Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes Part 4

I made these for dd2, but they are too small... oh well! Now what will I do with them...

And I finally found something to use my Cinderella pumpkin fabric for!

Love the leopard Santa print, I've got 2 1/2 yrds. of it and I'm not sure what to do with it though! All of our Hobby Lobby's are sold out of it right now and I got the last of it about a month ago at one of them. Is there anyway you could cut off the overalls at the bib and make a skirt for it? Maybe then you could use some of what you've got done. The Cinderella overalls are cute too!

Are you in the KC area? Did you go to Carolyn's? It was a madhouse - although I expected it to be that way!

When DH was comforting her, he asked her if she needed a helmet and she said yes! She is very clutzy, poor thing. Oh and the stuff on her forehead is glitter, or "sprinkles" as she calls it. She insisted on it this morning.)

And one more, just so DH and DS don't feel left out.

Whew! I'm exhausted. I don't want tomorrow to be Monday!

Love the outfit! She is so cute! I've got to get going and get more sewing done, seeing everyone's outfits is such an inspiration!

I used to say that my beloved Tomia was schnockered (part schnauzer part cocker) LOL! I really wanted to get a "mutt" again this time, but DH insisted on a pure bred schnauzer because that's what he had as a kid. I REALLY prefer mutts...it's a good thing she's so cute.

I was waiting for you to say you were a cat person! I just want everyone to know that you aren't strictly a cat person, you just had a fairly (okay, VERY) unlikeable dog! Unless you lied to me all those years, you loved Pepe and Tomia!

Aww... I never would have actually posted a picture of you in labor. It makes me so sad to think of all the pain you had to go through (her hospital didn't believe in epidurals and I don't recall if they gave her anything for pain at all). At least Corey was worth it!
That little Foster is such a pretty cat, and how nice of him to keep an eye on the fish! I'm still sorry for the near heart attack that Josie gave him (sort of... )


LOL! Yes, they do seem to be a little small. But, cute for someone else, perhaps? I love both outfits. Too cute!

And Teresa, no epidural? Are you kidding me? My bestfriend for 26 years is an Ob/Gyn in Bloomington, IL (anyone from that area that needs a recommendation, let me know!) and she says she wouldn't let anyone work on her teeth w/o pain killers so why would you let them not give you anything for childbirth. I had epidurals for both girls, although the first one wore off before I got to pushing (of course, she was 9lb1oz !) but at least I had it for several hours before that. I begged my doctor with my second induction to give the epidural before I started the pitocin or before she broke my water but it was no good, darn that hospital policy! I feel no need to feel any pain if at all possible! You're a brave girl for even going to a hospital with that policy!

Hi - im making similar patern - i was wondering if you remembered how long of a piece of fabric you used to make the twirly part of that top - im really unsure - and am making this for a 1 year old (and if it looks good a 4 and a 5 year old) and just dont want it to be too poofy, you know? your's is such a nice amount of fullness!!

Mary Poppins Outfit----Ms. Poppins was quite impressed!

Minnie Dot dress---This was the EASIEST thing to create...Took about 2 hours and $10 worth of fabric. Such an easy outfit to keep cool in! I can't find a picture of the front of the dress, though!

Hi Everyone,

Well, we had a summer style day here in the Philly area - we headed down the shore, and 14 yo DN and I actually were swimming in the ocean!! In October!!! Cant believe this crazy weather!!

I was wondering if anyone out there has made bib's for people with special needs that would need a larger size for drooling and such - a friend at work is asking me if I could make some for her 15 year old sister - any tips?

ok, so Josephine had a cute little dress made out of this pooh fabric from 2006 easter. well it did not fit anymore! So I re-worked it, tore the skirt apart and just made a stripwork jumper out of the panels! My hubby says it is boring looking. it is a little I think, but that is the color of the fabric! Anyways, it was nice to re-use the fabric into something now. this is dress length now and she will get to wear it for a little while longer.

But if you want to "dress it up" a bit more =
you could consider something like :

Do you have any more of that printed fabric?
IF so, you could put wonder-under on the back, cut out a few butterflies & applique them onto the solid color strips in the skirt ...
IF you don't feel like sewing them, you could use clear fabric paint to seal the edges down = works wonderfully & adds a tiny bit of shine ...

I read that you will be making a blue peasant top to go underneath the jumper/dress ...
well, to tie the two together = IF you have enough butterflies to applique =
you could put a few on the upper part of the peasant top = like on sleeves & around the neckline = for added flair.
+
there's the good ole stand-by : RICK-RACK would look great in this dress! Especially on the skirt's hem, on the shoulder straps, across the top of the bodice, and/or right above the gathered waistline, around the waist
And IF you do use rick-rack on this outfit = you could also make little 3-D butterflies out of the rick-rack & attach them, mixed in with the printed ones

Some pre-fab butterfly appliques might be cute, too = IF you don't have enough extra fabric left over to make some with ...

OR ~
you could cut contrasting letters out & applique words down the solid stripwork pieces ...
like "pooh" on the front 1 & "friends forever" on the back 2 ...

When I make this style top/dress I measure the bottom of the bodice all the way around and make the bottom twice that width. HTH!

But if you want to "dress it up" a bit more =
you could consider something like :

OK - hopefully I can explain this. I'm really bad about just "winging it" then if it turns out well and I want to make another, sometimes I have a hard time remembering exactly what I did. I probably should start writing things down, LOL!

So, I had a pattern for the bodice (McCall's Easy stitch n save M5370) that I sewed first. Then I measured around that and doubled it + an inch for seam allowance for the width. For the length, I just put the bodice on my daughter, then measured from the bottom of the bodice to where I thought I wanted it to end, then subtracted 2 inches for a ruffle. So for example, the twirl part of my DD's top is 12 inches from the bottom of the bodice to the bottom of the ruffle. But you could make it as long as you like.

I hope that made sense. Feel free to ask any more questions!

I made a Mickey quilt for the plane, a weighted Mickey vest for DS, T-Shirts, & custom beach buckets for our last trip to Disneyland, CA-nothing compared to the beauties that have been created here!

I do custom overalls, pjs & Tees for my little Princes (along with lots of other sewing projects). Curious how others work with appliques on the bibs of overalls? Do you tend to buy without pockets, rip out the pockets, or sew fabric over the pockets? I've done all of the above!!

I will add my "WOW" about the blinged Mickey Ears! I can't even imagine the patience to sew all those on. I think I'd have resorted to E6000 and bigger jewels.

Speaking of sharing, I finally tried one of the patterns from the Ottobre Design magazine I mentioned a couple weeks ago. I wanted to make a fall set for Zoe so decided I'd get both done in the process. It's not quite done (need buttons and button holes) and I'm not sure what top she'll wear with it but I think it's wearable. I already plan to tweak the design a bit the next time because the back flounces don't flounce enough. Also the front is pretty plain but I didn't want to get too fancy until I decided if I liked the style on her or not.

Very Impressed as always! Is this one of those patterns where you have to trace it out first? I've seen some of those Farbenmix patterns and they say there is no seam allowance in the patterns and that you have to trace it first. How does that work?

also for those who asked..it took about 2 weeks after work when i had time...so about 20 hours..i didnt time it & the strands cost about .50 an inch(on sale)

So it sounds like it took forever but I'm so impressed! I'd probably smear my ears in glue and roll in glitter! You ought to make and sell them, they are really too cute!

I have no idea how you would go about making it a larger size but I taught a little girl a few years ago who had muscular dystrophy and she drooled. Normally she just wore a bandana to catch the drool and so we could wipe her easily, but thinking about her, I would probably try to cover the top part of the bib (where the center pocket is) with chenille to absorb more. Also, I would maybe just attach the fabric at the top part of the bib and use velcro on the bottom and along the sides so that it could be lifted up to wipe but the velcro would hold it down so it would look nice. Maybe you could even velcro the whole top part on and make it interchangeable? Also, I'm not sure about whether the girl you are talking about can use the bathroom herself, but in my case, she couldn't. Overalls would be more difficult to change a girl in since they don't come with legs that snap so maybe you could cut the seams of the legs of the pants too and add snaps if she needs to be changed. Hope this helps!

THIS IS HOW I "PREP" OVERALLS for APPLIQUE WORK :
IF I am using o'alls that have a bib pocket, I usually remove it completely.
But this (usually) leaves those nasty stitch-lines & darker areas where the pocket WAS.
So, I either :
1. leave the bib blank & make sure the applique I'm applying covers all "offensive lines & dark areas" ...
but sometimes, that's not always possible.
In this case I will opt to :
2. remove the bib pocket & cover the entire bib with a contrasting background fabric, and apply my applique to the front of the bib on top of that fabric cover.
I seal the fabric down with lightweight wonder-under, + fold over edges & stitch them down.
Depending on the large bib applique, I stop the bib cover fabric at the waistband ~OR~ continue a bit farther down, closer to the front hip pockets

FRONT HIP POCKETS =
the thinner white pockets right under the waistband, by the hips ...
I steam-a-seam them down flat to the inside of the o'all.
Before I stared doing this, I had a couple of pockets fold up on me WHILE I was appliquing over them.
I didn't realize it until it was toooo late, and it was a nasty, lumpy mess =
that had to be ripped out & redone ...
I totally avoid THAT now
FIRST, I turn the o'alls inside out & press them flat (this also "pre-shrinks them a tad, you'll understand when you try it) ...
Then, I use "steam-a-seam" (1/2" wide, comes on a spool) the pocket flat to the inside of the overalls, & pretty much ignore them, after that.
This helps to keep them flat while you work over them from the outside.
Turns out really professional looking

BACK POCKETS = sort-of the same as bib pockets =
Remove the pocket & try to cover with appliques
OR ignore & leave them, as they are.

HAMMER / TOOL STRAPS =
I remove leg straps, IF they don't go with my applique theme.
You can cut them off at the seams they are attached at, but that leaves a bulky seam & back pocket edge ...
IF that does not bother you, leave it like that.
IF that bulky-ness bothers you, you can cut the stitching in those areas and remove the strap bit inside that seam & out from under the back pocket ...
Then, replace the stitching & "Orange" top stitching, as needed, to make it all blend back in & seal the side seam hole.

LEG POCKETS =
those neat little squared-of leg pockets ...
Sometimes, they require too much effort to dispose of, or the results of trying will not look great =
So, generally I ignore the& work around them.
But, IF the appliques can cover it = I remove that pocket & cover that spot.

TO WORK ON THE LEGS EASILY =
Don't forget that you can undo the INSEAM (that's the seam down the insides of the legs).
This way, you can easily work on the legs as flat panels. !
When you are done with your appliques, replace the inseam ...
Add ruffles before or after you do the inseam = you'll figure out which one's easier for you.

PRE-WASH = Don't forget to TRY to pre-wash your darker overalls,
BEFORE you do appliques.
SOMETIMES, later the denim's darker colors can BLEED BLUE into the appliques & ruffles, in the wash AND/OR even if you hand wash and HANG DRY.

That's about it, right?! Good Luck ... Hope that helps.

I've been waiting to hear what you thought about that magazine. Was the pattern easy to understand? I'm seriously thinking I may need to check this out.

I really like this issue and have subscribed to the magazine to get more. I wouldn't say these are easy but they are fairly simple styles. Someone who has done some sewing from patterns should be able to make these without too much problem. One thing that made it harder was that the sewing instructions don't have any illustrations of the steps. I'm not sure I did everything as the instructions wanted me to do but there wasn't anything too difficult to figure out even if it wasn't the "official" way.

You're going to make it even flouncier? WOW!!!

Not so much to add more flounces but the curve of the flounces is kind of flat in the middle so that part doesn't flare out like on the sides. Zoe's at an age where I won't be able to get her to wear the ruffled bum look much longer so I need to get as much out of this as I can while she'll still wear them.

Yes, that is the part of this that took me a bit of thinking to work out - that and the metric conversion is tough on an aging brain. I had the pieces traced and then remembered about adding the seam allowance so started over. What makes it more confusing is some pieces don't need seam allowance added and they do add hem allowance and facings, etc. I also had to keep in mind not to add the allowance to sides of the piece where it would be placed on a fold. Now that I've done one, I think it will be simpler when I decide to try a different pattern.

They definitely have some very cute boys clothes that I want to try in addition to the girls' clothes. I like that they have things for kids from infant to teen. The styles are fairly simple but they add great details and accents which is even better because then I can use the basic garment as a "canvas" and add as little or as much embellishment as I want.

On another board that I'm on, there is a header that shows different items from the famous site that are among the top viewed items. I'm reading along, and look up, and THERE IT IS! The really cute white halter dress with pink & green mickey heads & ric-rac! It's famous! And to think I knew it before it was ever worn!

I had a question about those little furry cuffs your daughter wore I think with a Halloween outfit. Do you think I could wrap a boa around elastic and make them that way?
