I just took the plunge and got a 3G+Wireless Kindle (the one with ads). It was $139.99 at Best Buy, but they included a free $30 BB giftcard in the purchase. I love it so far- have already downloded a bunch of books.

Here are my questions:

1-Since the battery life is so long, when you are not reading, do you keep it in "sleep" mode (with a screensaver up), or do you turn it off altogether?

2-And since I have the 3G, should I make the Kindle "forget" my wireless when I am at home so it doesn't automatically connect and possibly use up the battery faster?

Thanks, everyone!

Turning the wireless off will make the battery last much longer, so I usually have it off unless I am downloading books.

But I usually just let it go to sleep when at home, and charge it once a week, usually overnight, rather than turning it all the way off.

my 9 year old son has the kindle and i have the nook --- his battery life is alot longer on the kindle then my nook -- he never turns it off - it mostly goes into sleep mode -- he reads every day for atleast an hour if not more and he can get about a month out of his battery -- he also has the lighted cover and that draws from the batter alittle when he has it on
enjoy yours --- its addicting

I just let mine go to sleep with the screensaver and I keep the wireless off unless I am downloading a book. My battery lasts a really long time!

If it is possible to turn off the 3G radio and use wireless, then do that. Wi-fi alone uses less battery than 3G alone.

If I know I'm not going to be using it for awhile, I turn the Kindle off. Otherwise I let it go into "sleep" mode. This is something I read online and it helps to save the battery. :)

If I know I am not going to use my kindle for more than 12 hours, I turn it off. I always keep my wireless off until I purchase something. Leaving the wireless on will drain your battery a lot quicker.

I'm glad to hear you purchased one, it is a fantastic device. I have the same one, and I love it!

Welcome to the kindle world!!

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I am really loving playing around with my new Kindle- right now it is "sleeping" on the sofa. I have been reading a lot. I went ahead and turned off the Wireless- will only turn it back on when at home and downloading books from Amazon.

Another question I just thought of- if I order a Kindle book while I am on the computer, will it still transfer to my device right away? So far, I've only ordered directly from my device because I knew exactly what books I wanted, but I find just browsing is faster and easier when I am sitting at the desktop.

When you buy a book from the Kindle store while using your computer it will be delivered to your Kindle automatically. If you have the wireless turned off, it will download when you turn it back on

Hooray for another kindle user! I turn mine completely off when I'm done reading to save battery life. But I also leave the wifi on because I want the wifi-gods to be able to detect my stopping place because I often use by Kindle app on my iPhone. This way my two devices always sync to the same location in my book. I often find myself reading a couple of pages on my iPhone while waiting on the grocery line because it's so convenient :thumbsup2

I don't think that turning the kindle off is going to save that much battery, at least not because of the screen saver.

What I understand about e-ink is that it uses power only when the page is first "drawn". After that, the text or picture can stay on the screen and it (the display) uses no power.

Just what I've been told ...
