The school that my kids go to struggles last year about money. The parish doesn't want to support it any more than it already does, and it doesn't want to support fund raisers that the school does because it already asks for so much money. They are constantly building new facilities, updating stations of the cross, etc.
With that in mind, the number of students has declined and they are always trying to find new students.
Yesterday, I talked to a friend of mine who also adopted children from Russia. Her grandchildren were in the same classes with my kids last year, but because they were going to send their newest kids to a different school, their older daughter was going to send her kids to the same public school. At kindergarten orientation, she decided that she didn't like the setup of the classrooms and the curriculum at that school and she wanted to transfer them to our school. She scheduled an appointment with the principal and was supposed to talk to her today.
She got a call yesterday from the principal. The meeting was cancelled because her intuition told her that the only reason that they wanted to transfer was because the school district was going to go on strike and she knew that my friend was only trying to get her kids out of the house instead of having to keep them home with her. She's a SAHM and has had the kids home with her all summer. Nothing could be further from the truth. Her "intuition" told her that the kids would be transferred back to the public school when the strike was settled. Her intuition was wrong.
So, not only did the principal turn down these 2 kids, but also the 2 grandchildren. That's an extra $6,000 for the school's pocket that she gave up.
Additionally, the principal told her that they already have enough Russian children in the school. Those would be my DS and DD. I was furious at this comment. My kids have been in this country for almost a year. They only speak English and their teachers have told me that they are doing better than many of the American-born kids in their classes. Yep, I guess you wouldn't want other children who might do better than the others. The other two Russian kids have been in America since May and also speak fluent English.
Her daughter won't send her kids back either, now, since the principal dissed on her new brother and sister.
These are 4 children that I know that she turned away. I wonder how many others she's blacklisted, too. I was happy to share this story with the officers of the PTO. They are also livid.
