Kind of a silly question...

I am tracing my ancestors. I am trying to document them using a genealogy package, but I'm having a little difficulty. The package only has fields for city, county, state and country. For my ancestors from the UK, I don't know which fields to use. For instance, part of my family came from Breage, Cornwall, England. Is Breage the same as a city? Cornwall a county or state? I hope this isn't to silly a question.

I'd use Breage in the city field, Cornwall in the County, England for the State and UK for Country.

Looking at a map, Breage is a village. (A village is smaller than a town which in turn is smaller than a city.)

Cornwall is indeed a county.

We don't have states in the UK but consider the four main parts of the UK as countries. (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.) So I don't know how that fits into your package.

I think you will have to decide how you want to use the fields and stick with it for future addresses.

(I know I've had real fun filling in my address on US websites in the past.)

Not sure what software you are using, but I have used "Family Historian 3" in the past. It is easy to use and offers lots of useful tools for building your family trees. It is also 100% GEDCOM compatible.

Although its UK software I'm sure it would be available in the US.

Thank you for your help! I am using Master Genealogist to record my findings. It turns out that every branch of my family originated from the UK. No wonder I have such a great family. We come from terrific stock!

I have ancestors who came from Tor Point but have had no luck so far finding any in depth info on them, good hard strong working stock came from Cornwall. I think they may have been "relocated" by the Church of England to reduce claims on the Poor Relief. They tried to send the fit and able bodied to other counties and towns to find employment. My ancestor became a miner but not sure he was always a coal miner he could have been a tin or silver miner at some point too.
It explains my passion for Cornish pasties Nan used to make them with meat and veg in one end and fruit in the other but the crusts were meant for the pit ponies
I have found http://www.familysearch.org to be very useful but it helps to know where your ancestors were located to find out more about them on this site.
