You all are sooo talented!! i have called my mom (who used to sew professionally), to teach me how to sew...I have to learn this!! Awesome jobs everyone!!

Kenmore and Janome are the same? I have a basic Janome and just love it. I guess it's 4 or 5 years old. My Singer bit the dust and the Janome was in my price range. I don't normally do much more then straight stitch and zig zag. But now that everyone here has got me wanting to do more creative sewing, I'm thinking of getting one with some other stitches.
I was a Buyers Assistant at Sears Corporate when I lived in the Chicago Area...Although I worked on the Televison Buying Team. Kenmore is Sears Store Brand and they have their "Stuff" made by other companies usually VERY GOOD NAMES..My Boss (the Buyer) came to TVs from the buying team of Vacuums and Sewing Machines and YES, at the time my Serger was purchased Janome was the manufacturer.....LOL I am not sure who manufactures what items for the Kenmore brand now but I have been out of the Sears Loop for almost 10 years now...My my how time flys...:rolleyes1 Nana

Thank you Nana: I just sent the link to the WalMart machine to my husband in case he needed an idea for Christmas (wink, wink).

I have a thirteen year old Kenmore that I just love. My mother had a very old Singer (she said back when Singers were good) and now has a fancy machine that does embroidery. I think I have talked her into getting a serger now though, thanks to this thread!

I bought adorable matching overalls for my kids for our trip last May. We are going again in Jan/Feb and my ds has outgrown his. Dd still has tons of growing room in hers. Sooooo, should I sell them and have the same person make me more? Should I attempt to find all the same stuff and make them myself? Should I try and cut all the pieces off his old overalls and applique them on to new overalls? I've never done overalls and when I bought these had not started sewing. I just hate to spend a ton of $$ on new ones when I know I could make them for far less. I just don't know if I could recreate them exactly unless I take all the pieces off the old ones. But, then I'm not sure that cutting them off and putting them on a new pair of overalls will work either.

Could you post a picture so we can see the sets? If we know what you're talking about, maybe someone will have some ideas for you.

It would depend on what shape the overalls are in as to whether I would pilfer from one pair to another and whether the old stuff would work on a pair that is larger.

I have a pair of Nana's overalls (we so love them! and they held up fantastic on my destructo-monster) and DD's just outgrown them, it breaks my heart. She loves those overalls to death, she's finally gotten to the point where they are too short in the crotch to wear anymore. I know since we've washed them so many times that even though they look pristine, I would venture to say the bib would never look the same on another pair.

You might sell them and have the same lady make you another pair. I've considered that myself. I will wait until after Nana has healed because I'm not going to sanction her misbehaving and sewing before she's supposed to (and I hope she knows I'm just teasing her  and that I understand what she's going through. I fractured my arm while 8 months preggers and well, I probably used my arm more than I should have...)

Otherwise, get one of the many patterns you can get online for embellishing overalls, it's not that bad. I made a pair and am currently plotting three pairs right now. (I SOOOOOO need to get moving on the customs for the trip the end of the month....) I have to say that it's a lot of fun but I do find parts of it more challenging than sewing from pattern to finished garment. My machine isn't always fond of the top part of overalls and I get that characteristic Brother machine knocking. :rolleyes1

I don't use fusible because I worried it will make the jeans too stiff. I know some people do use it and think it works well without adding too much stiffness, though. Another option is a temporary fabric adhesive that will wash out. Some people use a spray they get at JoAnns - I think it's K2000 or something like that. I actually don't use any of those methods nor do I pin any more... I stuck myself enough to give up on THAT. Now I just have my patches stacked and grab one at a time to stitch on. I usually stack them in the approximate order I want to apply them but I may sometimes skip one or two if it will put 2 patches of the same print next to each other. My patches are roughly the same size and shape so stacking just works easier for me. I'll probably try the spray adhesive, though, when I do more varied shapes and sizes and want to get the total layout determined before I start sewing.

Thanks! I am going to try right now..wish me luck!

That is so great that your son was chosen. All my kids would love this but if 1 got chosen and not the others we'd be in for a world of hurt.
How was the smoke there? My MIL just got back from visiting family in OC and said it was pretty bad. Hope it didn't affect your trip. Can't wait to see more pics.

The smoke was not bad at all really. The day we left home (Utah) the winds had started blowing the smoke our way from California and I would have to say it was about the same there as it was here at home. It was slightly worse in Legoland which is farther south and it smelled like campfire a bit. Overall the weather was amazing.

Thanks, Wendy, I just might take you up on that offer!!
Okay, in my Pre-Serger Days I would use either a small zig-zag stitch or if your sewing machine has one, a stretch stitch, you can look in your manual to see if you have one. You want the stitches to have a little give to them. BUT Request a Serger from Santa!!!! Walmart.com has a really nice Brother Serger for only $239.00 you will NOT regret that purchase! While I was down in Florida I convinced AliKat99 to get one for X-mas!! We both worked on Chris (DH) and he said "OK" :dance3: :lmao: :lmao: We double teamed him:lmao: Nana Of Course, I'm sure it didn't hurt to have my sewing arm in a sling with a broken arm and a big ol' black eye with the cut from my glasses obscuring my eyebrow....I looked REALLY pitiful...:lmao: :lmao: Nana

The Brother from Walmart is a really nice machine. I was looking over the features and it has the differential feed which helps keep the top and bottom fabric feeding into the machine at an equal rate. And many of the features I have on my Ten Year old Kenmore (Janome) has . And the nice thing about Walmart is if it doesn't work right just exchange it, no hassles! The price is really good to at only $239.00 They also have a Singer for $199 but the Brother is a much BETTER machine. I personally trust Brother machines I have the cs600i sewing machine and a PE150 Embroidery Machine and have just purchased a Brother PE700 Embroidery machine with the 5X7 field. AliKat99 is getting my PE150 when I go down to Florida for Thanksgiving. Nana

Thank you Nana! Glad to see you back at the computer! Now I really want that serger! I checked the website and it is even 97 cent shipping! Now I just have to talk DH into it!:santa:

On my very tall five year old I do 12 inch strips with a 4 inch ruffle (not counting seam allowances so subtract an inch) so I think somewhere between ten and twelve inch strips would be ok for a four year old.

I'm so glad you are back to posting. I hope the shoulder is healing and physical therapy won't be too painful. My mom has been shopping for sergers for herself already and have found that they are very expensive in the quilt shops. Do you think the Brother from Wal-Mart is ok?

I bought a Brother serger on Amazon.com for that price, free shipping and no tax. It is WONDERFUL, best thing I ever had. I don't know how I lived without it. It is so fast, and has never jammed. It took me a little while to figure out the threading, and once I conquered that, it is a snap....but it was a little annoying switching from a serge stitch to a finished linen type edge and back to serge...I am very impatient....but I do love that Brother serger.

Chris, the overalls are in excellent condition. He wore them in May while at Disney and has not worn them since. They are just too short in the crotch for him to wear again. I'm beating myself up for not going up a size!!!!

does anyone have any YCMT coupon codes?

TREAT1 for $1.00 off I think $10...not totally sure on that because I used TREAT5 for $5.00 off $30.00 the other night...went a little pattern crazy. It came in their newsletter, but I deleted after I used it, and I'm not sure how long its good for. HTH

Tell DH that you'll be able to do so much more in a shorter period of time. Strip work skirts are a breeze just cut/tear your strips and serge them together....Patchwork just as easy ....I have even stopped making a casing for the elastic for the waistbands on stuff because I have a way of serging the elastic on and then I just fold it over encasing the elastic and sew it down with the regular sewing machine ...faster method....all exposed seams are nicely finished in one step instead of taking 3 times as long to run your seam , run another seam 1/4" away, trim the seam to the second row of stitching, then zig zaging the cut edge.....Run your stitching line and then through the serger to finish it and voila done!! I can put together a pair of knit childrens PJs in less than 20 minutes using a serger. The CUTE "Lettuce" edges on knit shirts and leggings are a breeze to do with a serger. A few months ago I thought my serger had died and was all set to buy the Brother from Wally World and then found out I only needed a new control foot pedal...
LOL Nana BTW my Serger was a Christmas Present from my kids....(mostly AliKat99 really)

Nana, thanks for the advice - I dont quite see a surger from Santa this Christmas as I've only been sewing since like July, but maybe next?????? I guess I"ll have to "prove that I need one" !!! I have a special lever on my machine that says stretch - I actually need to turn that halfway, put my machine on a special stitch and make my stitch length 0 (I think) and it does a "serge" stitch....its about a 30 or more year old kennmore - i've been trying some embroidery lately and it did come with a satin stitch foot, which is very nice since i couldnt find a screw on clear one. Do you think I'd be able to do those special sleeves?????

thanks, wendy[/QUOTE]

Oh Wendy, ask for the serger anyway! I've actually only completed 8 total outfits and I'm asking :santa: for one anyway! I'm not looking for an expensive one but just the Brother one or the Singer one that Wal-mart carries will be fine by me! I've never actually sewn a knit fabric but the one thing I've heard from people who have is that even if you pin it, it will slip so they say to pin it very closely together and to pin it vertical to the seam so that it can't slip up and down the needle (basically the needle and the seam should form a T). Hope that makes sense!

Can anyone help?? I have been searching with little (I found one) success for the 6X8 spiral bound scrap/memory books that you can use to make autograph books. I have one but I need 3 more. Does anyone have any hints as to where I could buy these? I think I have seen some photos of some decorated on this thread. I think our local Michaels has discontinued the item. I used this type before and the work great for adding in photos. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you check in the art area - I found blank, heavy paper spiral bound notebooks with the painting supplies at Hobby Lobby. Most places only have lined journal pages. Hope that helps!

Megan had her very first soccer game yesterday. She didn't score any goals, but she sure was cute:

cute she looks like she is having fun.

Thanks for all the nice comments on the outfits.
I didn't use a pattern. I'm scared of patterns! I made the top half of the Minnie skirt 40 in. (double my girls waists) and the bottom half 80 in. All in Minnie dot. The under skirt is also 80 in. Plain white. I sewed the two bottoms together and then sewed that to the top. I added the ruffle on the white and rick rack around the top Minnie dot. Put in the elastic and viola! Done. Very easy. Hope that makes sense!
Thanks for the info:goodvibes i too was terribly afraid of patterns and then i started using them more and now i don't do to shabby i have done a pretty hard one and my oufit turned out beautiful... still i think your creative mind comes up with some pretty awesome stuff:cutie:

 i know utahmama is sleeping in today.:cloud9: (hopefully that is what she usually tries to do...) she has new daycare buddies so she is exhausted. i went to costco with her yesterday;)

I found this project that would look really cuite applicqued on something. The feathers are hands and the Turkeys body is feet. Too cuite. Very personal if we use are kids hands and feet. Or if you want a big Turkey we can use ours.lol.

that is a really cute idea and my kiddos would love to help with that thanks for the great idea..

Hi everyone, I'm back from Disneyland! We had a great trip and I will post photos later (still waiting on yours Misty!) I've loved all the outfits I've seen! It took me forever to catch up, but it was fun seeing all of your halloween costumes! I can't wait to see more Christmas stuff! I am glad I decided at the last minute to make DS5 Luke a Luke Skywalker (episode 4) costume. As you can see in the photos he was chosen (on our first attempt thank goodness) at the Jedi Training Academy. He thought he was pretty cool!

Here they are.

too cute, i can see why you don't want to let go off them .

Chris, the overalls are in excellent condition. He wore them in May while at Disney and has not worn them since. They are just too short in the crotch for him to wear again. I'm beating myself up for not going up a size!!!!

Since they are in such great condition, I would suggest trying to resell them and buying another set. They are adorable...hmmmm what size are they? They woud be pretty cute on DS2.

I don't use fusible because I worried it will make the jeans too stiff. I know some people do use it and think it works well without adding too much stiffness, though. I haven't had that problem but your idea (in a later post) of either doing 2 layers over the knees or trying heavier fabric for the patches would be what I'd suggest. Another option is to do the patches in a way that keeps the knees mostly plain.

Well, I think I see a trip to the quilt store in my future. :rolleyes1 I don't know where else to get good fabric. And, since I must try out this new theory, I'll have to make some jeans this week!! Thanks for the tips!

Plus, with all this darn talk abut sergers, I'm getting the itch to go look at those too!! Sigh. This place is dangerous.

It has been a while since I've posted, but I have been faithfully reading all along. My DD8 loved wearing her customs on our September trip. I took a short break from sewing and I'm not getting into making outfits for winter.

I've run into a situation with my sewing that I'm hoping you all will be able to help me with. I have made three pairs of jeans for my DD8. (Her body build makes it difficult to fit her into the slim-fitting, low-riding jeans that are in fashion today.) First of all, I had difficultly finding patterns with loose fitting pants. I ended up using a pattern for capris that worked really well this past summer--I added about 4 inches to the length and they turned out great. My problem is this--they appear too loose fitting in the front. With the capris I made this summer, the fabric was lighter and we didn't notice any loose puckering. However, with the heavier denim, there seems to be some ballooning/puckering at the front seam, down towards the hip area--almost as if they are too long in the stride, but they aren't. (I hope this makes sense.) Can anyone give me advice on how to adjust my pattern to prevent this? I really appreciate any suggestions.

TIA!

Love all the new outfits. Where O where O where is HeatherSue? She has been missing. :confused3

Teresajoy Thank you so very much for helping me by finding some Minnie dot fabric. :flower3:

Does anyone know how I add my ticker to my siggy? I couldn't even put my boo pumpkin it would not let me and i even had my hubby try. Any help would be great. TIA.

Have a nice night all. :grouphug:

I know Heather had an extra little one Friday night (my 9 year old daughter) then, whe had a little party to go to Saturday. I don't know what she's been up to today though!

You are welcome about the Minnie Dot! I just wish we could have gotten the deal that some on here did!! .50 a yard!!! I looked at a few stores today hoping to find some, but everyone is out.

Megan had her very first soccer game yesterday. She didn't score any goals, but she sure was cute

She looks adorable!!! Did she have fun?

Hey, everyone!!! Just thought I would check in and say Hi!
You know I REALLY miss not being able to sew and create !! I can't wait until the next 3 weeks is up so I can start my physical therapy to regain the use of my arm!!!! At least I won't have to have surgury to put the ball back together!! :dance3: Nana:cheer2: :cheer2:

Hi Nana!!! It's nice to see you posting again!

I have just found the board today. I love all the outfits. Couple of questions to who ever may answer. I saw some overalls for little girls( can't find again) does anyone know how they were done. Also to the one who took the shirt and added the skirt is there a pattern. Those look like something I could do before my trip. I have twins so two of everything. Any help is appreciated. I already made pillowcase dresses for the trip we do turtlenecks with them .

thanks
beth

Welcome Beth!!!!! Make sure you check out the sewing patterns bookmarks link (in my signature and in the first post) and the Photubucket page (link in first post)

How cool that he got chosen!!! He looks adorable!!!!

Hey I need some ideas from you guys. Next week DS has surgery and we will be at Scottish Rite at least 4 days. I need something to work on there to keep my mind off focusing on worring. I can't knit or antyhing like that. Any ideas? I was almost thinking about hand stitching a few appliques together and then attatching them to shirts or whatever after I got home. Would that even work?

I am so sorry about the surgery, I hope everything goes ok.
