How old were your kids when you started leaving them home alone?

I've left my older dd home alone for short periods starting when she turned 12.

Before I started I called the local police dept to get the legal age and they couldnt answer me!
I work 1.5miles down the street - take my lunch hr midday when he's home to get his lunch
and no it certainly isnt every day

I think we started leaving my oldest home alone for short peroids of time when he was 12. Now at 14, he watches his younger brother ( DS10) for us.

Around 11 or 12 for very short periods of time. Like running to the store for a couple of minutes.

I believe leaving kids home alone for hours on end will lead to nothing but trouble. Boredom and preteens/teens are a scary combination.

My sons girlfriend who is 21, has a babysitting job this summer. The kids she's watching are 12 and 15!! All she has to do is show up and lay around the pool all day and drive them back and forth to the community pool and friends houses. Not bad for $200 a week. This is the age where they'd be getting in a ton of trouble if left alone for 9 hours a day, no matter how "good" they are. You can't put a price tag on peace of mind.

10...but I work with in 1 mile and I'm always checking in.....

During the summer though I've hired a high school babysitter to keep an eye on things...my 12 year old isn't being babysat though... just the younger siblings...

<font color=navy>My ds-10, my dd-11, although I would take her to daycare more often than not.

I try to find activities for them so they aren't at home during the summer months for days on end ... visit my dad, visit their dad, summer school, summer camp ... They're 15 & 14 now.
