Kindle- what age and light for it?

My son, 9, loves to read. Since I got a Kindle, he keeps asking for one. They are 40% off on Amazon, so I was thinking of getting one for him for Christmas. Are there many books on Kindle for that age? (Especially free ones from either Amazon or the library.)

Also, is there a cheaper light available for it? He likes to read at night in bed, but the cases I saw were $60, more than the Kindle!

Any advice for this age would be appreciated! I just got mine for Mother's Day and haven't had much time this summer to "play" with it and figure out all that's available to use with it.

We got DD's light from MEDGE - and it was @$20. We also got DD a nice cover for her Kindle - thanks to a post from a DIS'er that shared a great deal sometime in late November or early December.

I bought cases with the lights in them. I figured that we needed cases anyway and this way the light never gets separated. I purchased them on amazon for a reasonable price. I think 9 or 10 is fine for a kindle if you say that it does not leave the house or only goes in house and car. There are tons of free books. If you join amazon prime ($75 per year) there are lots of books to be borrowed. Amazon prime gives you free shipping all year. If you use Amazon alot, it more than pays for itself. I find our library to have long electronic waiting lists but once i got to the top, there were some good books to borrow. One thing that i think is great for kids is that so many of the classics are not under copyright and are free. There are also many low cost books. I recently bought an Agatha Christie book that was on the summer reading list. I paid 2.99. We have to buy all our books, so this was much cheaper than barnes and noble and much easier than the library.

You only need a light if you want to read at night with the lights out.

The Kindle Fires are backlit, so those don't need a light.

We got DD10 a Kindle for Christmas. (not a fire) My BIL got a her a booklight type thing for it. It was SUCH a bad idea. I can't tell you how many times I've done down the hall at midnight and found her reading in bed. I finally had to confiscate the light

I guess I'm out of luck then.
I have a Kindle2 that's starting to get persnickety- but I have points and GCs that I could use for it.
It's just so hard to give my Eppie up for something new.

Kindles are great - I love mine - and there are a lot of libraries who are renting out e-books as well.

You can also go to www.ereaderiq.com and sign up. This is an aggregate site that lists all the free - and legal - books you can download for your kindle daily. It's an awesome service. Many books for all age ranges.

As for a light: I used to have the Kindle case with the light built in. It's expensive and makes the kindle really heavy. I have since gone with a lighter (and cheaper) case, and use a cheap clip on light which works wonderfully:

Good luck - I think an e-reader is a great gift for a kid. Anything to get kids to read is wonderful!

I use a clip on kindle light for mine.

I got 9 yr old a Fire for Christmas because she loves to read. It backfired. She uses it for watching netflix and playing apps! She loves it and we haven't gotten our money's worth but she doesn't read on it nearly as much as I wish she would.

Kindle Fires aren't e-readers in the sense that they use e-ink; they're back lit like a Ipad so no light needed. DD9 has a Kindle Touch for reading, she really only uses my Fire when she wants to play games.

Some people have reported that the promotional code + the Amazon visa gives you 40% on accessories also.

My husband got a clip on light at Academy Sports for $6 that works on my Kindle. He said it is designed for fisherman, but it works on the Kindle Touch. I looked at lights that were $20 and this one works great.

We share a kindle fire. For my kids I find lots of free books thru kotc kids on facebook. There is also kotc teens.

LOL, that sounds like my ds! I thought the Kindle light would help some of the complaining his brother does when he reads in bed at night with his reading lamp on.

Thanks for all the replies! I got two Kindles for my sons' for either Christmas or their birthday. (Hopefully it will encourage my other son to read more, also!) Can't beat the $47 price! Thanks for those other sites with kids books!
