Yes, they just made me turn it off during take-off and landing just like the other devices. It wasn't a big deal to me.

Slightly off topic, what is it about planes that you need to turn off the electronics during take-off and landing? What could devices bother?

I just ordered a Kindle and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. I assume you can use it while on board a plane. Is it like other "electronic devices" such that you turn it on and off as directed by flight attendants? I'm just curious because of the wireless download component.

Sandi....it's only a matter of minutes that the Kindle must be turned off during takeoff and landing. I use my Kindle regularly on airplanes. The only thing I found was that you can't download a book from the whispernet while flying. I finished a book and attempted to order a new one and found I couldn't. I wasn't sure if there was a problem with my Kindle or if it was being in the air. I attempted it, again, last week and sure enough, you can't download while in the air. Make sure you've got enough to read before you're airborne.

Click on menu and at the top it will say turn wireless on or off whatever the case may be. Just click that.
This is on the Kindle 2, not sure if the older version is the same.

Yes, you can use it on a plane.

When they say turn off wireless devices, you can turn off JUST the internet, and you can still read a book that's already downloaded. That's no different from listening to music that's already on your ipod or using word processing on your computer. What they care about when they say "turn off electronic devices" is that you're not sending/receiving signals electronically.

Depends on the FA as to whether or not you can read Kindles during take off/landing....

Last couple weeks I was on 5 different flights (domestic and international) and 3 out of 5 asked that I turn it off.

Kindle 1 has 2 switches on the back; one to turn on/off wireless, the other to turn on/off the Kindle.

You know it just MIGHT be helpful for amazon to include the turn off info in the instructions. I scoured mine to find that it isn't mentioned.

As for library lending of digital books, the format that our overdrive uses is Adobe digital management, which requires the downloading to your computer of Adobe digital editions (free of course). It is very easy to use and several other ebook websites use similar formats (fictionwise, bargin books if your getting the Adobe versions).

The kindle is very limited because it does not allow other formats (that I have yet seen) but I also haven't attempted to see if I could put an adobe pdf on it. The sony ereader supports its own format, pdfs, word docs, excel sheets, etc.. Thus I can scan things like medical records for work and then take it with me to court to read while waiting on my docket call if I want.

The Kindle 2 that I ordered supports .pdf format. I think that will be a useful feature for many things -- much easier to bring along a Kindle than a laptop.
