Kinda confusing question

Ok here goes....Can you borrow from 2012 points for a 2011 reservation but, in a 2010 UY? Told ya it's confusing...

To start my UY is August.

In January 2011 I want to make a reservation for Dec 2011. I will still be in my 2010 UY. All my 2010 points are gone and all but, 30 of 2011 are gone. My question is can I borrow from my 2012 points to secure the December reservation? I don't know if it can be done because technically I will still be in my 2010 UY when I call....

Now you have me confused, I think you can. It does not matter when you call it matters when you use the points.

And you will be using the points for a 2011 trip based on your use year, so you should be able to borrow 2012 points into that year.

My use year is October and it drives me crazy too as we hardly ever take trips in Oct, Nov or Dec.

This makes sense to me, but I was not going to attempt to answer. LOL I wonder if OP will have to wait until Aug. 1st of 2011 to make the ressie for Dec. 11 trip though since she wants to borrow 2012 points. I think OP should just call MS.

I really think you can - you can borrow UY 12 to use in UY 11. I am pretty sure but just call DVC and check with them. I am sure you can though.

Yes you can. The important thing is the dates of the trip, not the dates of the booking. So your trip is in your 2011 use year, so you could use banked points from 2010 or borrowed from 2012. The date you make the reservation doesn't matter.

We go through this a lot with a Dec UY.....we are actually always in the prior UY (from the current calendar year) when it comes to points......

You can NOT borrow 2012 points for a 2010 trip...

that being said, it goes by when your trip is and not when you call....

Since your trip is Dec. 2011 and you will be in your 2011 UY, yes you can borrow your 2012 points for that trip!

Remember, it is when your traveling and not when you are calling...

Yes, you can do what you are asking.

My UY is June, in May 2008 booked a DCL for Sep 2009 including borrowing points from June 2010.

OP - all of the answers were confusing because I think your original post was not that clear - but I think arthur summed it up well.

1 - you don't need current year points available in your account when you call to make a reservation;
2 - you just need points available in the year you are booking for

So - your specific situation:
You have an August use year (me too) - which means each year's points are valid for STAYS from August 1, 20xx to July 31, 20xx. So 2011 points are good from August 1, 2011 - July 31, 2012.

You want to book a trip for the month of December 2011. That falls into your August 2011 use year as stated above. For that trip, you can use 3 kinds of points:

• 2010 points that you banked into 2011 (you have none of these)
• 2011 points (you have 30 of these)
• 2012 points that you have borrowed into your 2011 use year (you have all your points for this)

You will call -- 11 months out and:
1) Borrow xx points from 2012 to 2011 (however many you need for your reservation minus 30 because you already have those available)
2) Make the reservation for December 2011.

As long as you are in the booking window, you can book.

And if booking requires that you borrow and you have points in the appropriate UY for the trip you're booking, you can do that.

In January '11, you're allowed to book for December '11.

To book your trip, you can use banked points that are valid at the time of the reservation, the current-at-that-time UY's points, and borrowed points that end up being valid at the time of the reservation.



I ended up booking later, because we didn't realize we wanted to try for our home resort, but this is what I *could have done*.

I have a Feb UY. In Jan '10 it was my '09 Use Year (until the end of the month). I wanted to book our Dec '10 trip.

I had previously banked some of the '09 UY points into '10 UY.

I had '10 UY points to use.

I also was going to borrow from the '11 UY points for our trip in December '10.

So I could have booked in '09 UY (though actually 2010 year-year LOL) for '10 UY with '11 UY points.

Same as you, just a year earlier.


Don't confuse yourself with "real" year vs UY. If you're in your booking window, you're good, as long as you're only banking one UY ahead or borrowing one UY, um, behind.

If you are within the 11 booking window to make the reservation, you can borrow the points from the next use year if needed, no matter when when you call to make the reservation.

The reservation is for December, 2011, which is in your 2011 UY. You can therefore borrow as needed from your 2012 UY to complete the reservation. Remember, it's not when you make the reservation. Rather, it's what date the reservation is for.
