Who's going to get one? Who is sticking with their Kindle 1 or 2? Who wouldn't ever buy one no matter what??:rotfl:

I was going to order a Kindle 2 for DD20 - I have a Kindle 1 I passed down to DD15 and I have a Kindle 2 for myself. DD20 wanted one for her birthday this year, so I may order the Kindle DX and see which version really suits which family member best. I love the idea of textbooks on the Kindle but DD20 is going to be a senior in college this fall and is a Literature major so most of the "texts" she still needs would be novels that could be easily read on a K1 or a K2.

I might like the Kindle DX for myself because I would enjoy the better graphics it would provide for newspaper and magazine reading. Of course if it ever were in color I would be thrilled!!!

I think the price is fair for the increased size but it's pretty expesnive - under $400 is my "sweet spot" for electronics so this pushes my envelope a little. On the other hand, if textbooks for my younger daughter can be purchased for a significant savings it would pay for itself over time.

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

The DX is just so much bigger, I love the way my K2 fits in my purse (yes, I carry a pretty big purse). We are going to wait for now.

I just got a 2 for my bday, DH has a 1. I love how small and portable my 2 is, the DX is way too big and expensive for me. However, Amazon must have received enough feedback to warrant this bigger size. Nice to have a choice...

Right now I'll stick with my K2. It fits in my purse and is just the right size for what I need it for. I start school again in the fall. If the majority of my required textbooks are available for the DX (and at a reduced pricepoint) I'll take a look then.

Too big! I'll stick with my nice portable Kindle 2 in it's gorgeous purple Oberon leather case. :goodvibes

:rotfl:I couldn't make up my mind between the blue and the green M Edge cover for the K2 so I ordered both thinking I would give one of them to DD20 with her new birthday Kindle 2. Now if I get a DX I'll just have to change the cover on the 2 more often and enjoy both of them (hmm, wonder if there are books I would like better if I read them in the blue cover or the green cover?):rotfl:

I don't get this, are you supposed to spend $350 on each version that comes out?!?

Actually, the DX is $489.00 (I could have sworn that, this morning, it was $459.00). And the answer is 'yes'.

   :faint:

Wow! Of course, I'm the same cheapie who also didn't shell out for any of the iPods at $400 each. I waited (years) for the cheap, generic MP3 players to come down to $50. Having portable music, I'm not that into. But, I'd really love an eReader of some kind for the bigger fonts. <sigh!>

Buy a used Kindle 1 from Amazon or Ebay for a couple of hundred bucks. You'll still have access to the wireless Whispernet, the Amazon library, the ease of downloading, and the selection of font sizes, but you won't be paying a premium to upgrade to the latest incarnation...:rolleyes1like some of us will!

I'm totally drooling over the DX!!!

I want one!

My Kindle 1 is getting a *little* bit old now.... :rolleyes1

Some will; I think the DX is aimed at a different market than the K1 or K2. I wouldn't be surprised if eventually Amazon had different versions at different price points (like Ipods) so people could pick the one that best suits their lifestyle. I'm just happy the Kindle seems to be doing so well, hopefully it'll convince more publishers to make more books available.

I love, love, love my Oberon cover. It's the Raven in Navy and every time I pick it up, it makes me happy.

I just ordered a couple of books from Amazon 2 hours ago. I didn't even SEE a Kindle DX. Maybe that's because they are still TRYING to talk me into the Kindle 2. I'm trying to hold out on the price. But OMG i want it. An Ipod I'd lose or forget about but the Kindle we'd be using all the time. DH and I love books.

Why oh WHY didn't Amazon offer a discount for previous Kindle purchasers like they did for the Kindle 2?

:sad1:

To quote The Nerdist, why not just spend $500 and get a netbook with wifi? This seems a little unnecessary/

Amazon didn't offer any discounts for Kindle 2 purchases. They did reduce the price of the Kindle 1 on two occasions that I recall - once there was an email offering a 5% discount and once there was the $50 off offer from Oprah. But there was no discount offer to purchase a KIndle 2 if you had previously purchased a Kindle 1, at least not that I remember. I do remember a lot of people complaining because they thought one SHOULD have been offered.

Because the reading experience is completely different. A netbook - or any computer screen - has a backlight, whcih makes it difficult for many people (myself included) to read for extended periods without eyestrain. For example, I can read on my Iphone using the Kindle app for about 30 minutes and then I get a blurry vision for another hour or so. With the E-ink technology used by Kindle, there is no eyestrain because there is no backlight. The screen is opaque so light won't shine through it. Because you are using an external light source (including bright sunlight, which certainly isn't true of a netbook) you don't have any eyestrain. It's meant to (and does, in my opinion) mimic a regular page of print. I can read all day on a Kindle just like I can on a regular paper book without any eye problems at all.

Hey Liz, I wondered when someone would post about this! I just ordered another $100 Amazon gift card from my bank (enough points accrued) so I went on the site bto see how many of the books on my wish list it would buy when I saw the DX. Personally, it's too big for me. As others mentioned mine fits perfectly in my handbag, and also in the side pocket on the door of my SUV. Plus, it's heavy enough, I imagine that the DX weighs a little more. I did take your advice from other posts and purchase the M-Edge Prodigy (mine is green leather), and I can honestly say that I am happy as a clam with things as they are!

Hi fellow Kindler!! I do love that M Edge cover - I have the turquoise-y blue one right now but I got that green one too and I may switch it up this week.

In looking at the new features, I don't know if they would be enough to get me to buy one right now. Although I think it's cool that they can auto rotate, it's not a feature I really need. The extra memory is great, but mine will hold 1500 books as is, and I'm a big "send it back to Amazon after I've finished reading it" type anyway. The larger screen is a great new feature, but I read mostly fiction and memoirs, not graphic heavy material, so really not that much of an improvement for me. Native PDF reader? Great for those who need it!! And I was really excited to see that!! Until I thought, "Hey, you don't put ANY documents on your Kindle because there's nothing you need to read like that in your everyday life!" LOL! So, while all those features are cool, I think I'm sticking with K2 for now.

If the Kindle DX had a color screen, though - I would be all over it and hope they would then offer many more magazines. If they had all the magazines I like and were able to feature them in the big screen format with color, I would be thrilled. And if you could copy an article and save it on your computer along with the pictures in that article, that would be awesome. That's the improvement I'm waiting for!!!

I bought the Kindle 1 on the second day it was offered. I bought the new Kindle 2 on the first day.

Kindle DX: I have no interest. Why? It is not 'new' with improvements, simply a 'larger' Kindle 2 with a bigger screen.

I don't have a Kindle but I really want one! I'm looking forward to everyone's feedback on different versions.

I have soooooo many books, we have nowhere to store them. I'm thinking I need to be more discerning as to which ones I buy in actual book form. I want to read the Sookie Stackhouse books and just saw how many there are. So, I really think it's time for a Kindle. My B'day is in August!;)
