I am a child of the 80's and remember when it was in New York City. A girl in my class was able to go- the tickets were hard to come by. I wanted to go desperately, but my parents could not get the tickets. All I could think is someday, when I am grown, I will see that exhibit!
Fast forward to last winter, and the Tut exhibit comes to Philly. Suddenly, I a that sixth grade girl again, but this time I CAN BUY MY OWN TICKETS!
As we walked up the steps of the Franklin Institute, I was giddy because I was now about to fulfill a lifelong dream. The steps of the institute were decorated with a mural that made it look as if you were climbing up the iconic mask itself. Let's face it- when you think of King Tut, that is what comes to mind.
The exhibit was superb- lots of things from other Pharohs, beautiful things...But all I could wonder was "WHERE IS MY MASK????"
So, we get to the last room, NO MASK!!! NO WAY!!!! Suddenly, now I know how Charlie Brown felt when Lucy pulled the football away- totally HOODWINKED!!
Subsequently, there was an article in the NY Times the next week that said the Egyptian government does not let the mask travel- they claim it is too fragile. The Times asserted that it is their biggest museum money maker.
AGGHHHHH!!!! The exhibit was great, don't get me wrong, but don't advertise with the mask, decorate the freakin steps with the mask and then don't have it. Boy was I bummed.
