I will be remodeling my kitchen and most appliances in the stores are stainless steel . I do not care for stainless and it is more expensive than white. My cabinets will be white and we will probably be in this house for another 10 years. Do you think in 10 years stainless will still be popular?

Probably not. However, I am not sure at this point we know what will be popular. If you are going to stay in the house for 10 years, I would get what you like because kitchen appliances are not made to last like they used to. In other words, in 10 years you may very well need to replace a refrigerator or dishwasher anyway.

If you were selling in the shorter term, I would tell you to consider the stainless. If you are going to go through the expense or remodeling, I would try to make things look as current as possible. If in the years, stainless looked dated, white is going to look even more dated. If white appliances make a comeback, they will probably look different than pervious generation white appliances.

Yes. But I don't think that should be part of your decision. if you want white, and you'll be in the house for 10 years to enjoy white, buy white. I would not make my decisions based on perceived loss of value between stainless and white 10 years from now. I'd imagine in 10 years, they'll need to be replaced by new homeowners anyway.

I think stainless steel appliances will still be the most popular choice. It's been the most popular choice for over 10 years now and I don't see any signs of it slowing down yet. The reason I think it will still be the best choice is because it gives off the appearance of a professional/commercial kitchen, it looks cleaner/more sterile, and it's considered the most modern finish.

Ultimately I would choose whatever finish you will personally enjoy because 10 years from now, your appliances will be considered somewhat outdated regardless of the finish...if they're even still working! If you really want white appliances, go for white, but consider how they will blend with your white cabinets. If your cabinets are more of a creamy white, white appliances will look terrible. The finishes need to be very similar in order to not look weird.

I agree with the previous poster that if white appliances make a big comeback, the finish will be different than what they currently are. I think there is a more modern white finish by one manufacturer called White Ice or something like that.

It doesn't matter because your appliances probably won't last 10 years. Buy the appliances that YOU want, you have to live with them for the next 10 years or however long they last. Liking or not liking the color of the appliances is a stupid reason for passing up buying a home, I would not even be worrying about what a potential buyer might think that far down the road.

Agreed with Scrapquitler. And, there are other issues to consider. For example, what colors will your kitchen cabinets, counter, walls and floor be? What size is your kitchen? If you have a galley kitchen, for example, you may prefer appliances that blend rather than contrast with the color of your cabinets and counter.

I agree with those that say buy what you want since you'll be there at least another 10 years. Plus, not everyone likes stainless steel appliances and honestly they don't look good in all houses/kitchens depending on the era of the house and how it's decorated.

I just remodeled our kitchen ( a year ago) and the issue we had was Sharp had discontinued the white and bisque colors in the microwave model we wanted (a drawer microwave) so we had no choice but to go with stainless steel.
Man, if any appliance in my house fails after only 10 years, I'm going to be angry. The stuff we replaced was 27+ years old and functioned fine, it just was out of style.

I am in the process of remodeling and expanding my kitchen. I went with white cabinets and white appliances because it's what I like. If the big box stores don't have white, check with a smaller store that just specializes in appliances.

I read an article that said most appliances are manufactured with a 5-8 year life span 'nowadays' I guess the manufacturers feel that if they make appliances to last 25 years, they will be missing out on you buying 3-4 new ones in that time frame.

That's just terrible. 5-8 year life span. Makes you want to NOT use your kitchen appliances for fear of ruining them too quickly...lol

Boy, I totally believe that! Our 5-10 year old appliances are all on their last legs. In fact, I'm not sure the dishwasher EVER worked well, the microwave door is held together with clear packing tape, the fridge needs to be completely emptied and defrosted once a year, and only three burners work on the stove. Ugh. I need a kitchen remodel too.

Honestly WHO CARES what will be popular in 10 years? You have to live with it for the next 10 years. Get what you like, not what might or might not be popular in 10 years.

The appliance showroom I bought everything from includes the manufacturers 10 year extended warranty on everything, so at least I won't pay for any repairs if they don't make it 10 years.

I don't like stainless either--it screams "morgue" to me. Unless I was remodeling just to sell, I'd buy white. And with a ten year timeline to sell, don't worry about it.

Eh...you never know -- white kitchen cabinets might be back in style again 10 years from now. We built our house in 2003 and used a custom home builder so I had *a lot* of decisions to make when it came to the kitchen design. I went to a lot of different sample homes (all different builders) and a few open houses just to look at kitchens for ideas. 95% of the new houses or houses with remodeled kitchens I went into had white cabinets (the rest had oak cabinets). Three of our friends who built houses around the same time as us put in white kitchens. We went with maple cabinets. But apparently white is back (or still) in style.

Our son who is a HS senior now was in kindergarten when we remodeled. The Maytag dishwasher that we had installed back then has been replaced by a Kenmore elite, which had the wheel brackets break at least 3x after the warranty ended. At $37 each through Sears Parts website, I finally stocked up on some from Amazon at $20 thinking I was being smart. Then in Sept the whole DW died so we are on #3, a Bosch, which I love but still don't expect to last. I think I still have a spare bracket w/wheels. A month before that DW died, our wall oven died. A few months before that our Hoover vacuum died and 2 months before that our Bissell carpet steam-cleaner died. Not a good summer for appliances for us. We've also replaced the microwave at least once since the remodel.
Miraculously, the fridge and cooktop are going strong. The icemaker had to be replaced but overall it's a gem.

The whole situation is sickening.

I sold my parents house in 2013. Original Westinghouse wall oven and cook top, and original Lennox furnace and air conditioning from 1960 still there and working perfectly. Some investors bought it and remodeled the kitchen and swapped the oven and cook top to gas. Put $100,000+ in remodeling but darned if they didn't leave that 53 year old heating and a/c system there. I about fell over when I toured the open house and opened the furnace closet up.
