Read about Kimkins program in Womans World magazine. It costs 60.00 to join and is a low carb program. Seems very successful. I am starting tomorrow and would love to find some DIS buddies to go through this with me. I am a 35 year old full time social worker, mother and college student and a disney planning nut. Planning a 9 day trip in October and want to lose at least 40 pounds before the trip. I have a real problem with exercise, it seems like I never have the time, but is really just an excuse, I am on the computer everynight looking at the DIS boards so I could be EXERCISING ! It's time to stop all the excuses and JUST DO IT !!

Hi there! I just wanted to say that I have been a member of Kimkins since before she started her site. I was introduce to her plan on another board & signed up with Kim when it only cost $14.95-a real bargin.

Just wanted to say hi & good luck. Kimmer & everyone there--all awesome. Seek out the advice of Becky (Littlebit) and Diane on the Camp Kimkins thread under challenges. Kimkins works if you stick to it. You will love the decreased appetite you get when you get into deep ketosis.

You may want to check out these threads before paying out:

I hope people don't mind if I start a thread for "Kimmer" questions. It will be easier for me to keep them together and can be a reference for often asked questions. Sometimes I don't go back to threads and miss extra questions after my last post.

So, if anyone wants to ask about Kimkins, water fasting, starvation mode or Fitday menus, please do!

Here's a link to my Fitday during my weight loss phase:

Kimmer's Fitday

Here's the guidelines for Kimkins:
  • Up to 20 total carbs (not 'net')
  • Up to 3 cups salad type veggies or
  • Up to 2 cups salad veggies + .5 cup 'cooked'
  • 70-90 lean protein grams
  • No LC products, treats, junk or alcohol
  • Just enough fat to make your menu work (don't overdo)

Here's the guidelines for the Kimmer Experiment (not M/E):
  • As much lean protein as you desire
  • Length of time is 3-5 days depending on how 'carbed up' you are
  • Purpose is to experience 'real' ketosis (weight loss, no appetite)
  • Useful as a springboard for other LC programs
  • No alcohol, no cheese
  • Basic condiments and spices OK (watch catsup & A1 sauce)

It's pretty much just Stillman's (think low-fat, low-cal Atkins) - she didn't create anything new (and as per the first two threads I linked, there's a lot of controversy about 'Kimmer' - Heidi Diaz - herself and her testimonials, including her own pictures).

Who is Heidi Diaz?

It seems like the only controversy is taking place at the Active Low-Carber Forums.

Whatever. Her plan works if you follow it. I lost weight right along with several of the people she features as success stories. I "chatted" with them daily. Maybe some are fake, who knows. But some are definitely real. Do what Kimmer says & you WILL lose.

Yeah, you can get the info for free at LCF, but you won't get the other things, like Kimmer's personal help or the benefit of others who have been successful.

I will say that I am glad I joined when it was only $14.95!

Heidi Diaz is Kimmer.

And I never disputed that 'her' plan will work. It's just a PSMF (protein-sparing modified fast) - pretty much the same thing that gastric bypass patients are put on after surgery. Low-fat, low-cal, low-carb.

Okay, glad you don't dispute that it works. I will have to dispute it being a "protein-sparing modified fast," though. According to http://www.drblythe.com/weightloss/tblcontents.htm

In the PSMF no carbohydrates are eaten at all. This means that the diet is limited to meat, cheese, egg, fish, and fowl. Cream, oil, and butter are OK, but there's not much to put them on! Six hundred to eight hundred calories per day of protein are consumed - that is about 150 to 200 grams of protein.

With Kimkins, you do eat carbs. With Kimkins you do NOT eat 150-200 grams of protein. As a matter of fact, she recommends keeping your protein much lower than that. Cream, oil, & butter are not "ok" for Kimkins. She enourages "just enough" fat to make the plan work.

There are varying versions of PSMFs. The one quoted above sounds pretty liberal in terms of fat - in fact, it sounds far more like a M/E diet than a PSMF.

Kimkins is another (far more traditional) version of PSMFing - low-cal, low-fat and low-carb. The only difference I see it having with the likes of the PSMF that Lyle McDonald talks about is that she doesn't tell you to eat a specific amount of protein. Other than that, it's pretty much the same thing.

ETA: I don't see PSMFing as a bad thing - it's probably the best way to go if you want to rapidly lose fat and you have the discipline for it. The only thing that really bothers me is that Kimmer has no real medical training and some of her testimonials (and her own pictures) are a bit suspicious - not all of them, but some of them. That said, I have no problem believing the rapid weight loss that people report.

Actually, she does give guidelines for protein. As far as no medical training, she is very upfront about that. I don't know which of her testimonials you find "suspicious," so it is hard to respond to that.

I get it that some people seem to have a beef with her--she had/has her fair share over on the LCF forums--I just don't get why. Live & let live, I say. She isn't harming anyone, so why get your panties in a bunch? (by that I don't mean YOU, VSL, I mean you as in anyone who gets upset by such menial things)

Yes, I apologise - she does give a good rough guideline for protein consumption (Lyle's guidelines are very specific though - like 1.5kg of protein for every kg you weigh if you are overweight, etc.).

The suspicious testimonials have been removed from her website, but they're mentioned in the two links to ALC forums above, along with the pictures of Kimmer herself.

Yeah, I checked out Lyle's site & forum. Rough bunch there.

ITA!

I'm registered there and there's some pretty useful info there, but I will never post! I don't mind debate, but that place is a bit too much for me.

So, can you tell me the success you have had with it?

Is ketosis really healthy?

Dawn

I successfully lost 48 pounds, but didn't keep it off. Like any other diet plan, you can't just STOP and go backto your old way of eating--the way that got you overweight to begin with.

To give you an idea of typical loss:
On September 27, 2006 I weighed 190. By October 31st, I weighed 171. And I am not the fastest loser, lol.

As far as ketosis being safe, I can't really answer that. I am not a doctor. I have never researched it. I can only say that nothing bad has ever happened to me while in ketosis. The good thing that happens is natural appetite suppression. Gotta love that.

I love Kimkins. It works. http://www.kimkins.com?a_aid=26fefdc3
