Kindle Questions?

I have the original kindle fire, and I LOVE IT...if anything every happens to it I will purchase a new one right away..Also love amazons customer service when I had a slight problem with my kindle..Sent me a new charger at no charge and that was the problem with it..

If you are looking for an extended warranty, we always do squaretrade warranties on our electronics, and they've been fabulous to work with. I bought it at the same time I bought my original Fire (both straight from Amazon), and despite having multiple charging issues with it, squaretrade has replaced it promptly each time with no problems. I swear by them :thumbsup2!

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but can anyone list the differences between the Nook and the Kindle? A few years ago I bought my niece a Nook (that's what she wanted). I'm thinking of getting one for myself, but was wondering what the pros/cons were for each. Or is it just personal preference?

I would stay away from the Nook. They probably won't be around in the next year or two and it sounds like Barnes and Noble may not be, either...so no support if something would happen.

I'd stick with a Kindle (or an iPad).

Learned something today. I had just gotten prescription sunglasses and found I couldn't see anything on my kindle in the sun. :-( so I searched the internet and found if you turn it landscape you can read again.

Just wanted to share this. the place I purchased my sunglasses from had no idea.

Still trying to think this through regarding a purchase. Will probably go Kindle, since B&N seems to be an issue now with the Nook. Just can't decide which one to get.

I think I would only use it to read books, most likely when traveling, to avoid carrying heavy books with me. So I would think the Kindle Paperwhite would be the choice (and less expensive).

But then I think, what if I want to surf the web or use it to watch a show, then maybe the Fire would be the better choice. But I really don't see me watching a lot of movies on it. I like a bigger screen if I'm going to be watching full length movies/shows. I just feel like I'm limiting my options if I just go with the paperwhite (and it looks like it's only a 6" screen).

Also, what it the difference between the Fire HD and the Fire HDX?

Sorry if I sound so confused. But that's because I am. Need help making up my mind.

Thanks!

The Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Fire are very different things. The Paperwhite is made for reading. Its screen is special so you won't get eyestrain from reading for long periods of time like you would with a computer screen like what you get with the Fire.

The biggest difference between the HD and the HDX is the screen resolution. The HDX will have crisper video.

I have a Paperwhite for reading and my husband is buying me a HDX for Christmas to use as a tablet mostly so I can take notes at meetings, play online games, surf the web, and check email.

I think the Paperwhite is so low priced compared to the Fire that since I'm a reader then if I was going to get the Fire I would get the Paperwhite with it for reading since compared to the Fire it isn't as much money. The eyestrain is a big worry for me.

My 16 yr old grandson has a Kindle fire HD 7 in, and has a 10 inch tablet HD ( Acer? can't remember) He said he likes reading books better on his 7 in Kindle than he does on the 10 in tablet.

I have an iPad mini which is backlit like the Kindle Fire and the Kindle Paperwhite which is e ink (much easier on the eyes).I really like them both for different reasons. For reading books the Paperwhite is great. There are a number of web sights that list free books for the Kindle and I haven't bought a book in ages.Another plus for the Paperwhite is that it has a much better battery life which comes in handy if you are traveling with it. The e ink also makes it much easier to read in the sun if that would be of importance to you.
I also use my ipad almost daily.Love it, and would not want to be without it. I guess it comes down to how you will be using it.For just reading I would go Paperwhite if not I would go HDX with the higher resolution because it should be a little easier on the eyes.

I feel the same way you do about the Kindle readers and tablets. I also have a kindle keyboard that I use for reading and would replace that only with a kindle Paperwhite. For pure reading, the Kindle readers are definitely kinder to my eyes than the tablets. I also have an Ipad and a Galaxy tablet to use for other things, but prefer the non-tablet readers for reading.

Still doing my research on this. I've looked at each in the store and read people's comments. I think I'm going to lean toward the Kindle Paperwhite. I really only see myself using it to read when I travel (and the "easy on the eyes" is a good thing. I have other tablets that I thought I would use when traveling for web-surfing etc. But now I use my iphone for that (one less thing to carry).

So now my question is: what's the difference between the Kindle Paperwhite with Wifi and the Paperwhite 3G? Also, I saw the Paperwhite with special ads, which is $50 cheaper. Does that one have a LOT of ads that pop up (that ill annoy me)? Or is it not too bad?

I liked having an e-reader with free 3G but didn't really use it much. I don't think it is hard to plan ahead enough to make sure I have enough to read while wifi is available to me. So while it is nice it isn't worth the extra money.

I have only seen the special offers when I put my Kindle to sleep, and in a small block at the bottom of the book lists. They aren't visible when I'm reading a book.

Thanks for your advice and comments. I ended my hold-out and bought the Kindle Paperwhite. I really think I'm just going to use it when I travel to read on the beach or by the pool, so the tablet version wasn't necessary.
Now to download some books and plan a trip!

I was in barnes and noble yesterday and they have their 9.8 inch HD+ tablet for $119. I bought one at Target a few weeks ago for that price. I love it because I can watch movies from Netflix, Google play, Hulu, Vudu, and even youtube or amazon. I also have the Kindle App on my Nook so I can still get mots of free books and have access to both of my libraries.

I spent yesterday on Jury duty watching movies and reading magazines on the nook.

Worth it to me!

Just an FYI on those wanting Kindles. Amazon Local has a coupon you can get sent to your Amazon account for 20% off certain refurbished Kindles. There are about 6-8 to choose from. I have the Kindle Fire and ended up getting my DD12 and my Dad the Kindle Fire 7" 8GB for $80 each. No tax and free shipping. With the coupon you can buy up to 3 Kindles. Thought this was a great deal. I didn't need alot of GB as my DD already has an Ipad and Dad will basically just be using it to read.

Great thread! :thumbsup2I'm going to hijack as well, sorry.:guilty::rolleyes1

I was just considering the same for my DS and DD. I was wavering between the Kindle Fire HDX 7" and Fire HD 8.9" since they are both $229. I think now I'll go with the HDX since the screen has better resolution, albeit smaller. Is 16GB enough storage for games, books, movies, and some schoolwork?

I also was thinking of getting DD(5) the Kindle Fire HD 7" for $139. Is 8GB enough space for games and movies? Or would you go with the 16GB for $169?
