photo showing the "red" belly.

It would be very hard to see from most angles.

We have them here in our backyard, we're in NC. I am not sure how smart they are, as they constantly try to peck at the metal gutters!?

Thanks for the photo, Virgo. :)
