King Arthur

I just wonder why Disney was not given the opportunity to make the Harry Potter movies or if they were, why did they turn it down. To me that is like the ultimate slap in the face. People I knew automatically assumed it was a Disney movie! Same with LOTR... to me it would also be the type of movie that I would assume the old Disney might have made.

If anyone remembers, LOTR was held by Disney. It was tied up with Miramax and was going to have a budget of 30-50 million and be told in 1 3 hour movie.

THank the lord that Disney droped it and the almost bankrupt New Line picked it up and told PJ to make into 3 movies and gave him almost 300 million to make it.

I love Disney, but they and Miramax and the Weinstiens (max and wein's need to be sold off) would have had another alamo or HM or CB on their hands.

I have a grandson, age 7, who is enthralled with the story of King Arthur. Comes from having a grandma who was an English Lit. major. LOL

Could someone tell me if this version is, as I have been informed recently, more to do with the love triangle with little of the Merlin/Excalibur legend? Violence is fine with him, he is a boy after all, but too much kissing bores him and if there is little of the legend he would doubt my version of the story. (smile)

IOW, should I take him now, wait for the cheaper second run version or even bother renting the DVD when it comes out or possibly do all and save some of my Disney dollars to actually buy him a copy?

Thank you for your input.

Merlin and Excalibur are in the movie but not focused on too much. There is romance, but again it plays a small part. This version focuses on the theory of Arthur as a Roman soldier. To paraphrase Martin Mull, there's lots of violins but virtually no sax! In fact, Gwen goes warrior in this one.

I'm surprised it's still playing in your area. I think it's even left the second run theatres where I live.

wtg2000, thank you for the great review. Lots of violins and no sax. LOL Have not heard Martin Mull's name in many a day. We must be contempories.

I always allowed my kids to watch the sax but not the violins as I could explain the one but not the other but it is a different deal with grandkids, parents rule. LOL

We live in the boonies so it is just now coming into our second run house. I am too cheap to go to the regular movie house anyway and always wait for the second run shows. I save all my money for DW. Headed there for 16 days soon. Well worth the small sacrifices IMHO.

My grandson would enjoy the war parts even if fought by a woman, just as long as she is not kissing someone ALL the time. (grin)

From an update on this same board.

Disney's domestic disappointment, "King Arthur," is regaining stature at the foreign box office, leading the pack last weekend with a $12.3 million haul from 32 countries, raising its international total to $91.7 million.

Based on this the movie could end up pulling in 200 million worldwide before DVD sales. I missed it at the theater, but I'm interested in the DVD(rumored to have a very good extended version).
