Kindle Fire HD vs Nook Color

I was going to purchase the kindle fire hd for my 8yo dgs but now his mom is asking about the nook color because she has a nook and they could share the account. What are the pros and cons of each? TIA

Are you looking at the Nook Color or one of the newer Nook Tablet Devices?

The Nook Color doesn't exist anymore. It's the Nook Tablet (they also come with an HD model that just came out very recently) so a search wouldn't really help you too much.

Honestly, it's probably apples to apples, though I haven't looked into either. If it were me, I would get a Nook because I already have the Nook simple e-reader (which is AWESOME btw) so I could have one account.

Go for the Kindle Fire HD. That's what my DD is getting for her birthday. I have a Kindle Touch and love it. Amazon has so many free books to download too. Plus there's the Amazon App Store too.

I had a Nook Color and now have a Kindle Fire. For a kid, I would get the Fire. There aren't very many apps at all for the Nook. I loved reading on my Nook, but the Fire has so many more games, etc. to use. A lot of free ones too. The Nook didn't have many free apps. I had to pay for Angry Birds for example.

Actually, you can still get the Nook Color some places. I would agree, though, that the Nook does not have as many apps available. I rooted mine to an android tablet and had a lot more choices, but then you would have to take the memory card in and out to share the Nook account.

I have both a kindle and a nook, get the Kindle over the Nook, Nook has few apps,and you're limited to buying books from Barnes and Noble on it.
Kindles have an almost unlimited supply of free books you can get EVERY DAY. Seriously, 100's every day. If I could go back in time and re-choose a tablet it would be a Kindle for this reason.
Amazon has won big time with the free content for Kindles, the Nook is a pale comparison.
( i currently use a Nook color with a 'root' sd card installed so I can use it like a kindle. funny,huh?)
Now if you are buying books for the reader the prices are about the same, but B&N has very few for free. Amazon has hundreds daily.
If you're buying for dgs to just READ on, I suggest a kindle with paper like screen and glow background, hands down,the simplest most elegant way to read books,IMHO. My ds has a simple Kindle reader(no light) and he reads more now than he ever did previously.

Both are very nice but I think I would listen and take in to account what the mom of this child prefers. Maybe she doesn't want an Amazon acct. for her 8 yr old and would prefer they share her Barnes and Noble acct. I think that it would be best to sit down and talk with the mom and go with her wishes regardless of which device others prefer.

I agree. It might be best to get the one that the parent thinks is best.

I have a Nook Tablet and my friend has a Kindle Fire - they're both nice, have lots of free apps and you can get lots of free books as well as buy books from other sources.

The bolded is not true at all. The Nook will handle more formats than any Kindle except the DS, and you can buy them where ever you want, or borrow them.

I also have both, and I prefer the Nook interface for ease of use. DD5 uses both devices with ease, but she needs help more often with the Kindle. The Kindle does have more free game apps available for kids, but the Nook works better as a read-and-listen device for kids who like books with audio narration. There are pluses to both interfaces, and it is more a matter of preference than anything else.

For $159 the Kindle Fire is a STEAL. Amazon vs B&N, with or without Amazon prime...well it was a no brainer for me, but I'd suggest you can research that on the internet and reach your own conclusions.
The KF does everything I need, except work stuff, so I can't imagine a kid not liking it. Then, again...hah! good luck, you're on your own with that one!!
