Kindle Fire tips and tricks

Just got my DS11 one and I have no idea how to use it. Any tips on how to get cheap books for it? Does it work like and android?

go to the app store and look for 'free kindle books' there are many apps.... download it and click away- another option is just go to amazon to the kindle section and look for books by price from low-high- using the free app I get about 3-4 free books daily to read......

Thanks for the info we just purchased this for our DD15. Need to figure it out. Basic instructions are a brown card on how to login nothing else.

Public library digital loaning library. Amazon makes the download to the Kindle very easy and seamless. If you're an Amazon Prime member, you can also borrow one free book every month from the members' loaning library. Many current bestsellers are included and you don't have to go on a waiting list to get what you want.

I gave my 8 year old one for her birthday and she picked it up and just started using it. Amazing what kids can just figure out!

I had pre-loaded some free apps from the Amazon App store for her. They also have a free app of the day, everyday. Tons of free books from Amazon too. I check out these two web sites - TONS of free books posted every day. Some hits, some misses, but all free so it's all good!

Thanks to all of you who have posted links and advice. We got DD a Kindle Fire for Christmas but we haven't put a whole lot on it yet. I was hoping to add some new stuff before our Disney trip so she would have some new things to do and read during the drive.

I do have one bit of advice - something we learned the hard way. One of the first things that DD wanted to purchase was the Selena Gomez movie, Monte Carlo. I tried to talk her into getting the dvd because the cost for the download was about the same as just buying the dvd. But she really wanted to watch it on the Kindle Fire. So we got it that way. Well, she just tried to watch it again recently and it's not available for viewing anymore. The only explanation I could find was that Amazon's licensing agreement doesn't allow them to sell or allow viewing of the movie download anymore. So I guess we're just out the $15 we paid for it. I hadn't realized at the time that it only appeared in the "cloud" and not on the device. Rookie mistake I guess. Now I've got to figure out how you can tell if the download is going to the device or just to the cloud BEFORE you purchase it.

I broke down and got the Amazon membership (like $80 or something for the year).

I can "borrow" one book a month from the lending library (lots of new books, like Hunger Games, new Game of Thrones, etc). Lots of free books, but be careful--sometimes the authors will use a title of a popular book for their own "self-published" one---so you think you are getting Shade of Grey when it's really about a housewife who eats her weight in cheese each day.

Free app every day, but make sure to check reviews. There is one for a gin rummy game (or something similar) that has "soft porn" ads (per the reviewers) that pop up in the game. They also have the games where you can purchase "upgrades" and that can be very bad if you have the one touch buy turned on (or if you have a kid that doesn't get that you are paying real life money for an extra box of wood)!

(Angry Birds, The Moron Test--ooh, Cut The Rope and Plants vs Zombies; Stupid Zombies is fun too)

If you have the prime membership thing, you can get tons movies and shows for free also. (and free shipping--woot!) My son likes to watch Mythbusters and some kids shows when we're out shopping (my husband has some hotspot thing on his phone, that turns it into wifi).

You can get music too, but I haven't done so yet--I just listen to the radio!

You can choose to download it to the device or on your computer. From your computer, log in to your Amazon.com account and you can find your digital content and download it there. When your Fire is on Wifi, go to the movies section and you can choose to download it to the device.

You will be able to do this now as your $15 purchased a license to own the movie.

Not sure about other versions of Kindle, but on the Fire, just keep your finger on the book/app/whatever you want to delete. A pull-down menu will appear; I believe "remove from carousel" and "remove from device" are your choices.

On my "regular" Kindle which has the keyboard, when you have the item on your list highlighted, use the left arrow and it will say something like "delete from device" or "remove from device".

I only have my Fire with me at the moment, so I can't look at my regular one to give you better instructions, so hopefully that makes sense.

You an also log into your kindle account and go the "manage my kindle link" . Going here will allow you delete from your cloud, having a 100% removal form your device. I have had to do this when I bought some free books that looked to be a gentle romance and were very pornagraphic in nature.

I put DVDs that I own onto my Kindle Fire using these steps...

It takes a bit of time and the sound isn't always 100% but it's still pretty good.

I got the free kindle book app but how can I just see young reader books? Some of the titles that came up were much too mature for my ds11. Can I block such adult titles from his kindle?

We just got a kindle fire in May. Thus far I just add books for dd12 though we've found that some of the free kindle books app lists books under the children category that are fine for her age.

Oh for younger kids on the kindle fire - my dd7 likes the istorybooks app and you can add even more free books to it. I think it says ages 2-8. There is also ihistory books but I think it cost 99cents. These are apps vs ebooks and the kindle fire can read them aloud.
