Kids missing school

My family has always wanted to go to WDW, but quite honestly, up until recently we were looking at saving for 5 years to be able to go - we'd start saving and something always came up (needed a new car, Mom needed help, family members passed away, etc.) My career is on track now, so a trip is possible, but we still are saving for almost two years for this trip. No credit card interest rates for me!

I agonized about the decision of whether or not to take the kids out of school. I have three kids, currently DS is in 9th grade, 2nd DS is in 7th grade and DD is in 6th grade. Neither my DH nor I handle the heat of a summer vacation very well, in fact, heat makes me ill.

You know what I decided? It's 10 days out of one year of their lives - we're taking the kids out of school. I want us to be able to thoroughly enjoy this long-awaited trip with smaller crowds and cooler weather. We'll take the trip when the school has one of their numerous two-day In Service breaks to lesson the impact and plan ahead as well as we are able for the missed school time. We've only taken the kids out of school once before for vacation (and we went to DL, lol!)

So I'll put on my flame-retardant undies if anyone out there wants to blast me, but I know we are making the best decision for our family. Do what's best for yours.

You have to do what is right for your family. I'll be taking mine out for 5 days for our trip. My dd's teacher has known about our trip since before we knew for sure she was going to be her teacher next year. She has no problem with it and will probably have dd do a journal instead of doing make up work. My ds will be in middle school, that may be a different story since I'm going to be dealing with several different teachers but I'm not going to ask permission, I'm going to tell them at the beginning of the year that he's going to be gone. Both of my kids are good students and I've never taken them out for a vacation before and more than likely won't again. There are reasons we're going at the time we are and I'll be happy to list the reasons for the teachers if they want them but I won't be changing our dates. I did make sure that they we're gong at a time when they won't be missing any of the standardized tests they're required to take under NCLB. Someone missing those tests can really be a problem for the school.

As a teacher and as a Disney fan, I say go for it! The work can always be made up.

I live in Wisconsin, and it is an excused absence to be gone for deer hunting and for county fairs. If they wanted to make a stink about it here, I would just refer to that.

I don't have kids yet, but I wouldn't hesitate.

Just please inform the teacher more than a week ahead of time out of courtesy.
