Where do you buy your children's glasses?

We have an Americas best store here... Two pairs and eye exam for $100... They are not the best designer frames.. You do have to select from certain ones but for extra you could pick anything you want.....that way if one pair gets broken we have a spare...

My son(6) has had glasses since he was 1 yr old. He has a very strong prescription. I always get the anti glare and transitions. They run typically $120-$200 which is cheap. I use walmart and Bjs the most. Walmart has a fantastic breakage program. They will fix and or replace for a full year.

I get our son Transitions and I buy them at Walmart. I take his prescription there, and for frames and transition lens it comes to around $100, the second pair I get is just an extra pair so no transitions and those run around $55 or so.
They have a decent choice of frames rather cheap.

We get them at the shop at her opthamologist's office. They have a one year warranty on each the frames and the lenses, and they will give you new ones if the lenses scratch (which with a kid they always do), the frames bend or have any issues etc. Also, DD has a ski slope nose, so we are always having issues with having to have her glasses adjusted to keep them from slipping down her face etc., especially after she has had them a while and they have stretched out a bit, and those are all free. You definitely want to keep an eye out for that because if they look over their glasses instead of through them, it can cause issues. DD wound up having to patch for 2 months when she was in first grade because her glasses had been sliding down at school as she bent over her desk, and we didn't know about it. Turned out her teacher had noticed her looking over her glasses a lot, but didn't realize it was a problem she should tell us about.

We know several people who have used the cheap places and it turned out the prescription in the lense was not accurate, so if you do use the cheaper place, I would suggest seeing of your opthamologist's office can check the prescription and verify it.

We always do the anti-glare now. We didn't the first time around, and DD would complain about seeing rainbows a lot. The anti-glare made a big difference for her- she said she could see so much better out of them. It also looks a lot better in photos. We have done the transitions, but DD didn't like them because she says they do not turn back to normal fast enough when you go inside and she can't see when she is first inside.

My son has had glasses since 3rd grade. he is 15 now. We go to a place called Opticare Vision Center. They aren't the cheapest, but the doctors stay the same and they have great customer service. They also have a one year replacement warranty on their glasses. A couple years ago my son had his glasses knocked off his face in gym class and the frame cracked. They replaced them at no extra cost to me.

My sister goes to walmart and doesn't understand why anyone would pay more to go to the places like we go. I just feel that the staff is more consistent and the care is very good.

We got my DS his glasses two years ago at JCP. They were having a back to school sale for $25.

They have the deal this year again, but now its $29.99. Kids glasses age 16 and under. Frames up to $120, free impact and scratch resistant polycarb lenses, free uv protection and free protection plan.

When we went they let DS choose from kids or adult frames.

We get my son's at Visionworks (used to be Eyemasters). They usually have a 2-for deal going on, pricing varies. The most recent pair we got, we got the main pair with anti-glare, but not the back-up pair. I buy the warranty on the main pair. We have always gotten good service there. A few months ago, his back-up pair broke and I had forgotten his main pair had also broken. We went in and came out less than an hour later with new glasses.

Zenni Optical.

the last pair cost $28 for a pair with clip on sunglasses - shipped.

We use Wal-Mart optical. Both my boys are in glasses, and DS8 is VERY hard on them. Wal-mart's 1-year guarantee is pretty comprehensive, and covered 4 rubber ear piece replacements (he chews on them), two broken lenses (stepped on them), and a snapped-off ear piece (he was "just playing with it") last year. I'm sure other places have guarantees as well, but it's convenient for me to just drop off the glasses on my way to or from work and pick them up that day (except for the lens, that took a few days).

I just bought four pairs of glasses for my kids and I think it cost me $350 total. We bought the most expensive kids frames they had (because they looked the most durable to me) at $69 each, and got upgraded lenses on the pairs they'll keep at school.

My sister got her 8 year old glasses at BJ's certain styles were BOGO, she got 2 pairs for $69.

Good to know. I always get the anti-glare and transitions and it costs about $300 for the lenses alone!

wow- I can't believe how cheap some of your glasses are- we go to a local place but pay over 400.00 for a pair or glasses. I do let her get designer frames though, she is a girl and likes to be stylish. She has had the same frames for 4 years now though, we just replace the lens, she usually wears contacts so the glasses last.

I wear lenses during the day, so I only need glasses for the night. I order from Zenni optical online. It's a bit hard to predict if you are going to like the style, but I am not going out in them, anyway. They are very inexpensive, and have all the measurements online. Both of mine fit just fine on me (the first pair has grown on me, too - now I really like them).

That's where we got DS's back up pair last year. Although not the most helpful, you can't beat the price.

We also use America's Best. They advertise two for $69.99 including the exam. But you can select more expensive frames for additional. I let my son pick out one pair as his main glasses and they can be whatever he wants....and the second pair as a back up from the cheaper frames. Last trip cost us $108 with tax.

I wear contacts which require a yearly exam, so I joined their eye club. $99 and it includes 3 years of exams, up to every 6 months if needed. I prefer the air optix, which they don't carry...but I get my script and order them online.

No complaints about them and we have seen the same doctor the last 2 years we've been going to there.

regards

We use Walmart-- just got DS's today. We have vision insurance that covers up to $140 for frames (I always have a hard time finding frames that expensive at Walmart) and basic lenses. We pay $24 to upgrade to the scratch resistant lenses. We found Walmart after went to Lens Crafters, and the glasses were going to be around $200 WITH our insurance there. NO way. Our Walmart says their guarantee does not cover scratches on the lenses, though. That's OK, I could buy 7 lenses a year and still not equal the cost of Lens Crafters.

Thank you all for the suggestions! We were able to go to jcpenny(which I never would have thought of!) glasses plus exam $68! Thank you so much for letting me know about that back to school deal. And they are cute glasses too!

The Walmart near us has a terrible eye care center, I got my last set of contacts there and it was a disaster. Just a function of the bad Doctor not the brand in general. And sadly the closest Americas Best is an hour away and got low reviews. But dang they offer 2 pairs plus an exam for the price I paid.

We use Pearle Vision. While we now have some (limited) coverage for glasses, when DD first needed them we didn't. Pearle had a program for kids that helped to limit the expense -- maybe 50% off? Or free lenses with frames purchase? Something like that. LensCrafters had a similar program, but I like the service at our Pearle Vision better. The people seem more knowledgeable about fitting and such; our whole family uses them now.

Good luck!

Please beware of America's Best. I went last year and got glasses for myself. I brought them home and tried to use them and couldn't see very well with them. I took them back and the eye dr insisted that they were correct and sent me on my way.

Last week, I went to have my eyes checked and went someplace else. After the exam, I asked the dr to check to glasses that I had been given last year (and still cannot read with). The dr said that the prescription is "much" stronger than I needed and didn't understand how I could see with them. I told him, I couldn't. That I had been using over the counter readers for the last year.

Thankfully, this year I have vision insurance, which I didn't have last year. :worried:
