Kindle vs Nook

I played with both a kindle and a nook before making my decision and I found the kindle easier to figure out. The Kindle was easier to navigate and took less time to open books, plus the dictionary was easier to use. Of course this was when the nook first made it into stores so they could have improved things since then.

I got my Kindle in January and since then I have downloaded approximately 200 free books. It has been fun discovering new authors I normally wouldn't have even heard about. With the amount of free books they offer, I haven't been too disappointed with the lack of library books.

If you do get a Kindle feedbooks.com and smashwords.com are good websites to get free or cheap books other than amazon. Projest Gutenberg is also good and they just added a mobile website that you can type into the kindle's web browser and download books directly to the kindle, http://m.gutenberg.org

Where did you get a chance to play with the Kindle? I'm going today to try out the nook at B&N, but where is the Kindle? I'm sure it's obvious, but I'm lost! :rotfl: DH has been talking about ereaders for the past year, but he keeps going back and forth between the pros and cons. I think he would buy them all if I let him have the check book! :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Thanks!

Target hasthe Kindle now. You can try it out there. I think I read that Best Buy has the Nook and with their return policy it was easier to return the Nook if it wasn't for you.
I have a Kindle and want the Nook too for the library thing. I did have a problem with my Kindle while on vacation. I got lines on my screen, it was probably my fault for throwing in beach bag. I was just sick about it, I called Amazon and because it was less than a year old they sent me a new one. It was at my house within 2 days. Can't beat that.

I don't know about other Targets, but at ours, the Kindle they display is a non-working model. Not the best way to sell the product.

Both Best Buy and Barnes and Noble have working nooks you can look at and try out.

I believe Best Buy also has the sony e-reader. :)

They remodeled our Target and I haven't seen the Kindle display since. Nooks have a 14 day return policy, Kindles have a 30 day. Borders also carries the Sony e-readers and the new Kobo. I think the Kobo was designed as a low cost alternative to Nook and Kindle but that was right before all the prices took a dive last month. Be interesting to see what they re-price the Kobo to in the near future.

The newest Kindle isn't out yet. Another 2 weeks to go! It would be great if the Targets got them right away.

Same here, no working Kindle in our target either. I even stopped by a target 50mi away to see if they have a working one... nope.
BB has a working Nook and (ours) has a non working Sony.
But the best place to get your hands on Nook is to go to B&N store. Plus the Nook expert there can tell you what the device can and can't do, and show you how to work it.

So wait ... you are able to read the library books on your Kindle? I thought people were saying you can only read the library books on the Nook. Is it just a matter of converting the file types? Is it legal and/or easy?

Maggie

Yes, I can put library books that are PDF, EPUB and MOBI on my Kindle after converting the downloaded files. It is relatively easy. Anyone with a pc (or mac, but fewer books are available for mac) can download library e-books and read them on their pc. I find them easier to read on my Kindle so I take the extra 2 minute step of removing the DRM from the file and converting it to a format Kindle handles. When I have finished reading the book I delete it, just as I would if I were returning the book to the library. The Nook reads Epub files without conversion, but not MOBI or PDF from the libraries.

Actually, the Nook does read EPUB and PDF, just not MOBI.

Really the best way to try out a Kindle is to order one and try it out. They have a no questions asked 30 day return policy with free shipping - so get one and carry it around for a day or two if you like. Please note...do NOT try this with a Target Kindle. Target is being much fussier about Kindle returns. Order it from Amazon and then take it into the Barnes and Noble to compare to the nook.

I agree about the Target displays. They suck. My guess is that Amazon was thinking they didn't want to have to rely on Target employees to demonstrate their product so they came up with that little faux-video. But to not even have a model there that people can test drive is an extremely poor decision.

All the Targets here are out of stock on Kindles. They think they'll probably be getting the K3s in September, but no word on if the display will be updated.

I'm also looking into an E-reader for my Christmas gift. I plan on reading books that I buy through internet. The library option is out, since I like to read at my leisure. My main reason for wanting one is to not have piles of books in the house.

DH and I will use the same one. He reads in the morning while having coffee and I read during the day and at night.

So how does the nook work with library books? I've used the audio book downloads from our library to put them onto my ipod. But it says that after the checkout period it will expire from the computer but not from the ipod that it was transferred to. Is that how ebooks work also? Or do they actually have a way to get in and delete it off the nook after the checkout period?

Well In my case I found someone who had one and they were nice enough to let me check it out.

It doesn't read PDF with DRM, or Mobi with or without DRM.

Yes, the Nook does support PDF with Adobe DRM. I haven't tried it personally because I think PDF looks terrible on e-readers with screens the size they have because PDF doesn't reflow well, but the Nook does support it. If there is some other DRM flavor on PDF files, then Nook doesn't support that, but Adobe DRM it does.

Definitely doesn't support any kind of MOBI though - non-DRM MOBI can be converted with Calibre to a Nook-supported format, and I have tried that with a couple of non-DRM Kindle books, but it's a pain.

just got a BJs email that they have an Aluratek reader for $119 with coupon and shipping included. Never heard of that one. looks bulky in the pic

That's good to know. I helped my neighbor convert a PDF with DRM for her Nook a few months ago so I just assumed they weren't supported. Now I know it was user error, unless that's a new feature :rotfl:

I use Calibre to convert mobi, pdf and epub. Other than importing the file and sending it to the device it's not complicated or time consuming. My daughter has a Sony e-reader so I convert files between the two fairly often. It would be wonderful if everyone decided on a single format soon! Until then, I will just do what I do to make technology work for me!

I'm ridiculously excited about this, but I just bought a NOOK! :goodvibes

I saved up $60 in B & N gift cards from My Points and used my $100 Verizon rebate Visa debit card to buy the $149 Nook (Wi-fi only). I have a Droid, and with the new 2.2 update, I can create a wi-fi hotspot with my phone, so I didn't need the extra 3G access.

It's plugged in and charging and as soon as it's done, I'm downloading the Hunger Games!!!!!!

See? I'm ridiculously excited about this...and now I'll be used to it and able to have it for our Disney trip in 5 weeks!

yay! Hunger Games is what my son downloaded first, too

since I got mine a few months ago, I've been reading non-stop and now my other favorite device is too full, my tivo, lol

:worship::worship::worship::worship:

Thanks for all the info! DH decided he wanted the nook, so guess what he got for his b-day when he came home from work?? :thumbsup2 Now I just have to see when I get to use it! :rotfl2:

Just bought my nook on Saturday. Yeah!!! I no longer have to take 10 books on vacation. :woohoo:
