My DDs (8 and 6) do the same thing. Ironically I will send them both to their rooms and within 5 minutes they are sneaking into each other's rooms to hangout together. ...I just don't get it.
My 31 DS and my 12 DD get into a tiff every holiday. The thing that makes it really fun is that my younger(36) DB feels the need to jump into the fray. It usuallly stems from the 31 yo trying to "parent" the 12 yo. UGH.
He always says that his children will not misbehave. I'm waiting.. There's not even a marriage glimmer in his eye.
At our house, it's DD (9) and DS (11). One time, I was so frustrated by their fighting that I told them to go ahead and beat up each other and to let me know when to call 911. You should have seen the look on their faces. They looked at me like I was an alien, looked at each other in shock and the arguing stopped immediately.
The best way I found to get them to knock it off is to send each one to their room. No one is to come out until they've calmed down, I decide when their behavior is acceptable They do try to sneak into each other's rooms. If the arguing and bickering starts again, then it's back to their rooms. It actually works.
