Kmart removes "beyond inappropriate" costume after backlash

In truth, I think it actually looks like a First Holy Communion outfit.

There are black and white varieties of real pumpkins. I think the black jack o’lanterns look neat.

Our KMART (Atlantic County NJ) is having a closing sale right now. They’ll be gone before Christmas.

We would "play" First Holy Communion (or Mass) when we were kids. A Necco wafer candy was the Communion wafer.

I have a black jack o'lantern that lights up, but it has green eyes, nose, and mouth cutouts. I can see how the BB&B one would be offensive.



My local K-Mart survived many rounds of closings, but not the last one. It started its going out of business sale right after Labor Day. They have MORE merchandise in it now than they did this past summer. And a sign in the window says they're still hiring!!!

I'm jealous! All the Dayton ones went belly up two years ago, and I don't believe there are any others in Cinci or Columbus.

There's two in Cincy suburbs. One is on the west side of town in Harrison, other is by CVG airport (in NKY) Erlanger off Dixie Hwy.

lol that actually reminds me of the story my mother-in-law still tells. Her youngest years ago had a Halloween party and that year she dressed up as the devil. It never dawned on my mother-in-law that the venue for the party that year, a church, might not be on board for that particular costume

In 2nd or 3rd grade at my Catholic school, a kid showed up in a devil costume for Halloween. The nun sent him to the principal's office and he had to go home and get changed.

LOL, I’ve done that drive too! But it’s not as crowded as the Cincy-Dayton drive. We drive to MI often to visit family, the worst stretch 95% of the time is Cincy to Dayton. Close second the M23 by Ann Arbor, but that is much improved.

Ahh, if crowded is your benchmark, I offer from the 275 on the northern side of Cinci to ~mm171 in Ky. HATE it!

What does this mean for all of those folks who dress up flower girls as miniature brides?

I get the human rights concern, but I think that claiming that Halloween costumes are promoting child marriage is a real stretch. If that were the case, we would also have issues with costumes like gangsters and pirates.

When DD was 9 she dressed as The Bride from the Haunted Mansion for Halloween. I cut down a white Gunne Sax type dress we found at the Goodwill, and she wore her 1st Communion veil, six ropes of costume pearls and carried a cardboard hatchet. Sadly, most of our neighbors didn't get it at all, but a few did, and one lady liked it so much that she insisted on taking a photo.

PS: Child marriage *is* still a very valid concern in the US and in other Western countries, but I don't think that dressing up as a happy bride on Halloween has any relation to that practice whatsoever.

FWIW, there *are* a fair number of Western underage brides who get married dressed in a white dress and veil. There are several fundamentalist sects in the US that have historically practiced parent-arranged marriage involving younger teen girls, in addition to what we Americans call "shotgun weddings" that can result from assaults by older men on adolescent girls. "Shotgun weddings" still happen in the US; though they have thankfully become less common as the stigma of unwed motherhood has lessened. The term "child bride" covers the marriage of any female who has not yet reached legal adulthoood. But if one's jack o'lantern looks like it should be singing "Swanee, how I love ya, how I love ya", one might want to rethink their design.

As an Australian, it doesn’t offend me. I’m really more confused as to why we even celebrate Halloween over here. It’s never been a celebration however the last 5-8 years have seen retailers try and push it to become a “thing”. Luckily for me I have a massive electric gate which means no one can even get to my front door to bother me.

Most of my thoughts about this have already been said, but dang. How many centuries have little girls dressed up as brides for pretend and played "wedding"...all perfectly natural and healthy with no underlying nefarious meaning. My goodness, what's next? Can't dress like "mom" and play "house"? Can't pretend your dolls are your babies? That's it! No more baby dolls! It promotes underage pregnancy! Sickening!!
