I am about to pre-order a kindle touch. Any thougts on weather its worth it to preorder or just buy one from Staples when they get them in? I am also wondering what accessories I should get to go with it too? Do I need the $10 power cord? Do I need a case? If I order the case its going to cost me $30 to $40 which defintitly adds to the cost.

Jen.

I have an e-reader (not a Kindle) and the accessories I find I really use are the cover (leather w/a book light), screen protector and the wall charger. I bought all my accessories on ebay for a fraction of what the "store" would have charged.

Definitely recommend both a cover and a light. I have a nook and would find it difficult to use as often without either.

I'm holding off on a case for my new Kindle because I ordered the Special Offers version and one of the special offers in the past was the lighted case at a significant discount - so I'm hoping for a repeat of that.

The power adapter is the plug-in for the wall. You can use an iPhone one or one of those multi-purpose wall plugs if you have that.

I am also trying to decide whether or not to pre-order.

We leave for a major vacation on Nov. 17th - they are being released Nov. 15th. Does that mean they will be shipped Nov. 15th? If I pre-order now, can I get overnight shipping to receive Nov. 16th? Or should I take my chances and hope that a local Best Buy or Staples has them in stock the 15th?

I can easily have all my purchases made (I will have already downloaded them to my ipad), so all I would need to do it sync and charge it and we'd be ready to go.

any thoughts?

I say pre-order. With their new lower price, I think these are going to be a hot item this year, and if you don't pre-order, I fear you might be left out.

Also, do get a cover right away. Before I got mine, I was a little afraid of dropping it or damaging it somehow. It's an expensive toy and should be protected.

Preorder and get a cover. I was given a Kindle for my birthday. The gift came with a sleeve for my Kindle. While it protects the Kindle when I'm not using it, I hate holding just the Kindle when I'm reading. It feels wrong. So I'm currently on a quest to find a good cover. The best selection is on Amazon... hard to find a cover anywhere else.

I got my kindle and cover for a gift last year. My grandaughter pulled on the kKindle and the hook that holds the Kindle in the cover snapped off. I went to overstock.com and got a really nice cover that the Kindle slips into for only $9.99 and no shipping. I love it so much better than the one Amazon sells. They also have the light very cheap too.

Covers are easy to find on ebay. I got a really nice one for about $16 last year w/ free shipping. Definitely get a book-like cover. That makes it feel more like reading an actual book. I personally do not feel a lighted cover is necessary (at least not for me). I do not read in the dark. I always have a light on in the room when reading. The screen is not backlit though so if you tend to read in a very dim or dark room, get a cover w/ a light or get a separate clip on book light.

My Husband just bought me the $79 one for my birthday last week and he bought me a leather cover along with it. The cover I feel is a must because it protects the kindle and screen.

I had a clip on light from a snuggie purchase we made on woot a while ago that worked perfectly with this cover.

My iPhone charger is one of those USB ones that can change the cord to the actual plug so the USB cord that came with my Kindle just plugs right in for charging. It's very convenient.

Another vote for pre-ordering. Kindles are very popular Christmas gifts so if you wait, it may be hard to find in the stores.

And you need a cover, especially if you will be taking it with you when you leave the house.

I got a Kindle cover and screen protector from Overstock, that I really like. Price was under $20 including shipping. I bought a cover at Target when I bought the Kindle for $35 and it broke in less than a week. I have had the one from Overstock since June and it still looks great.

I agree - pre-order. These are being released right before a holiday season and in the past, Amazon has sold out of Kindles at this time of year. You definitely need a cover.

I don't use a cover, but have a black zippered case from Belkin ($25) to hold it in for storing and transporting. It comes with a charging cord, so you don't need to buy one unless you lose it.

According to Amazon's website they're not being released until the 21st.

The Kindle Fire is being released the 15th, the Kindle touch is released the 21st.

I haven't heard any news on if or when they will be in stores.

They will be in stores and as far as I have heard they will be in on the 15th. I work for one of the retailers that will be carrying them and the only concern is how much inventory we are going to be able to get from Amazon. As of a week ago we still did not know.

If you are just going to use the Kindle around the house, you don't need a cover. If you plan on traveling with it at all (even just around town to read while waiting for things, doc's office etc.) then a cover is a must. I got a very nice one for $20 but you can probably find them for less. I already have a booklight for my "real" books and can just use that. The cord that came with my Kindle works fine, but I'm not sure what comes with the newer one so I couldn't say if you need something extra or not.

Just pre-ordered a Kindle Fire for my daughter for Christmas, because of this thread! I'd been thinking I'd get her one, but didn't think of them selling out.

Thanks for the advice.
