Kindle Fire vs Ipad mini

My daughter received a Kindle fire last year for xmas now she wants an ipad mini. Is it really worth it? Are they that much different?

No. Essentially, they both do the exact same thing. I'm pretty sure that your daughter just wants a new & fun electronic device.

They have different operating systems, but essentially are the same electronic device.

In all my research I have found most people prefer the Google Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 over the Fire or mini.

Personally, if your DD has a tablet I would say she doesn't need another one.

Depends what she'll use it for, IMO. If she's a heavy reader, then stick with the Kindle. The ipad or the ipad mini is great for web browsing, media, games, and many schools are using ipads for education.

How old is she? She may just want the ipad mini for the "cool" factor. Can't really blame her there, it's a sweet little device. Not cheap though.

Um no! Not even close to the same! It's like comparing a car to an airplane.

Kindle has No premium features (3G wireless, cameras, microphone, GPS, and location services are absent), but the biggest issues are its paltry storage (only 8GB of storage--with no expansion slot), lack of Bluetooth, and limited parental controls. Screen brightness could be better, and the app selection doesn't match Apple's or Google's (at least for now). Also, you'll need an Amazon Prime subscription to take advantage of some of the more-unique features.


iPad mini has superb resolution as well! My biggest thing is the kindle can't be locked (unless you turn wifi off) for buying apps. My daughter has spent money on apps by accident since she is 3.

Why the superb resolution comment? I know the newest IPad has the Retina display but I believe the Mini doesn't, which would mean that it's resolution would be comparable to others in it's class. Another thing to consider is the Kindle Fire is android based, so something like a Nexus 7 might be better since apps already purchased might be compatible.

However, she really doesn't need a new tablet.

Lots of adults who purchased the original Kindle Fir have since upgraded to an iPad. It may e the cool factor if by that you mean a tablet that functions well with quick response time. Other adults have upgraded to the Kindle Fire HD, which most agree s far superior to the original. -- Suzanne

Not true. I have my Kindle locked from buying Apps...for myself! I don't want to accidentially buy something without it asking for my password. And I never turn off the WiFi.


If she has the Kindle Fire I don't see much need for an iPad Mini at this point. Of course you can compare differences, but I am not sure that your daughter is even aware that there are differences. I'd ask her why she wants the iPad Mini. If she can't list several of the actually reasons then she only wants it for the 'cool' factor.

I can do everything I want, except for work stuff (and I have a laptop for that), on my Kindle Fire. Books, magazines, TV, movies, games, plenty of apps, a wonderful internet browser, fantastic beautiful screen, email, games...I could go on and on. I already have a camera, I already have a phone (with a camera), so for the price I see Kindle Fire as a STEAL and I'm a full grown adult. What else would a kid need?... I have no idea, but considering price and practicality to me it's a no-brainer.

I have both and yes the resolution isn't like the iPad. And how do you "lock" the kindle without wifi off??

Same here! I don't want to accidentally buy something either!

My son is getting an Ipad2. I talked to my techie brother who used to work for Apple, and he said that the Ipad2 is better than the mini. I was teetering between the two before asking for his opinion. I got a great deal on the apple.com website on a white refurbished one.

We bought 2 of our daughters kindle fire last Christmas, and our 3rd daughter a nook color.
They love the kindle fire. No real issues with them. They are able to download music on both, watch movies, read books and magazines, and play thousands if games thru apps.
The color and resolution are fine.
I got the new iPad. They do a lot of the same things the kindle and nook do. The sound, color and resolution do not compare to the kindle or nook.

However, having said this, if my kids ( who already have the kindles and nook) asked for an iPad this year, I would not buy it for them. They are too much alike, just one is more expensive and a bit better. But, overall, they do pretty much the same thing.
