When my kids were about 6 years old and right through high school, they loved the big sets and would spend all their free time building the more complex kits.
Toys r us sometimes runs sales, AC moore will run the sets 50% off or take the 50% off coupon if not on sale.

This was the first Christmas in about 10 years that my son didn't receive a K'nex set. He adored them for a very long time!
