Kids movies not to watch with kids

Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie, I don't think I will let my kids watch it yet it has it scary moments

Pan's Labrynth was NOT marketed as a children's movie. It was a rated R flick and was promoted as such.

As to other films listed in the thread...I agree...it all depends on the kid. As for my girls, 6 and 8 respectively, love those dark children's movies. Coraline, The Dark Crystal, Labrynth, even the new Christmas Carol...they loved them all!

Of course they also are both RABID Dr Who fans so that should tell you about my kids! :thumbsup2

Thank goodness!

I had not seen it out in the theaters. My DH saw it on line and purchased it because it had a "cool" cover photo. :rotfl2: Men.

I couldn't understand how the OP thought it was in the same league as Coraline.

Matilda
My 18 yo DD did see it when she was younger but recently saw it again and thought it was a cruel movie for little kids. :rotfl:

Alright ..so what happens in Coraline? I haven't seen it yet!

I'm glad you enjoyed it, but why would you make a blanket statement like that? I think it totally depends on the kid. :confused3

My son saw "Coraline" at age 5 and LOVED it. We bought it on DVD and he's watched it over and over and over. We also read the book to him which he loved so much we bought him the audio book. He loves stuff that's a little creepy and dark. For him, it was a huge hit.

I think you just have to know your child.

Absolutely! This is my DD9's favorite movie. :thumbsup2

No it is a very dark and disturbing film! I would call it an "adult" fairy tale. That isn't to say it isn't a great movie...it is! Visually stunning and direction and cinematography is brilliant. But it is very violent...depressing and frightening.

I love do love it though...what does that say about me?? :scared1:

I really agree about the "depends on the kid" part. My husband took our son to see Jurassic Park in the theatre when he was 4 (long time ago) and he absolutely loved it.

Just watched Coraline. How awesome. Do not watch it with a child under 12. This is marketed as a kids movie, but far from it.
The last movie in this genre that I enjoyed as much was Pan's Labyrinth.

Any other suggestions?popcorn::
:sad2:
What a silly statement to make. We took our girls to see this in 3d at the movies, they loved it...but they have also seen all the Pirate's movies as well as Harry Potter.

Where the Red Fern grows shouldnt be seen by kids under 5, for the same reason as "Old Yeller".

I took my kids to see Coraline in 3D. They loved it! We also saw others on the list mentioned here. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter (all of them), Pirates of the Carribean, Old Yeller, etc. And I'll admit it, I let them see movies that are rated above their age group. I took them to see The Lovely Bones. My youngest is almost 10. She had a lot of questions after the movie, and although we had discussed the dangers of talking to strangers and being careful, it was a very good conversation about how to handle acquaintances.

So do I get the award for Bad Mommy of the Year 2010 or what? :rotfl:

My DD(9) is exactly the same - she loves Coraline, Corpse Bride, Nightmare before Christmas, Harry Potter, Spiderwick Cronicles and many others like this. She also is Dr Who's niumber one fan!

I remember that I was scared to DEATH of alice in wonderland when I was little (the old disney version). The new one looks even more scary!! Just based on the comercials. My brother was really scared of Cruela De vil in the not animated 101 dalmations. We were at the movie theater and her cried!! I think he was scared of all the makeup on her face...

Excellent!

If you want to watch something funny, my teen step daughter video taped my young daughters playing Dr Who a while back and it's on youtube.

If you look up the screen name myfavoriteninja on youtube you can find it!

My brother will not take his sons who are 4-5 to see "Transformers" due to the violence of the movie.

That's probably a good thing - "Transformers" definitely isn't a kid's movie. It's was rated PG-13 and kids were not the target audience. I do think it's fine for older kids, but most 4 or 5 year olds are probably not ready for a movie like that.

Pan's Labyrinth was marketed as a kid's movie?? Holy Cow, what were they thinking??

As another poster mentioned, it was not marketed as a kid's movie. I would have thought that the R rating would have been enough to convince parents not to take their kids to it, but just after it came out I heard tons of parents complaining that their kids were so upset after seeing the movie. Apparently the fact that it's sort of a fantasy and has lots of interesting creatures in it made some parents think it was a kid's movie. Sort of like all the parents who took their little kids to the South Park movie because it was a cartoon and therefor must be a kid's movie and then were furious that it was so offensive. Parents need to do a little research before they take their kids to a movie, and not just assume it's okay because it "looks like" a movie for children. They at least need to check the rating!

As for "Coraline" - I definitely think that varies from child to child. Some kids are fine with movies like that (such as "Corpse Bride", "Nightmare Before Christmas" and the like) and others would be upset by those movies.
