Kids on rides question

My DD5 wants to go on "all the big rides" this year, but she wants to sit right with us (ie Matterhorn Bobsleds, where they can sit right in your lap). I can't remember how most of the other rides are set up because she hasn't ridden them so it hasn't come up. Will she be able to sit where we can hold/touch her on the biggies? Space, Splash, BTMRR, GRR?

It's been a while since I've been on a lot of them because now that I'm "MOM" I usually back with a little one, lol.

If my memory serves me right (someone please correct me if I'm wrong):

Splash is a log type of ride so I think it is set up where she will pretty much be in your lap.

BTMRR as I remember it was a ride where 2 people would sit side by side.

I can't recall Space......

And my mind is failing, I can't think of what ride GRR is, lol. What does that stand for?

Space has 2 individual seats with lap bars side by side.

BTMRR has a bench seat with a long lapbar that goes over 2-3 people.

Splash has 5 individual seats right behind each other (no lap seating) and then one seat in the back that can seat one adult and one child side by side. That's were I would recommend sitting with her the first time (you can request it).

GRR is 8 seats in a circle, with individual seat belts. So you can hold on to her.

on space, you sit 2 people, side by side, but in bucket seats, each with their own individual lap bar.

i still hold onto my daughter on space, i just can't remember exactly how, lol. i always feel like she could fall out of the ride, though (i don't think she really could, she's just really tiny for an 8 year old, and it always seems like she could fall out), so i do hold onto her during the entire ride.

i liked splash MUCH better when you could lap sit with a kid in front of you and hold on. it felt more secure, IMO. but now, my husband and i each sit one of our little ones in front of us, and then reach around the back of the seat and hold onto them while we go down the drops.

Most definitely.

It's awkward getting in and out of that back seat, so try not to carry much with you.

Otherwise you'll sit in back of her, but there is a narrow backrest between each person in the rest of the log. Not as cozy as on Matterhorn.

A bad thing about the Matterhorn is that the ride is very bumpy and jerky, not as smooth as most of the other rides listed. It may be hard for you to hold on to your daughter while the ride is in motion because you'll probably want to hold on to the handles for yourself. I went on with a scared 6 year old, but gave up on holding him because I was sliding around everywhere!

Which side were you on? I won't go on the TL side anymore because of how jerky it is. I took DD2 on the FL side because it's much smoother IMO. I held onto her with no problem on that side. Just thought I would mention it!

Instead of using "left" or "right" side (because it changes depending on how you are facing), most people use TL (Tomorrowland) and FL (Fantasyland) sides to distinguish between the tracks.

To further clarify on what DLR posted, the FL side is the side that is to the "right" facing the entrance, the TL side is to the left. Or to make it even easier, the FL side exits near FL, near the Alice and Teacups rides to be exact. The TL side exits closest to the lagoon/Nemo ride in TL.

Sorry for the confusion! It sounds like you were on the Tomorrowland side, which IMO is much jerkier and bumpier than the Fantasyland side (especially sitting in the back). The last time I rode the TL side, my back really hurt. The FL side is much smoother and I have no problem with it. If you are facing the queue as you are about to enter the line, the left side is TL and the right is FL.

FYI, many CMs, unless they are absolutely filling the log, will simply let a child sit in front of adults, but not in the official front seat. That way there isn't the ducking down and injuring yourself issue, but they still get to be in front.

Not just kids, by the way. The front seat rider has to be 60", which is kinda scary...I mean, I'm only 63" (5'3") and there are plenty of adults shorter than me.

The FL side might be smoother but it's still not very smooth, imo. DH and I stopped riding the Matterhorn because it always gives us a headache but every 5-6 years we try it out again and then we get off and say "oh yeah, that's why we don't go on it.". In the past we just got on whichever side because we didn't realize they were different but after hearing the FL side was supposed to be less jerky we decided to try it out when we were there in July. We didn't find it to be smooth at all and we once again were reminded of why we don't ride it anymore. Since we thought the FL side was plenty jerky, we didn't try the TL side to compare but I think it will be another 5 years or so before we go on it again. I just wanted to warn you so you didn't think it was really smooth.

On GRR we had DS sit in the seat between each of us, rather than in the seats on the edges near the steps (if that makes sense ) and he felt safer that way. Also, the seat belts are VERY loose and the CMs always made sure to tell us that they wouldn't really tighten but that it was ok. I would either put my arm across ds or I would have him hold the black circle thingy in the middle.

OH one other thing about GRR - ds LOVED this ride and we rode it 7 times all during the day - the time we rode it at night it was VERY scary for him and he was so worried he kept saying he wanted to get off and go back to the hotel! So definitely take into consideration the time of day you are going on the ride if you have a sensitive child like mine!

She's done the Matterhorn before. My husband manages to hold her somehow, but I have no idea how because I'm holding on for dear life! It'll definitely be him holding her on any ride she decides to follow through on riding.

When we ride we go 2 by 2 so we only take a single bobsled. The girls ride together with DD13 in first and DD9 sitting between her legs, they both hold onto the handles. DBF and I ride together, he gets in first and I sit between his legs. I'm able to put our bags under my legs and put my feet in the front of the car, I hold onto the handles and he just wraps his arms around me.

The FL is definitely smoother, but it's still jerky. It's not Screamin' where you can hardly feel any jerks, but I still like Matterhorn over Screamin', for some reason Screamin' makes me feel sicker than Matterhorn. Probably because Screamin' is so much faster.
