Kids taking their own Backpack or Bag?

We have four girls with us, 7, 6 and two four year olds.

They have Autograph books and pens we have made and can't decide whether to get them backpacks for these or messenger bags or just realize they are not going to carry them at all, and I will be carrying them.

I think Fanny pack would be too small.

My DD carries her autograph book, pen, and pin lanyard (which she likes to put on only during trading). It has been the perfect size for her. Since she was tiny, she used a fanny pack. The added benefit I have found that if she gets sick of wearing it, I can clip it to my bag and so it doesn't feel so much like something "extra" to carry.

I usually keep these in my purse for the kids. It's just easier! My kids are quite young (the eldest just turned 6) and I worry that if they lose an autograph book we'll have lots of tears. I let them hold them whenever they ask but return them to my purse when we go on rides and stuff.

When my dd15 and dd13 were younger from about 6-12yo they wore fanny packs i did find some that were bei enough for autograph book, pen, and gummies or slim jim and their $$. The last couple of years they have been bringing those light weight back sacks. They fold up nicely don't take up much room. They held on to their the whole time except when the went on certain rides I would let them put under the stroller. They don't do auto graph books anymore so now its usually a lightweight jacket, cell phone, ipod, snack. One year my son left his back pack on Buzz ride so we had to go back and get it the cms were great about it!!!

My son carried his own bag from about 7. It was a messanger type bag, from Disney and its just big enough to fit the Autograph book and the pen sticking out the top. He also now carries his camera and sometimes his money. I have never carried the bag, I have always made it quite clear that if you take it, you carry it :rotfl: so some days he would leave it behind. But when it was only the autograph book and pen the bag was very light so he was happy to carry it around.

When we went to Disneyland Paris he had forgotten his WDW bag and wasn't going to do autographs that trip :sad1:, he was too old. Well that changed once we got there so we ended up getting a DLP small messanger bag and he again carried his autograph book, pen and camera.

My DD (11) carried her own backpack on our last WDW trip. In it, she had a sweatshirt, water bottle, a few juice boxes, some snacks and her camera. I agree with a PP who said that if they take it, they carry it. :)

If you decide to let your kids carry their own stuff, keep an eye out. My 9yr old niece lost her fanny pack last year. She thinks she took it off one time when she sat down. Some nice person did turn it in to lost and found, so we got it back:banana:, but she was pretty upset about losing it.

The really scary thing was she had wanted to carry her own park pass around, and her mom told her no. Which was apparently a smart choice!

Yep this has been my rule also from about 5 on. It is funny sometimes when you remind them how much stuff goes back onto the bed or table as you are leaving for the day. Also works for buying stuff and I want them to wit till the end of the day and they don't, suddenly it does sound like a good idea.

I did carry my 5 yr olds jacket one trip because I wanted him to take it but he didn't want to carry it and said I'll be cold instead. So I carried it because he really would have been cold and not said a word if it meant he had to carry it something he decided he just wasn't going to do. (I know I have left him be cold other times) but felt we would be out too long so I caved.
