HEY EVERYBODY!!!
I did it.....my FIRST 5K race!! MAN, what a good feelling!
Before I tell you about it...I gotta say a HUGE thank you to you guys. You got me out there & going today. If it weren't for you, I might have backed out this morning....
So my morning started at 6:15am, woke up, got cleaned up and dressed and my stomach was NOT happy. I know that I usually stress before a trip and add this 5K to that....it was not good. My stomach issues had me VERY worried that I might not be able to run today. (ok, I'm gonna assume you all know what I'm talking about and I won't keep talking about it!

). My mom came to pick me up (she was going with me to cheer me on) around 7:15 and we went on our way. I got checked in (#521), got my tshirt and went out where all the action was. There were a TON of people!! I think the highest number I saw was in the 900's somewhere!! The weather was awesome, not too hot, but warm. At about 8:20 they called us all to line up and then called out some runners names to clear up some numbering issues or something. Then at 8:30 we were off. I started my watch's timer and went on my way. It was extremely crowded for the first minute and I didn't go any faster than a slow walk (I was probably in the front 1/2 of the group). But after a minute we were all moving into more of a good pace. I know that I went that first mile a lot faster than I am used to. [my only gripe of the day is that they did not have the miles marked so I didn't know where to check my times] The course was through the streets of Ocean City and at the halfway point you go around a block and then go back the way you came. So it was a little discouraging to see those professional runners breeze past at a sprints pace when I haven't even hit the 1/2 way mark....but it was ok. When I was in their shoes (heading back) it felt really good to see how many people were behind me. I know that sounds awful, but when I run sometimes I really think I'm out of my league. This helped me realize that I'm not.
Anyway, heading back was a great feeling and there were a lot of people cheering as we got closer and closer to the track at OC high school where the finish line was. The last leg of the race was one lap around the track and let me tell you, I got extremely emotional there. I don't know what it was about running on a high school track, but it hit me hard. I think it's because I was the farthest thing from a runner back then. I was the cheerleader type, naturally skinny, no effort put out, no other physical activity done. And now, I feel like I'm coming into my own. (Geez, what a sidebar, huh?)
I picked up the pace like you wouldn't believe going around that track and felt awesome. My mom was on the bleachers right by the finish line and I hear this little "GO, KIM" as I'm scanning the crowd looking for her

. I finished in 32.16!!!
Whew, bet you didn't think my recap would be this long, huh? To wrap this up, it was AWESOME. Yes I was winded in the middle of the race from starting out too fast, but I kept on running. I thought about walking, but I didn't. I want to say I ran the whole thing, and I did. And I never had one tiny little stomach issue once I started.
With this race behind me, I SO look forward to this Florida trip. I can't wait to relive this feeling over and over in my mind, and to start to prepare for the 10K in October.
Thanks again, to ALL OF YOU WISHers!! I couldn't have done this without you! Have a GREAT week!!!
