DH wants to subscribe to one or two or three...
Background: We just spent some time in Yellowstone National Park. DH really enjoyed the little bit of hiking we were able to do. We have enough info prior to arrival to really plan ahead. He wants to know about dealing with the local wildlife, geography, plant life, insects...; specific techniques for different terrains/types of hikes; trail info; maps; gear.....

Wasn't Yellowstone just spectacular? I hope you got to see tons of wildlife - we've been twice and we'll definately be back. I would go every year, if only there weren't so many other places I'd like to see. We take a backpacking trip every year - lots of great destinations out there.

As for magazines, we like Backpacker. Another possibility is Outside, although it covers all kinds of outdoor activities (rafting, biking, etc) besides just hiking.

I would suggest Backpacker, too. :)

We were at Yellowstone 7 years ago - would love to go back someday.

Spectacular is right! We did see plenty of wildlife & heard the wolves at 4 a.m.! We are seriously considering returning to Yellowstone next year. It was wonderful. Since it was a 4 night stop on a three week vacation, the only real preplanning we did was reserving a campsite at Canyon Campground. Now DH has a book on Day Hikes in Yellowstone and several USGS maps. He is determined to get into the backcountry with our boys. He is waiting for them to get big enough to handle a hike into & (more importantly) out of the Grand Canyon.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I was able to locate Backpacker's website. What a gem!
