Kindle? Why not a good old fashioned book?

No remembering where I left a book or which shelf I left it on or whose bed it might be hiding under. My entire library is right there in one little gizmo. I carry over 1000 books with me....
Haven't read the whole thread, but this point here stood out for me. If one is going to forget where they left a single book, wouldn't it be just as easy now to forget where one leaves their entire library of 1000+ books? :scratchin

I am an avid book reader, my wife is an avid book reader, and now both of our girls are avid book readers. In fact, my 1st grader's teacher keeps sending home chapter books for her to read instead of the little 3 sentence per page little booklets that are sent home for the reading lessons.

I can't stand reading stuff electronically. I have plenty of reference books on photography or guitar that I have electronic and I print them out to read instead of reading them on the computer or laptop. I print out a lot of articles on my guitar websites I frequent instead of reading them electronically. I print out the more important emails at work instead of reading them on the screen.

The biggest fear about the electronic reader gadget... I'd be afraid of it getting knocked off the back of the toilet! :rotfl2:

reading on the nook or kindle is nothing like reading on a computer screen. its completely different technology that has never been used anywhere else before.

Not really, since my Kindle is pretty much is always with me. You know how some people are attached to their Blackberries? That's me and my Kindle.

And yeah, as has been mentioned numerous times - reading from a Kindle is nothing at all like reading from a computer screen. I'd invite you to stop by the displays sometime at Best Buy or Target and check out what eInk looks like.

My kindle books are part of my amazon account. So even if my kindle is damaged or lost I can get my books back by downloading them to a new kindle that Ive registered to my account. Amazon customer service is awesome about replacing damaged kindles. There are reports of them not only replacing them for free. But they also pay for the shipping. They can deactivate a lost kindle so that it essentially becomes a brick if you report it as lost. There is a big difference between back lit screens like laptops or iphones and reading e ink documents. I see that k3 kindles are now available at staples, target and best buy. You might want to take a look at them or any of them other ereaders they have on display. There is much less eyestrain.

What is the fascination with Kindle's and E-Readers? Why are they replacing books? I absolutely love my home library. When I read, I like holding a book and flipping the pages. It seems though, that books are becoming obsolete. What makes electronic books better than paper books?
I'm as techie as the next guy ---actually I'm more techie than the next 5 guys;
Nothing is better than a paper book!

Plus... many Kindle books let you sample a chapter or so. I just dowloaded a sample of Jim Korkis' new book THE VAULT OF WALT to the family Kindle. Good stuff.

You've tried the kindle or nook and it didn't work for you? I know I felt that way until I actually used one. I was shocked at how much I like it.

I love my Kindle :lovestruc

No more trying to pack enough books in my carryon for the long international flights. No more trying to find books in English that don't cost and arm & a leg if I don't:rotfl:

And for DF - no more complaining about the stacks of books ;)

my question - can you surf the internet using 3g on the nook?

Not on the Nook. To use their browser, you have to be in a WiFi zone. On the Kindle, however, you can use the browser with the 3G. I got mine yesterday and played with it. I can read the DISboards just fine. :lmao: HOWEVER, it is cumbersome for a browser, so I won't use it as a replacement for my Droid for the most part, but it will come in very handy just for looking stuff up in general when I am at work and away from WiFi.

No reason, it's just a word.
Has "gizmo" become a 4 letter word and nobody told me? ;)

"Gizmo: A nonsensical placeholder name for something that one does not know the proper term for; gadget; whatchamacallit; thingamajig; jobbyjobber."

I never said that anyone had to agree with me...:rotfl:
and anyone can like anything they choose to.
You can call me an "alternative opinion."
Sorry if my opinion offended you, it's only my opinion.:upsidedow
I like a real book as I sit enjoying the fire in my wood stove,
and if the power goes out for 5 days like it does
every other winter when we get an ice storm,
I'll still be enjoying my real book by the warmth of my wood stove.:cloud9:

Oh I wasn't offended, it just seemed odd since you did know the proper name for it, you would add the nonsensical word gizmo to the word kindle...see your definition above...
:confused3

Enjoy your books! I think we agree that is the important thing! I enjoy both my books and my kindle! :)

My DW got me a Kindle because I love to read... but it doesn't replace traditional books. Especially when I go on vacation, like WDW, the Kindle is a life-saver, or should I say, luggage saver? I can bring as many books with me as I want- which for me is priceless!:mickeyjum

Simple: If you have multiple bookshelves with hundreds and hundreds of books, and you haven't thought about THAT SPECIAL BOOK in quite some time, it's sometimes hard to lay your hands on it. Maybe you were SURE that it was on the bookshelf in the office . . . but it finally turned up on the hall bookshelf (or under your bed). Or maybe you remembered the book as blue, but it was actually more like aqua . . . so you scanned and scanned your bookshelf for the wrong color. Or maybe you lent it to a friend, who never returned it.

On the other hand, if ALL your books are in the same place (in your e-reader), you're going to use that "one book" every single day (I do anyway). It's not going to be put away and forgotten. It never makes it to the bottom of the pile. Mine is almost always on my nightstand.

However, I wouldn't give an e-reader to a child who's still prone to carelessly losing things on the bus, at a friend's house, etc. Too expensive.

Yep. It's not like a computer screen.

I am a AVID reader, almost 5 books a week and I just dont have the room for all these books. I am also a traveler and its easy to download books and keep them in my online folder.

I love my Kindle... and it really beats having stacks of paperbacks all over the house!

I loved it even more once I got a beautiful leather cover for it from Oberon Designs. Now it feels a lot more book-like in my hands. :thumbsup2

When I buy a book it just ends up being left someplace- like on the train or anyplace when I am done with it because I don't want to clutter up my home with a bunch of books I already read- I will never re-read a book I already read so whats the point of keeping it.

Many people have already hit the highlights. I love my Kindle and couldn't imagine not having an e-reader. Travel convenience was the #1 purpose in my receiving one (gift) and it totally fit the bill. I used to go on a week long vacation with 3-4 paperbacks and I would just leave the paperbacks at the hotel because I didn't want to come back home with them!

In bed, I lay on my side usually with a cat curled up next to me. With a real book, I'd have a hard time turning the page where with my Kindle I just hold it with my hand on the "next" button. Simple - and my cat loves that I can pay more attention to her while I read :b

I keep the wireless turned off 99% of the time (unless I am downloading a book), and the charge stays for about a month.

Depending on how tired I am, I can make the font bigger or smaller.

Whoever said that people won't judge you for a trashy romance was right! No one knows what I am ever reading. I can read the same book 4x and not get teased by DH because just doesn't know ;)

Environmental, practical, economical over the long run.....it just goes on and on.

I have never valued a book by its physical book form. I value a book by its story. So does it matter the medium it arrives in?

Just got the Nook - as I posted previously I was going to get the Kindle, but I checked them out at Staples then went to B&N and looked at the Nook and I just liked the Nook better. I really like the color touch screen (I thought I'd prefer the keypad of the Kindle) and love the epub sharing aspect of it. So now DD and I each have a Nook - looks like we will be sharing books after all! I also liked the library book option - that's going to be awesome!!! Now DH is taking a nap and I can't get on the wifi to register it because he has to put the mac address on! ARGH! In the meantime I'm going to put some music and pics on for wallpaper! :thumbsup2

I totally agree with you.
1. I can't afford a kindle gizmo.
2. If we lose power, as long as we have an oil lamp or candle, I can read.
3. I'm kinda old-fashioned and I like books too, as well as
keeping my budget tight and can't help but think
this whole electronic book thing is a racket:
you have to buy the books and I haven't seen any of these available at the library for free, like real books.
Not to mention, will the books be like the gaming systems where they are constantly being updated and old games
won't play on new players so you have to buy the new version of the same thing?

We don't have a gaming system either or a Wii and we still manage to stay quite busy and happy :goodvibes without these things
And to top it all off, my cell phone is only a phone- it doesn't take pictures or surf the web, or play games or anything else ;)
and I like it that way :thumbsup2

I see that you are typing in large font, My husband also uses large font when he types as his vision is poor d/t many eye surgeries. He loves his Nook as he can get any book he would like to read not worring if it is in Large Print. He is an avid reaser(can finish off a novel in several hours), and being able to get books from the library for his Nook is wonderful. He takes it with him everywhere. It took a while for him to get used to, he is not a big techno guy and he has a tough time with e-mail sometimes, but he really enjoys his Nook

I didn't read all the responses but this is why I have one. DH had a Kindle for the longest time and when I was reading the last Twilight book, 800+ pages, hardback. I said, let me just try it on your Kindle. OMG it was so much better than holding a book, I was sold and never went back.
