Kind of worried my husband lost his job yesterday.

Wait, who is taking a trip to Disney that's worth a MONTH of expenses?

The quote we got for next year's trip was $6,584.27 (That's without airfare; I'll book our flights in December.)

I don't know whether it's exactly a month's expenses, but it's probably close. Our credit cards are paid off-- we pay for our mortgage, gas for the cars, food and utilities.

Of course, I'm hoping and praying for a massive discount or a PIN. But I can easily see how the cost of a WDW trip would make a real difference in your standard of living if you were suddenly down to one salary. I know that during my SAHM years, there's no way we could have considered a trip.

Actually... I have to wholeheartedly disagree with that. The median (not the average) household income for 2011 was just about $50k. That means 1/2 of the population's households (all the people's salaries added together) make $50k or less per year.

For one out of every two people in the US, $50k is a LOT of money. A tremendous amount of money. I can remember when we moved up above that mark and it was the difference between taking any vacation or not. Buying something "because" instead of because we needed. Being able to have savings in the bank.

This is especially true for college grads. Avg (not median) starting salary is $44k; $36k for humanities, $60k for engineers. And when you consider that most of those people (regardless of field of study) leave with at least some debt... for a college grad to start at $50k would be exceptional.

All of the OPs choices are going to be determined by how she/they fit into these demographics. Do they have money saved to get by anyway? Is it a field without much competition that they don't have to worry about it taking 8-12 months to find a job?

Being an adult means making decisions and living with the consequences (I learned that from "Pacific Rim" last night). We do what we feel is right at the time.

50 grand doesn't cut it in most places. The poster ( not the op) seems to be bragging when in reality it isn't a huge amount for the so called fortune company that wasn't even mentioned.

50K would be plenty to live comfortably in this area. Oh, you couldn't buy a house with just that or an expensive car but for starting out that's pretty good.

All of you going on about negotiating salary and benefits don't even know what kind of work the OP's DH does. He could be any type of worker and of course not every type of employer negotiates with potential employees.

I know a lot of college grads who would JUMP at the chance to make $50K. My niece, for example, who is freelancing in her field as she works the front desk in a hotel to pay the rent.

Wait, who is taking a trip to Disney that's worth a MONTH of expenses?

Well, I don't know their expense but every trip that we have ever taken to the world has been several thousand dollars and that would cover a lot of our expenses for the month. I do not know the first thing about the OP or her finances, but i was just saying that is what I would do in this situation.

This is what she quoted as the cost of her trip. I think that $3762.79 could pay a few expenses.

This banter is probably not helping the OP at all. I am sorry that I even posted in this thread. :(

:lmao: unsubscribe, I do agree with you and the OP is probably skipping merrily along all over the Dis boards having moved on to other things while everyone here gives advice & opinions, that's fine I did it too but bottom line is they know their finances they know the job market they know what he is qualified to do
and We Do Not

IN the spirit of helping the OP, can I repeat my question?

What field of work is her husband in? What education does he have? What's his work background? DOes he have any hobbies that could translate into a job?

If we could help him find a job, this thread would be moot.

That's actually her 2014 trip!! If you look at the thread, it was for people just booking for next year. That's why I said skip the 2013 trip and just stick with this one!

Oops! I didn't catch that. Your advice is great then! Skip this one and go next year when things are better. We had to do the same thing last year for other reasons and it didn't kill us. :rotfl:

and just when I thought there wasnt any caring people left.. ::yes::

OP you have some time to make the decision, like a month and a half, a lot can change.. I pray that it does.. Let us know how things turn out!

Me either. Sorry to the previous poster but I go in and if offered the job, I tell the person straight out I have a totally paid for vacation that I cannot cancel and I'm willing to take unpaid leave for that time. Both times, I've not only been given the time off but been completely paid for it. If you are good enough to be offered a job, you are good enough to be treated just like a real employee because that's what you are.

You both have been very lucky. I used to be in a management role over entry level employees. If one told us he had a vacation starting and could not be there for training, they would not be hired. Now at my level at my old job...there are exceptions made and understanding bosses...but at my new job which is even more senior...if it was during our busy season (November through March) the vacation would not be approved anyway...even Xmas week...(yes the devil does wear Prada.)

To the OP's hubby...For interviews, I would phrase it very carefully...you do not want to miss out on a new career, or also be out of the money. You are in a precarious situation and I will you luck...

Well the OP may very well have already made up her mind on this trip since she has been posting today about how excited she is about her MNSSHP tickets arriving and asking about wearing flotation devices at Shark Reef.:confused3 So maybe this whole thread is (as a PP stated) moot.

I was also surprised to know a company that won't give someone a vacation right away is a bad company to work for... to me that idea is ridiculous.

I just wanted to comment on this one. To me, an employer who isn't willing to negotiate when it comes to preexisting plans is an employer who is just looking for a warm body in the seat- and they don't care if that warm body is you, or the next Joe they interview.

It's the same reason that I would never work for an organization where I felt that my job would be in jeopardy if I took a maternity leave without FMLA protection. If you have to worry about a company giving your position the axe simply because you took time off after a major medical event to bond with your new child, it's not the type of company that values their employees' well-being.

It just sounds like you are tooting your own horn, and btw 50 grand in this day and age isn't a lot, even for college grads starting, and no paid vacation the first year? Your company needs to get over itself.

I agree. I made more than 50k plus all those benefits stated right out of college a few years back. Even my sometimes on again fiance said he made over 50k starting in 1999 out of college. And a signing bonus.

Wait, who is taking a trip to Disney that's worth a MONTH of expenses?

Just skimmed through this thread, but had to comment that reading the thread on the resort boards about people spending 6K on Disney trips, that would last a lot of people (me) almost 3 months!
